Anyone like to knit?

Post by TomServo » Sat Nov 13, 2010 7:06 pm

I love learning new things! But I never got into Crochetting or knitting. I'm willing to pay, or trade with anyone who can knit me a Cthulhuclava.

http://thingsandideas.wordpress.com/200 ... -eldritch/

I do know how to make full sized kilts, and would gladly make one for you as trade. Obviously, Id use cheap wool blend...as scottish worsted wool is kinda expensive. I can also press buttons for you with monetary compensation. Either way, Id pay for the pattern.

This is kind of in contravention of the rules of the forum. Good luck though

Not really. Trading services happens here, and he knows enough to take the gory details off the board.

Well, I'm not selling anything. And this was done in the spirit of barter economy...not gift economy. Yes, burning man has evolved. Remember 1999?

As you're a mod then I have to accept it as writ. The resource forum mentions specifically not bartering, and I've heard this mentioned as a cultural no-no elsewhere, thus the confusion.

My apologies for the confusion, I had thought bartering outright was considered a commodification or other degradation of the forum. (Not that I agree with it, just that that's how I understood things.)

@JStep, I think you can point out good deals....they just don't want the board becoming loaded with commerce. He ain't exactly sellin' Pepsi

@tomservo....one of my sisters can knit like no tomorrow (but she's been kidnapped by the Mormons) *sigh* we're hoping she comes back *sigh* it is exhuasting *sigh* it has been a trying past several years....*faceplant* *poof of dust* *choke*

Ironically, I am the only family member who has told her "I have an open mind"...now I am the main go between, if she only knew! ...*faceplant* everyone else told her "your nuts" *sigh* I can see the crack in the cosmic egg occurring...I just wish she would hurry the F up and hatch!

Sorry I can't knit................................*sigh*

Try the costume and crafting thread!
I'm the MAN in a truck, burner who is stuck, you're in luck! I'll whip out my BIG tow chain and not charge you, not even one lousy buck!

It appears you are correct, bartering is now ok. I'm a total newb and mis-spoke in my post. I apologize, I was posting out of turn.

Technically there is no bartering, and it can cross the line when centered around large items such as RVs. Small stuff eases on by. We could be hard asses but so far, we've not felt the need. That can change if folks get obnoxious about it.

My first year at burning man, I was denied a drink, trying to barter a XXX barbie... Only to see an off duty LEO get a drink, in exchange for a Washoe (or Pershing) County Sherrifs Dept. Ball point pen. I'm not suprised BMORG abandoned the barter thing.

Knitting? My wife has been knitting blanket/ground covers from plastic grocery bags for the homeless. For a while there we almost had a room full of plastic bags. Goal is to get them done by the Christmas season. Killer on the hands.

I've been corrected - my wife told me she is not knitting - she is crocheting

I've learned that as well..knitting is with needles and crocheting is with hooks...
but the g/f is a knitting/crocheting fiend, she want's to start 'knit bombing' things, and I think this would be something else she'd be willing to try..
I'll hit her up on it, soon and let you know..

It's well beyond my knitting skills. My sister and niece could do it, but they live in England and one's got a full time job and runs her household and the other is starting Grad School. (I'd take my niece in a minute if she wanted to go. Nephew, too.)
However, even at my level of knitting, I feel I can sit on the sidelines and cheer.
Just an idea--if there is a trade each could buy (or at least pay for) the material of their own eventual project. That means that it's just the labor and each has the quality of yarn (finding something properly squamous might be hard--or subjective) or fabric that he/she wants. There are amazing yarns out there these days. You might not want wool--if it itches all over your face, yikes! And don't get those fancy eyelash yarns either--they moop. Well, that's assuming you want to wear it on the playa.
And I gotta wonder, are there Flying Spaghetti Monster hats, too? Invisible Pink Unicorns? Xemu?

No, you don't have to accept it as "writ". There is some wiggle room on what happens. We at least have the chance to discuss these things on the board. That isn't the same thing as influencing policy--the LLC doesn't listen to us as far as we can tell. And AntiM makes her decision based on her understanding of the rules and her experience. But if we want to discuss it with her, we have a subforum (and well we can do it in thread, just like we're doing now) in which to discuss it. It's not a democracy, but it's not a Tsarist or Communist or Fascist state with a secret police and lots of "disappeared" former posters, either.

The wool would be for the kilt. Worsted wool doesn't itch...and, now that I think about it... neither did the wool blend. I think the liner helps, in that regard. Its about 8 yards of fabric, but suprisingly comfortable in hot and cool weather. Wearing a balaclava..or Cthulhuclava, in this case, is a different story. Strictly a night time accessory.

Yarn comes in wool, too. That's what I was thinking of.
And if you're going to wear it near fire, don't get polyester.

Ahhhh! Ok! I know nothing about knitting....No, I wouldn't wear it around fire.

It all makes sense now...My balaclava was a little itchy, but kept my face nice and warm at night. And I got strange looks from LEOs...

If you look in the ticket section, any of the rideshare offers, and folks looking for camps, there's plenty of barter. When it comes to situations like this, yes, I should delete it and scold. But really, I don't mind walking the edge of the slippery slope. Could I be challenged? Absolutely. Do I care? Not so much. I try to stick to the rules, but I also care about the health of the community at large. According to some people, this makes me the worst mod ever. Or the best. But posts about swapping a dome for an RV? Not so much. Swapping your RV rebuilding skills for help getting a dome made? l see trading of skills differently than concrete items. Hope that's okay by you, LOL.

I'm a volunteer in Utah. I could lose my gig at any time. It is what it is. I'm not the purity police.

Most of us think you are doing a stellar job under difficult circumstances. (I can think of at least two former mods who broke under the horrors of the job.)
You can't please everyone for sure, but there are advantages of being the llc's red-headed step child--there's a certain degree of freedom that we get here, that perhaps wouldn't be if we got more official attention.

Thank you, AntiM.

I'm not complaining. I reread the community guidelines, and indeed....trading is not allowed. So does anyone want to make one of these:

But takes about 20 hours to knit one sock... so, no I won't knit a kilt as it would probably cost you a grand!!

Is the knitted project. Knitting a kilt would probably take a year or so...which is why I sew em using pre woven fabric.
