used golf cart advice needed, partially disabled person...
I cannot afford a golf cart this year...1% chance yes maybe buuuut...i doubt it.
I am also a virgin burner going 2010..yeah! Finally!
I have a damaged nerve due to a botched back surgery, I can make it here n there with a cane and (omg a walker...plz no!...good for stretching but agh...) i also have a bike but riding due to the seat and my condition pile drives my spinal injury, so ouch!!!!
I do not wish my doctor to offer to up my medication "so I can get around better while on my trip"
I'd rather kill a golf cart than my happy, beautiful self!
I have been kindly told I'll be a bit stranded/stuck in camp/etc if i cannot do much gettin' around..."it is a WIDE spread event" bla bla bla....
I have been told I can use my disabled placard but I drive a YUKON not very green!....(if the dmv allows me to transfer to other vehicles, as in default world does I'd be ok and find a mini car owner buuut...not sure?)
I live in reno/tahoe and I looked on **** ******list and saw gas, elec, types...and could use all the advice possible for buying one over the winter for next time around, as in 2011.
I do not wish to buy from **** online auction site...I think it's betta to buy locally from ****** ****
Gas seems best????
Electric is????
Vintage is????
I need to keep it simple, so nothing powered by rocket fuel please!
I am good at driving them (into the ground) not fixing them or a fixer either...arg....just wanna score one that is decent!
I have a 4x8 little trailer...it tilts and is one solid sheet of 8ply birch...one of those cheapo made in china jobs...and not done as to fold up (and fall apart!)
I will paint and decorate it in a very cool fashion, part time artist here also!
(any good fun ideas to make it look special would be great too!)
used gas powered prices were decent, i think???? about $1,200 obo but maybe in winter/spring/summer I can do betta on price????
I saw a pair of awesome looking vintage, harley daivdson ones with a trailer for $1400 each obo on **** ********** yesterday, they run, i cannot recall if gas powered or electric though...but they were sure looked kewl...a girly one and a boyish one and the ad said 3k if on ****....so hmmm...they looked like no other I have ever seen but i don t shop for them so what do I know?

Buying a vintage anything if you are not able to perform repairs or even the most basic service does not make a lot of sense. Vintage equals constant tinkering and repairs, hard to get parts and lack of technical advice. I would suggest gas powered and something that parts can still be bought for. IE: a Yamaha would be a good choice, but there are others. Some maintainence on the Playa is mandatory if you expect the vehicle to last through the week. The BM Staff uses gas powered golf carts and each evening every unit is serviced.
Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both right.

if you cannot afford a decent golf cart, and cannot spend all week fixing a crappy one, just use your Yukon (assuming you get the DMV handicapped placard). Try to decorate it a bit if you can. Is it white? If so, it will fit right in as-is....

Get a gas-powered one, by all means.
Electric units have two problems: You have to recharge them somehow, which generally means the extra expense of a QUIET Yamaha or Honda generator, which is a gas engine anyway, and your batteries can go dead just anywhere, which sucks. It's a lot easier to pour in a little gas than to deal with dead batteries.

Dragonfly is right. Get the license for your Yukon for this year. Deadline to get everything to the BMORG is July 31st.
http://www.burningman.com/on_the_playa/ ... enses.html
This gives you the option of taking out your car out to see the sites if you can't get hooked up with an art car tour or somesuch.
Work on something better for next year.

I would strongly suggest you get in touch right now with the Black Rock City Department of Mobility:
BlackRockCityDepartmeantofMobility
At BLACK ROCK CITY DEPARTMENT OF MOBILITY, we offer the gift of mobility to disabled Burners who might have difficulty traveling to the far reaches of Black Rock City. It is our goal to expand and enhance the opportunities for our Themecamp guests to PARTICIPATE!
Hometown: Oakland, CA
Contact: BRCMobility (at) gmail (dot) com
They are on the Center Camp ring and may have charging capability. Usually they are placed right in front of what was called Lance Camp, now a DPW project. I've participated in decorating some pretty rad mutant electric wheelchairs built by Big Dale who founded the camp a few years ago and has now passed it on to the current crew. They are all volunteers, so capabilities vary from year to year.

