water trucks @ on the playa

what are the names of the water truck companies that water down the steets during the burn??
last year they sold me some water part way through the week,
i'd like to pre-arrange a water delivery....

anyone know there # or even the name of the company??

Actually there are several trucks that that carry potable water that are contracted by the BM project to re-stock cisterns at the various Ranger outposts, EMT shacks and other posts that are part of the BRC infrastructure. That they sold some of their water to Darren was pretty much a fluke but certainly not unheard of.

Darren, don't be surprised if you get a negative response from the vendor (whose name I'll not provide you with). The vendors KNOW that they are under contract and at the invitation of the event to supply water exclusively to the various areas specifically identified by the event staff. Further, they KNOW that selling you water - as they did last year - probably constitutes a breech of that contract. You might get water on the side as you did last year but I seriously doubt you'll be able to formally arrange for delivery.

The water that is sprinkled on the "city" streets comes from nearby ponds where the hot water springs are. There are two springs that have cold water and I've seen frogs swimming in it who freak when the big suction happens to load the truck. During the burn this area is closed off by the BLM but if you want to visit, you can beg a ride with a driver. A note on The hot springs near by. Some are too hot and will kill ya. There was a story years ago about a dog jumping in and died, a girl went after the dog and died. Never confirmed that story.

So, yep it's not drinking water, but the reason they are discouraging people from running behind trucks and taking a shower is they just don't want the headaches from having the county health department get involved. As I heard it.

Seconded from my own experience and I'll add that if you are able to buy water from the companies that have contracted with the Org you'll probably have to pay a high premium for them to break their contract. Every year I've gone they've been willing to, just about every year it's been very expensive.

My camp searches out small water truck companies, that the org has not hired, and brings them in before the event stars to fill our water needs. In years past we've shared said purchase with other camps so let me know if you want to get into the water truck pool this year...

Theres a company in in Winnemucca called Pacific Wildfire. They provide the government with all sorts of emergency gear. Potable water being one of them. Id try them.

Forgot to mention that The earth First people, do conduct a "nature tour" of the area. you have to sign up though. No touching the water though!

Also, the truck driver I hooked up with spends most of his year supplying water to fire fighting operations and is based in Winammucca also. Just be sure if you do hitch a ride, you check out / sign out so they let you back in! Lots of those guys are independent contractors. Bm is just another gig for them.

Jim, you may be right but I get a sense that you might be confusing the annual BLM Leave No Trace Camping Trip as something that EF puts on. To my knowledge they've never done anything like this in tha Black Rock. Certainly not as an organized, open event.

ok busted. earth guardians not earth first. Ya know that camp near esplanade every year usually to the right as you face the man at center camp. That one. Whom ever they are. They are there every year for the last 8 years that I can remember.

Did anyone catch the weird guy who took a bull horn several times a day to potties and broadcast his bowel movements? at first it was annoying but for performance art he did a good job but I really hated him till I got the point of his annoying loud crap.. ok there is another bad pun.. I better shut up. Most of his "performances were at 3 and a few other places I visited. Lots of people were just pissed he was hogging a pottie for a half hour at a time. darn there is another inuendo sorry. but it was weird. After a while it was funny. He did have fans who followed him from pottie bank to pottie bank. Then there where people who really wanted him to go away so they could use the pottie !

The dog died but the girl didn't. She was burned pretty bad

had left the flood gate open on the hot spring and the entire
pond was at maximum temp at the time.
Most of the locals would never set foot in that water and if
you drink it, you probably will get sick from parasites in the

Thanks for the reply. I only know of a gate on the regular temp pond. I thought it was the long narrow strip pond that you can just see the heat boiling off of ... Either way. I pass on the hot tub experience!

After being there, I also no longer run behind the water trucks either!

I met a guy at the 2008 Burn who'd been hopping from place to place in some hot springs. His leg plunged through some land he thought was solid, and wasn't. Hot water and mud was trapped in his sock and shoe, and while he could brush the mud off his shin (burning his hands a bit too), the mud was trapped by his sock and burned the crap out of him. The part that wasn't hidden by the bandage looked hideous; I can only imagine what the damage was underneath.

We happened to be Costco in Sparks yesterday. Stocking alcohol

they had the big 55 gallon blue water drums with pump for $89. I'm thinking there were 5-6 of em there.

The water sprinkled on the streets is no longer from the frog pond as our consumption stresses that resource. The water that is pumped into the trucks is potable. However the trucks used are "non-potable" trucks. That means that although the tanks are cleaned, the water that goes in will never be deemed potable again.

That being said, I never run behind the trucks, though supposedly it's fairly safe.

Last year the water used for the roads in Black Rock City came from artesan wells at Fly Geyser. It may or may not be potable, it probably has not been tested, the trucks are not approved for carrying potable water, it may be safe to consume but there are no guarantees and you may wind up with a good case of the trots for a few weeks.
