mannequins wanted
I'm searching for full-body adult mannequins (mostly female, but a few male) for a project I'm trying to put together for Burning Man 2006. Damaged condition is okay: with or without heads, chipped surfaces, broken off hands/arms/feet acceptable.
I'm in the Los Angeles area but can also possibly arrange for pick up in the bay area (and points between there and LA), San Diego, Denver and Phoenix regions. Willing to pay a reasonable price, according to condition.
Please message me if you have any info/leads. Thanks!

Truly, they are a coveted commodity. Years and years ago I had the pleasure of riding an electric railroad maintainance vehicle down a stretch of track that eventually became part of the KalHaven Trail that runs between the Lake Michigan shore at South Haven and Kalamazoo- In a ditch along a wooded section of rail we came upon a boxcarload of old mannequins that had been dumped some time previously. One of the creepiest things I think I've ever seen.
On several sites, I've seen instructions for making dress dummies or el-cheapo spookhouse mannequins by throwing on old clothes and having a friend cover you in duct tape....Not sure what degree of detail you're looking for, but it does work for a rough shape and the price is right.

Is it possible to put pariscraft over one of those wickerwork ones? Those may (or may not) be a little more affordable.

I'm really looking for full-body ones--with legs and arms (arms are less importnant). I've not ever encountered wicker ones with limbs; in fact, I haven't seen any made of wicker recently. Lots of canvas, very popular it seems.
I have a friend in SF who already offered his garage as storage, Dustdevil, but I appreciate the offer.

I bought a mannequin from a guy on Craig's List and he had an extra set of legs he threw in for free..5, target practice?
One of my co-workers (who has an in with the guy who stores all the mannequins for the museum...) keeps asking me "what are you going to do with all those mannequins in the desert? Shoot them?"

i forgot, how many are you looking for ivy?
My bad, I totally forgot to answer. I'm looking for 12-15, the more the merrier, of course.
Put up a little site up about the project. It's still being tweaked. I was inspired to write a blog about all the stories that seem to crop up while collecting these mannequins. If anyone is interested, here's the link:

I was hoping if you can, diret me to find these places for mannequins. i didn't find much on craig's list. and if they are in really good shape that would be most helpful. i tried to email you but i'm not sure if its the right one. hope to hear from you soon!
thanks,
Rose

Hey Rose,
You can get new mannequins in good condition pretty inexpensively (~$125-150) from http://www.acmedirect.com; they have a warehouse in downtown LA where you can pick them up so as to save on shipping. I was also directed to the seller "fashionwindows" on ebay who is apparently located in Santa Ana and will also let you pick them up to save on shipping.
If you're willing to cruise the fashion district in downtown LA, there are quite a few stores selling fixtures and display props that also sell mannequins, that might be your best bet. I haven't been to any of them yet so I can't give you any reviews.
Hope that helps!

Thank you Ivy so much for your help. I'm heading to that Santa Ana warehouse this weekend. You are too cool. And if you ever want to visit our Alma Mater, i will give you a tour and some goodies of the campus. i'm in that tour group program. Thank you again,
sincerely,
Rose :)

Heh, I talked to them and they were referred by burners and didn't know the rules of eplaya. I'm going to take down their post or edit it. They apologized nicely and are happy to play by the rules now that they know.
Edit: Had to take down the entire post, couldn't remove the commercy sigline. mannequinmadness will be listing on craigslist rather than here.
