Is there a single spot for rideshares to BRC in Reno?

Post by spyral » Thu Aug 18, 2005 1:25 pm

I'd like there to be one spot in Reno that anyone can go wait for a ride to or pick someone to bring to BRC. Has anyone discussed this?

For instance: The Greyhound bus stop, The Walgreens parking lot on S. Virginia just South of Hwy 80, The gasmart on Pyramid Way just North of Hwy 80...

Once we set a place we can set up a procedure of how to let drivers and rider spot each other

Look for a thread from last year started by hageymon. I think rideshare and reno were in the title. YOu can see obvious burners at gas stations, the airport, supermarkets, and the like.

The Albertsons grocery store in Sparks has been a spot for several years.
Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both right.

The Rideshare Board:

Black Rock International Burner Hostel:

from a 2004 Jackrabbit speaks newsletter:
The RENO-TO-PLAYA RIDESHARE PROJECT is DESPERATELY seeking SUPPORT!

Once again, the Black Rock International Burner Hostel will have HUNDREDS of Burners-in-Need waiting for transport to the Playa, many of them from other countries, utilizing the ever-popular Rideshare Project!

If you are coming through Sparks anytime between Thursday, August 26 and 3:00 pm on Tuesday, August 31st, PLEASE swing by here if you have room for a passenger!

Many of these people DO have a role that requires Early-Entry Status!

We're at 1350 Breaker Way, in Sparks.

Heading east on 80, through Sparks, past John Ascuaga's Nugget, take
the McCarran Blvd exit and turn LEFT at the base of the off-ramp.

Head north through a few lights until you hit Greenbrae Drive, then
take another LEFT.

A few blocks later is Breaker Way, and LEFT again.

All passengers will be ready to go, with no shopping stops needed! Not a single SOUL was left behind in 2002 or 2003...Let's see if we can pull it off AGAIN!

If you stop on West McCarran exit in Sparks (has 2-3 shopping malls, many gas stations and even a Wienershnitzel!), you are just a 1/2 mile away from this spot. It's very conveniently located, if you wish to consider it.

Hagey's Elegantly Simple, Surefire, One-Size-Fits-All, Backup
Rideshare-Quandary Solution:

There is an Albertsons grocery store located in a major shopping center at the corner of McCarran Blvd and Prater Way, in Sparks. It is the LAST STOP for supplies by MANY Burners on their way to BRC, and the FIRST STOP for many people coming BACK from BRC for the purpose of re-provisioning, conveniently off I-80 a very short distance and EZ to find. It is walking distance from my home and will be CRAWLING with Burners, as usual, year-after-year, starting around the 25th of this month, including many people from the Burner Hostel.

All you hafta do is take a taxi from the airport or bus station, carrying a PRETTY sign (NEED RIDE TO BRC), whilst you get your shopping done at Albertsons or any one of the numerous stores nearby, including a thrift shop and a Target, and, in no time, should be whisked away to BRC by someone you spot, or spots you, as clearly a BRC-Bound Burner.

Two pretty birds can be petted with one hand...

Everyone having extra room should just automatically swing by there, looking for Burners-in-Need, even if your shopping has already been completed. If you can't find anyone there needing a lift, and you're coming through town BEFORE, say, three-ish on Tuesday the 31st, swing by the Burner Hostel for riders (map/directions on my website).

Burners-in-Need are easy to spot!

SPREAD THE WORD, EVERYONE!

It may take a couple of years before this plan is widely known and practiced, but it WORKS!

Here's the latest "legal" scoop.

I've got new info about Reno Pick ups.

Concerns about bothering merchants are answered.

Here it is:

>
The Reno to Playa Ride Share Project rendezvous location is moving.

Hagemon has hosted the ride share project since its inception, but, for
better or worse, the resulting traffic has outgrown his residential
neighborhood. Hagey's hospitality and the convenience of his location
will be sorely missed. Hagey says if you have already made
arrangements with him they are still valid.

The new rendezvous location is being hosted by Twin City Surplus at
1675 East 4th Street in Reno. There will be some couches, a portable
toilet, shade, some trash bins and all the stuff Twin City offers including
water, but no close by grocery shopping. If you need to grocery shop
then do so first, then make your way to Twin City. You can repackage
for the playa there and use the trash bins to discard store packaging.

The ride share project asks for a donation of $5 for each carload of
riders/drivers who match up. The donations will be used to pay for the
toilets, trash service, miscellaneous associated expenses and, if
there's any left over, maybe better couches next year. Twin City will
accept the donations.

To get to Twin City Surplus1675 East 4th Street:

From I80 take the Wells Avenue Exit and go south one block to 6th
Street. Turn east on 6th and go about 6 blocks to where it joins 4th
Street.

Look left and see large water tanks belonging to Twin. Turn in there.
That is the rendezvous parking location. Please do not park in front
of the store entrance as you will interfere with normal store traffic.

Please don't ask Twin employees about the ride share project or
rider/driver status. They don't know anything about that; they just
provide the location.

If you're unfamiliar with the ride share project: It is an effort by
the Reno Burning Man Community to help Burners who arrive in Reno
without ground transportation get to the playa, and to give those who
are driving to the playa a chance to give a ride and meet interesting
people. If you're driving please consider stopping by to give somebody
a ride.
****************************

The ride share project is billed as a community effort. It needs a
couple of sofas which you can either pick back up after the event or
leave there to be dealt with (sold later) by Twin. Some art and/or
amenities will help visitors to know that the Reno Burning Man
Community cares about them. If you can contribute please contact me at

Dang, I am amazed at the ability of the community to step up to the plate. People, be nice to our hosts and don't ruin this, please. Thank you.
