My gift to you....

Post by Madgirl » Tue May 18, 2010 8:23 pm

The other day in a fit of boredom at work I was daydreaming about the burn and I found myself thinking about gifting on the playa. I've been struggling with this - I really want to give something back to the rest of the BM community but I don't know how I feel about the idea of giving material things. And then it hit me!

One of the most memorable things about the burn for me is the Temple. I spent hours there last year, reading the things that people had written and looking at the photos they had left. The amount of emotion contained in that small space still blows my mind and the Temple burn was one of the most amazing and spiritual experiences of my life. And then I got to thinking: what about all those people who can't make it to the burn this year but have letters/photos/messages/whatever that they would like to put at the Temple?

So this is for all you burners out there that can’t make it home this year but might have something you want delivered to the Temple: I want to take it there for you. While I would love to say that I have unlimited storage and cargo space, that’s unfortunately not the case, so I have to ask that you keep it small – a letter/email or photo or small object. I would hate to have to turn people away if I get more requests than I can handle so hopefully that won’t happen!

If you have something you would like me to deliver (or questions, or comments, or whatever), contact me at [email protected]. Most likely the easiest way to get things to me will be by mail but of course I’ll be willing to try and work something else out if need be.

Please pass this on to all the other burners you know (I’m thinking regional groups, etc) because I want to make sure this reaches as many people as possible. I am hoping to get some of my campmates involved, and if there is anyone out there who would be interested in helping with this project I would love to have you join me!

Dusty hugs and kisses to my burner family,
~Madgirl

Ah what a lovely idea! I might have to take you up on it as well. I have purchased my ticket, but will not know if I am going until Aug. 6 due to bullshit obligations. Either way, just wanted to give some props on a great idea. All the best.

Not only do I like it, I'm game to help. I should have some excess transport capacity from Bellingham WA (northwest corner of the state) if someone wants something brought from this region and would rather hand off directly rather than via mail.

Swampdog - I'd love to have your help! I'm thinking the easiest way to organize this will be by region....I'm in Colorado, and I've got another offer for help from Illinois. Haven't had any requests for deliveries yet but I'll keep you updated!

As a newbie, I think I will ask others that I know if I can take something for them. It is a great idea. I didn't know how I could contribute, but this just feels right.

If anyone needs cash or negotiable stocks and bonds transported to the playa, I would like to offer my services for this. Also gold bars, diamonds and jewlery could be transported as well.

I'm trustworthy---ask my mother!

It's true.

She said to wear your sweater on the playa too.
And don't forget to eat.

I have a personal reason for my visit to the Temple this year. I will offer to help, but I'm in Southern Oregon. Not many folks around here. But what is best? What's needed?

This is such a wonderful idea. I am in Southern California, and would love to offer this to burners who aren't going to make it! PM me if you would like. I will be in a cargo van and will likely be able to bring a fair amount with me...but would prefer to bring small items.

:D I am really excited about this!
Finally moving to SF...can't WAIT!

This is a nice idea, kind of like dropping prayers on the western wall without being there.

I will be going to the Temple to take someone home for the last time so I don't mind helping too. If you get anyone needing things delivered from Houston to the Temple, please PM me.

Dammit FaeTora, You beat me to it for the Houston area!!!! So I'll take Katy TX! If you're in the Katy TX area and want to have something delivered to the temple this year pm me and I'll get it out there! I'll even take a picture to share with you!

***edit: BTW Madgirl, I got goosepimples reading about your gift! EXCELLENT IDEA and I hope that you don't mind all of us doing our bit from our areas (or in-other-words glomming onto your idea)

MistressSybs, if you are in Houston if you need a ride to BM, I will be meeting up with the guys tonight to talk about the trip. If you need a way to get there I can check and see if we have room. We are figuring out tonight how we are getting there ourselves and who all will be joining the group to go, cost, etc.

Just throwing it out there.

I don't think that's pee. I think it's condensation from having steady alcohol beer breath kissing it.

Of course I don't mind you glomming onto the idea! The more the merrier :D

At this point the biggest thing you can do to help is to spread the word. I've only had a few requests for deliveries and I'm afraid this idea isn't reaching as many people as I would like. Feel free to mention it to non-burners as well....there's no reason they should be excluded!

Thanks all!

I'll let the people I know know about it and as I said I don't mind helping. As of today I am now bringing two home so any other deliveries would not be a problem. Thank goodness for distractions.
