Online Resources for Cool Shelter, Supplies, Costumes, Etc..

Post by spicylola » Wed Jun 04, 2008 10:07 am

I have been tediously researching online for cool, unique stuff to bring to Burning Man - shelter, supplies, costumes, etc... I am finding so many sites that I would love to share with you all. If you have any similar resources that you know of, please post them here. If you have found better prices/quality than the items posted here, please share! The more resources we share, the more visually stimulating Burning Man will be! It takes time to find all these things, and not everyone has time. Let's put our coconuts together!

Cheap Quality Tipis!!! Great for "American Dream"

Post by spicylola » Wed Jun 04, 2008 10:19 am

http://www.outfitterwarehouse.com/tipi- ... 39_64.html

The outfitterwarehouse.com has a great selection of very reasonably priced quality canvas tents. The tipis (follow the direct link above) range from $198 for a 9' tipi to $616 for a 24' tipi. They have different fabric selections (water, mildew, treated, etc) and they have both the Crow and Sioux styles.

Someone was asking how to get it there to Burning Man since the poles are so long, etc... I was thinking - if someone has a bus or an RV in your camp, they could be tied on to the roof? Please correct me if I am wrong.

I thought - for the price of a Costco Carport - the 9' tipi is an attractive alternative, although smaller in size.

Does anyone have any tipi tips for the playa?

A Beautiful Oriental Rug on the Playa

Post by spicylola » Wed Jun 04, 2008 10:25 am

http://www.vivaterra.com/pls/enetrixp/! ... 44758.page

Vivaterra.com has a Rug called the "Reclaimed Oriental Rug" an indoor-outdoor rug made from recycled plastic bottles and packaging materials. Their tubular threads absorb no stains, can be easily cleaned with a sponge or garden hose, and won't trap water or mildew. They range from $45 (4' x 6') to $119 (6' x 9') Follow the link above to go to the site... then go to "Home and Garden" section "Rugs and Mats"

Imagine: a beautiful Oriental rug that you can hose all the Playa dust off of without it being soaked with water! It can rain on your rugs, no problem.

Full Body Body Paint

Post by spicylola » Wed Jun 04, 2008 10:47 am

http://www.starlight.com/bodypaint.html

This site has some body paint that is safe to use all over the body, does not run or fade, and does not smell or cause allergic reactions like latex... they also have an invisible black light paint that is pretty cool. I haven't tried it yet, have any of you?

Locking Bicycle Trunks

Post by spicylola » Wed Jun 04, 2008 10:51 am

http://www.campingworld.com/browse/skus ... unum=37760

I thought a locking Bicycle Trunk would be a cool thing to attach to my bike, after decorating it. I am a girl who doesn't like to carry a purse, and last time I was at Burning Man it was annoying to have to carry around all that stuff.

Anyone have any experience with these?

GIANT BANANA COSTUME

Post by spicylola » Wed Jun 04, 2008 11:07 am

http://www.frankbeecostume.com/banana.html

O Wow. I found a Giant Banana Costume and the price is $69.99!

How do you like that! Nice price right? ;)

I'll admit it. I'm selfish... I keep some of my favorite costume sites to myself - stay away from my wigs on frankie bee's! But I wouldn't mind seeing dozens of Giant Bananas running around. It would be kind of thrilling actually. Let's have a Giant Banana Rally!!!

Yummy Hand and Foot Care Kit

Post by spicylola » Wed Jun 04, 2008 11:22 am

http://www.burtsbees.com/webapp/wcs/sto ... &langId=-1

It is called the "Tips 'N Toes Hands and Feet Kit" from Burt's Bees. I bought one that came with a pair of socks from the health food store, the one on the Burt's Bees website comes with a Pumice Stone instead... The salves and creams for hands and feet are amazing! Kind of oily, but effective. You put the Coconut Foot Cream on your feet with socks before you go to bed - and it will totally hydrate your feet. I am not sure if I would put it on already cracked feet - that might need different treatment. The kit with 8 mini travel products (for hands and feet) including a lip balm costs about $13

Bodhi Tree Flower Lights

Post by spicylola » Wed Jun 04, 2008 11:29 am

http://www.coolstuffcheap.com/multi-col ... ights.html

These Bodhi Leaf Flower lights are a great alternative to the standard Christmas Tree lights - and they have them in many colors (not just the rainbow version in the link) I used these at a party before and they are beautiful... However! It would probably be an indoor to semi-indoor thing, because they say sunlight fades the colors. It would be really cool to see these inside some shelters... They are not exactly cheap... I bought the six pack which is about 60' for $120 plus tax and shipping... I will be reusing them at Burning Man.

Thai Fisherman's Pants

Post by spicylola » Wed Jun 04, 2008 11:51 am

http://www.fishermanspants.com/collection.html (expensive, but nice)

http://www.thaicraftwarehouse.com/tcwLi ... &instock=0

(cheap)

These pants are kind of like wearing a sarong or wrap skirt but they are really loose comfortable pants that tie in the front and back... They are nice! The websites above (follow the direct links) have a good selection of these style of pants in many different fabrics and materials... You can tie up the legs into shorts for bike riding, etc.

http://www.mydivascloset.com/fakeeyelashes.html

Mydivascloset.com has Fake Eyelashes GALORE! I am going to go nuts in there... I will not have enough time at Burning Man to wear them all! I am excited - I especially love the feather ones! They are not cheap, but hey! It says they are reusable.

As long as Lola is not selling here wares, this is OK, right?

Just like the Blinky sticky thread only for general swag.

I actually like this thread and the enthusiasm.

That's right. Recommendations are welcome. Think it says that somewhere in the guidelines.

Think Geek has some of the coolest stuff I've ever seen (although most of it is more for home/office than BRC).

http://www.thinkgeek.com

I'm getting the solar powered iPod charger (so I can listen to mellow music when I want to sleep), the LED lanterns are amazing, and I think I need a fog blaster. They have a section called 'Outdoor Geek' that has lots of cool camping/survival gadgets as well.

Warning: If you're a nerd (like me) be prepared to waste entire paychecks on that site just getting cool gadgets for your house.

Damnit, you man I could have saved all that time growing this?

I will say though, it's worked out quite well in the long run. Girls are all over it. Even had one girl ask for a mustache ride.

Nope - I don't have anything for sale... just sharing sites that I found while shopping so I don't drive my husband and my friends crazy by saying:

"Look! Look! That is a cool thing for Burning Man"

They are already pulling their hair out.

Thank you all for sharing! Remember that post about the "Reclaimed Oriental Rug"? I just bought one brand new off of Craigslist for $100. $65+ dollars less than on the website. Google any item to see if you can find better deals.
