3m respirator masks

Post by Undecided » Thu Oct 14, 2010 5:20 pm

Can anyone help me find the right mask.

Are there any suggestions on good half face or painter masks?

Ones to avoid.

proper filters to accompany the mask so I don't render it useless :)

Any feedback or suggestions would be welcome and appreciated.

(Reason I am asking about 3M is because I can get wholesale prices on these)

I switched to a kaffiyeh (or shemagh) from a dust mask this year and you couldn't pay me to switch back. Double layer of cloth covering your mouth, easy to get out of your way, super comfortable and I could breath with no problems in the middle of the worst whiteouts the playa could throw this year (and there were quite a few towards the end of the week)

Was planning on picking one of those up too. Especially since I found it in the obnoxiously fantastic color of neon lime green :)

3M masks work good, and pretty much any filter will work, assuming your talking about the half face respirators. And, should they get clogged with dust, you can always change the filter. The cheapo masks work fine, as well. Provided you don't experience a 10 hour dust storm. Its really, what your comfortable wearing, for a possibly extended period of time.

I've tried lots of different masks, but this is the best one I've ever used

And the company is great too.

I second the keffiyeh/shemagh, I loved mine this year...actually brought 3 with me and ended up giving two to my fellow campers.

Only slight problem was that everyone thought I was a ranger when I was wearing it :)

I've been looking. Just cautious on the filters at this point.

The filters are typically for chemicals but will stop dust. Don't be to concerned. If a rag will stop dust, these will too. And, they go on and off, much quicker. We got lucky this year, with very little dust....but always plan for the worst!

I used a simple mask from the hardware department. It worked well and was only a few dollars.

I'm not finding a link to my mask (if you go to http://playabound.wordpress.com and click on the what to wear safety third category, it's there).

It's some sort of mask for wood-working (made for the smaller, dust-like particles), and I LOVED it. I could walk straight out into a whiteout (and I mean OUT, I couldn't see my friends walking with me) and breathe fine. And talk and be heard.

I'm not really into wearing a scarf, so I liked that I could just attach it to my bag/hip pack. Pop it on and off as needed.

Where were you camped?

We were pounded with white-outs from Friday on this year (Esplanade & 3:30)- it took me 45 minutes to get from my camp to 7:30 & D on Friday due to the winds & dust (normally 15-20 minutes), were in a sporadic white-out most of Saturday culminating in a howling white-out during the Burn, and Sunday's white-out lasted almost all day.

This is me after trying to watch the Burn. The shirt was fresh & black when I out it on Sat. morning.

yes, I know there shouldn't be that much dust around my eyes, but the goggles got in the way of the kissing...

9:45 and H....must have missed it! Or maybe, if its not more than 2 hours, it isn't bad. 2007 and 2008 were bad. Luckily, I had my czech gas mask both those years.

Single Chamber respirator

Post by Copa » Thu Jun 23, 2011 6:45 pm

Hi -

In preparation for my first burning man I purchased a couple of these. The recommendation I got was to have a single chamber for the heavier dust storms (lighter) and then carry some bandanas for the lighter ones.

Good price and already packed!

Cheers -

I'm going to bump this mask again. I've tried almost all of the others and for comfort and fit, this one can't be beat!

Another place to look for general goggles + respirators/masks is Northern Safety (respirators, goggles). I'll have to check out jkisha's as well, but at $60, that quite a bit compared to the 3M mask that seemed to work for me.

I started to lose my voice around day 9.

I'm just gonna bring; paper disposable painter's masks & surgical masks--great for underneath a neoprene paint ball mask, a 3M respirator, a Shemagh, bandanas, and whatever ele I can throw at the dust stormages!!

I don't wanna catch that playa lung BS later on down the road...I avoided that, but it happened to a few in my circle, man did they complain for months after the burn

One of my girls gave me a Respro Bandit for Father's Day.

I'm not sure if it's overkill or insufficient but it sure looks nice, what else could one want?

That's pretty cool! Seems like a nice compromise between a bandana and a mask (me, I'm sticking with the mask).
