Adivce on running a refridgerator on The Playa?

Post by southcoaster » Fri Jun 18, 2010 2:26 pm

Hello e.BRC,
I am looking for any advice on running a fridge at burning man. My camp (Bacon Without Borders) cooks a large amount of bacon each year and in addition to the meat (which is vacuum sealed so it can can be kept quite easily in cooler of ice) we have quite a few fresh ingredients to use in cooking and on the bar (mint, various fruits and veggies that dont like getting hot or dry, etc.). I want the hedonistic pleasure of Bacon Julep on friday morning.

I can source generators and batteries relatively easily but i'm just not sure of the most efficient method for keeping a normal (~18cu ft.) fridge/freezer cold for 7 days.

all advice appreciated. Thanks!

I've done this. You want a nice fuel-efficient and quiet Honda (or Yamaha) generator, and make yourself this external fuel supply setup: http://ilynne.com/captaingoddammit/

In the overall scheme of things, the fuel to keep the power on 24/7 is a minimal expense vs. the worth of your refrigerated goods on the playa. I wouldn't/didn't shut the fridge off until it's time to go home.
If you can scrape up enough batteries and a big enough inverter to run the fridge a few hours you could shut down the generators for a few hours but most likely the hardware you'd need would cost you more than just bringing some extra gas.