Re: used golf cart advice needed, partially disabled person.
The DMV doesn't care whether the car is licensed to you or someone else, but you can't switch every day. The car needs to get a sticker for the event. So if you find a smaller car, you can get licensed with that. It's not only greener, as you mentioned, I'd think it's also easier to get around in a smaller vehicle.moonrise wrote:if the dmv allows me to transfer to other vehicles, as in default world does I'd be ok and find a mini car owner buuut...not sure?
As Token said, make sure you register for a disabled license now. Follow the link and fill out the questionaire. Make sure you bring your placard and paperwork from your state DMV, they need to see that at the BRC DMV.
I might be off the mark here but I believe that no prior arrangements need to be made regarding vehicles with handicap placards.Dragonfly is right. Get the license for your Yukon for this year. Deadline to get everything to the BMORG is July 31st.
Is someone has a valid, state issued placard then no entity can mandate prior arrangements for the sake of 'permission' to use it. However, it is a good idea to give the DPW a heads up so that they can provide guidance on how best to get around the city and what areas are restricted to all vehicles, etc.

Isotopia, I don't think that is correct, but it could be explored by individuals with DMV, the sooner the better. BRC has a different interlocking regulatory environment than a USA metropolis. There is a good argument that your suggestion applies to a standard USA metropolis with tons of case law. SF equals not BRC, better or worse!

Law is a mysterious thing that attorneys rarely speculate upon. We are enamored as a culture in the USA with an absolutist view from America's Christian zeitgeist. That makes law seem absolutist, but it isn't so. The system has its advantages and weaknesses. I think BRC can do better than that absolutism and the adversarial legal system, but we shall see.

Thank you, everyone 1000xs over.
i will email brcmobility some seeing eye. very gooood idea!
too late to renew the placard now, but i could get it done by the event arrival time for me!
i am joining a small bar camp (i don t drink, rarely...maybe nurse 1 or 2 at most a day) so i'll be handy...isn't that participating? i have a cool modified tux and do some awesome drinks (former matire'd) they invited me a while back and we've been making plans. they keep it light but do a couple of fun parties. i gonna teach em a few new showy drinks.
i'm going to have more than the norm prep, cause i am a virgin and don't have a stored bman stash...lol...i have some stuff buuuut...not some vital things yet. the camp i am joing is going to help me set up and break down and i'm gonna bring some cool bar things...fun stuff...and safe for non-moop
luckily i am local and can find things in reno tahoe...and i drove out and kicked it up on the playa 2 weeks ago...hot hot hot, dusty 10xs over...but was good time...dpw was NICE...at least the guys me and my pal met. also met a rancher, total burner, said come and take a break if i get too overwhelmed. they have a pond etc..i can swim there etc. friend of friends it turned out...i could pay the 10 bux eachway to drive in n out, and may go there before i drive home, to swim and maybe sleep for an extra night. they have peacocks and i had those as pets as a kid! so we hit it off.
it would be cool if there were disabled peeps that offer rides here n there just to get out further and what not.
gonna email brcmobility now!
thanks all!

People who have staff permits have gotten tickets from the LE!!!
Just follow protocol and you should have no issues!
Good luck.

First off, it's the DMV, not the DPV. Second, if you don't preregister, it throws a big wrench in the process. You'll end up spending twice the time at the DMV, or more if the computers are down at the time, and you'll stress out the Volunteers there, cause they have to special process the whole thing while MV's are piling up outside.Isotopia wrote:I might be off the mark here but I believe that no prior arrangements need to be made regarding vehicles with handicap placards.

Why not make it easier on yourself and them, and just preregister. Only takes a couple of minutes.
I emailed the DMV Hotties...they were very nice.
The gal told me to just register with my old placard papers #'s etc online and show up with my renewed placard and that would be fine.
I will try to re-register if they instruct me to.
I don't want to bombard them, so I'll email after I get the doc to renew the thing...and after the caliornia dmv fun day, sheesh, it'll be good to get it on track though.
Gracias Amigos!

One other thought ...
The - ha ha - "roads" in BRC can be very uneven/bumpy, especially later in the week, meaning you will get bounced around. If your injury would be aggravated by this, consider extra padding/pillows for your ride, or whatever would ameliorate the negative effects due to jostling.
BTW I'm not trying to be helpful here; I was just looking for an opportunity to use the word "ameliorate" in a sentence. <smug smiley face>
