Where to find a used bus?

Post by Julian » Sun Feb 08, 2009 11:41 pm

My camp is looking to upgrade our art car this year and we're looking to get a hold of an old bus. I know there are plenty out there but finding one closer to LA would be great.

Does anyone have any resources or links to where we could find one? We'd obviously be willing to fly somewhere and drive the bus back, but any help and direction would be appreciated.

Craigslist, adjust your search options to find one within (x) amount of miles.

auction..they go cheap, since most people at the auction aren't looking for a bus. Watched a Blue Bird prison bus go for $100..wish I had bid on it.

Do a search for government surplus auctions/liquidators. Just saw a bus on a gov surplus site the other day for $150. YMMV. Depends on where you live and how far you want to go to get one.

Most likely with the window bars, inside grill and gate, and shackles...

Bondage to go

Trigg Bus Sales
http://triggbussales.com/buses.cfm
Sometimes there is a real steal there. About a 20 minute taxi ride from the airport. I most likely would not be free to offer a ride at the hours they would be open. Who knows? They might even pick you up.

I know of a bus in Newbwerg Oregon for sale but it looks too old and beat up for Burning Man.

It had all the cages, and window screens..but no shackles. Although I did find a pair in a police van that came up for auction...as well as handcuffs and two Kevlar vests.

for those offering help/resources, thanks.

and to you wise asses dispensing sarcasm and unhelpful snidery, thanks, got a laugh out of it.

and next on the list is finding someplace in LA where it can live while we work on it. I'm starting to intuit that that is the real task.

Actually, one thing which stopped me from buying a bus a few years back was lack of a place for the bus to live while I worked on it. (And now I am living close enough to a friend with a house who is probably still willing to let me park/squeeze a bus in the back yard, but lack the money. It is always one or the other!)

I've been telling people my retirement plan is to live in a converted school bus somewhere. :D (Of course, if the economy doesn't improve, that may no longer be a joke by the time I retire...! )

Oh, not that far away, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, just about fifteen to thirty minutes (depending upon traffic), from where I live.

That bus has been taunting me each time I pass it going home from the job site. It is only 1500 (in big numbers across the windshield).

Perhaps you are right and it would have a rebirth there.

Has anyone posted this link yet?

(Too bad my credit is so bad, there are a couple buses there which look in good shape.)

Oh, and they also have FEMA trailers!

www.used-bus-sale.com has dozens of busses for bid ranging in price from a few hundred dollars to over $100,000. Don't know what your budget is and desire to fix one up. The closest ones to LA was one in Lompoc, CA and another in Apache Junction, AZ. Most were in the south and northeast states. Some are gutted, others still have seats and ready to haul passengers while others have been converted.
