Very cool,

I had thought of doing the exact same thing for the last couple of years, but I don't think I would have had the real desire/courage to try it. I hope that Dicky documents his experience, oh heck I guess I'll just ask him myself towards the end of the week. Very Cool!

You say on the website "The Dicky Box" is somehow going to be documented on video.

I think Dicky should have a notepad, voice-activated recorder, camera(s), a sketchpad and a box of Prismacolors, and/or whatever Dicky normally might wish to use at Burning Man.

And I'd consider bailing on 24/7 video for a number of reasons --

A video crew, or even a stationary video setup, inserts an arguably invasive third party in between Dicky and other Burning Man participants. Many people don't like to photographed at the event, and it doesn't sound as if you're giving them an option. Do you want them to just walk by, or as a part of the project are you planning on recording the spectacle of visitors being pissed off that a camera's being shoved in their faces? If you're intent on creating something like the Survivor TV show or a Geraldo news piece, then go right ahead with the visible or hidden cameras, but AFAIK Burning Man has different conventions re: photography.

I'd assume you consider the project to be created just as much by visiting participants as by Dicky. Why not give Dicky minimal means of recording his experiences, and leave the rest to serendipity? Many people carry cameras around, and would likely be happy to forward you copies.

Dicky should be equipped similar to any other participant walking around the playa, the only difference being Dicky's physical isolation. I'd give Dicky some control over what is recorded from his experience, and not remove the direct interaction demanded of other participants to ask permission of others.

a dry chemical toilet will keep them safe and odorless. and there will be a small privacy curtain, for the rest of the community as much as for dicky.

I have a feeling this "parcel slot" will be accomodating more than just parcels. I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin', OK?

From the website
His only interaction with the outside world will be through a standard size parcel slot

Dicky Doodle Dandy! This will be one of my favorite installations, I'm sure. I really like the separation of individual consciousness from the collective. Anti Borg? I'm just sorry Alan Watts died before he could see this.

Very cool indeed, I'll definitely stop by. I'd have loads of questions but I think I will save them to ask in BRC. :)

I am so in love with this project.

I'd be curious about a psych profile of Dicky before the event and after, or if he plans to do any writing about the changes he experiences, as part of the experiment.

psych profile? hmmmm, yes, perhaps a ride on my shrink machine before and after.

this IS a very coo, eh hem, intriguing project. I thinks that dickey might perhaps be a bit overwhelmed with the amount of interaction. shoot, dickey might get more interaction than everybody out there.

moving dickey to an undisclosed spot everyday would be fun. like an easter egg hunt, only, a dickey hunt. and, we could emulate people in Thailand bringing food to Thai monks, people probably do that elswhere as well but, we could bring an offering of food and water for dickey only we would have to find him first. <I'm dizzy now>

I was just thinking he might just recieve a large ammount of gifting, earlier was thinking people were going to screw with him like pouring gas and teasing him with a lighter... or was that a Vietnamese monk?

Maybe BMIR can do "Where's Dicky?" updates....If Brad Templeton does his awesome panoramic photos again this year, I think we've got our "Waldo".....I'll want an "I Saw Dicky!" sticker, too. (Or perhaps change the figure in your graphic's pose to the Captain Morgan Position, with the caption, "There's a little Dicky in Me!".)

Okay, I'm done now.

I might plan to watch the burn with Dicky on "The Dicky Box -- Day VI".

Unless Dicky's a narc.

I can't believe I'm the first to say this, but: Good God!!!!!! What an incredible idea! And what an incredible person you must be to go through with something like this.

I love the whole concept of 'tourist trap bumper stickers' like "I saw Dicky"!

And there's going to be video? I think I smell the next "Supersize Me".... Oh, wait, that's my feet. Still think it could be a huge hit though. Once it's been finalized I've got a lead on a great theater for a screening!

I handed the concept over to my husband, a graphic designer. He says he'll make the stickers, and has several other ideas for slogans. My current favorite is "I stuck it in Dicky's slot".

Any other suggestions will be highly welcomed!
