Playa Locomotive Tuesday

Post by firepoet » Fri Aug 26, 2005 4:27 pm

For those folks arriving on Tuesday, you may be blessed with the sight of an operating steam locomotive moving along the tracks faster then you can drive. The Union Pacific 3985 will be making an service stop in Gerlach around 2 PM on Tuesday, 8/30. It will pass Black Rock City about 15 minutes before that. This will be an amazing sight to see!

This is a rare opportunity to get a close-up view of the largest steam locomotive operating in the world today. UP 3985 is a Challenger-type locomotive, built in 1943 and used in heavy freight service across the Union Pacific system. Restored in the 1980's, the locomotive is currently a featured part of the Union Pacific's historic locomotive fleet. This will be the first trip by the 3985 to the west coast in 6 years.
