Looking for chess set pictures!

Post by timbofoo » Thu Sep 08, 2005 12:39 pm

Hello fellow burners! I hope everybody is making the adjustment to to the real world as well as possible.

A few of us built the giant chess set out on the playa ~ 1:10 and Catharsis......unfortunately nobody in our camp brought a tripod, or any photography skills --- so this is a shout out to anyone who might have taken some pictures of the set they want to share.

Please drop us a line chess (at) curple (dot) com or post a message here or whatever. Let us know if it is OK (or not) to put the pictures on our web page ( http://curple.com/chess ). Thanks so much!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the burn this year -- it was, as always, an amazing experience.

Giant Chess Set

Post by kilngod » Thu Sep 08, 2005 1:19 pm

I'm sorry to say I don't have any pics of your giant chess set, especially nite shots with the groovy blacklite ambiance.

I do want to thank you intensely for your piece, tho. My son and I (our first burn) rode out one nite, drawn by the non-light glow of the blacklite bulbs, wondering what in Pan's name is that, and arrive at this beautiful arrangement in a far corner of the Playa. We started playing, and by the time we agreed to resove the game with a handshake we saw that we had an audience of about 30 people or so, watching us as we had become the center of a performance. At one point, after my son had booted both my bishops, this chap dressed in full bishop regalia strolled by and I thought I had been redeemed, but alas he wasn't allowed to stay on the board as a piece.

It was one of my favorite moments during the week. Bless you. Thank you. If you do get any pics I'd love to one to my collection and scrapbook.

Mate in 5.

Peace.

That chessboard was great during the day and I wish I'd have seen it at night.
I took a picture of it thursday morning before the dust storm got too bad.
I was amazed at all the huge dead beetles laying all around the board, they were all about 3 inches long! Smushed on the ground! Bleh! Must've been atracted to the lights.

I have a couple now, and iwll be getting more as soon as i finish a roll of film.
But a little experience i had out there.

When I first came across your piece, there were 3-4 people standing around it looking at the pieces.. as i got closer i heard them arguing. They were arguing on whose turn it is next. Seems this group came across an unfinished game and they were actually figuring out who made what moves and in what order. It was blacks turn from what I heard. But there was definatly dissent from the rest of the group who thought it was whites turn. A very odd experience indeed.
