okay, new plan. LOOKING FOR ROAD TRIP COMPANION

Post by basshead » Fri Apr 22, 2011 10:32 am

Instead of flying into Reno, I'll be driving from NJ to Reno, and then from there to BRC. I'm looking for some local NJ/PA burner(s) to come with, possibly help out with some gas, and experience the drive across country with. Any takers??

I know a nice New Jersey burner that I'm really hoping will make it home this year, and have emailed him to ask if he's looking for a rideshare. :)

I think 80s exciting to buzz past, but 70 has more to see. Maybe get off 80 at 77/71 or 75 then pop onto 70 till Denver and head back up to 80. Then you can experience the joy of Kansas cows next to wind turbines. At least then you'll have a reduction in that long lame drag between Chicago and SLC. Although you will stop in Little America and eat a overpriced grill cheese. :D

On the rideshare note, that NJ guy the Savannah was talking about is totally cool. You should see his van. Although it's always a good idea to be part of your local group newsletter thing. Along with receiving the JRS so you'll know when the rideshare site gets updated for this year.

thanks i subscribed to those newsletters.. a couple days ago i put an offer on rideshare, so i'll wait for that to get updated. hopefully NJ guy needs a ride!!

P.S. thanks for the travel advice, Kansas cows beats billboards by far. (so does grilled cheese, even if it's overpriced)

MyLarry gets the twitches driving through Kansas. Just too flat. We nearly killed each other by Dodge City.

Ha! I've always wondered how I would feel in such an open place, having always lived with distant mountains and (much closer) large hills surrounding me at a reliable and comforting distance. I felt like a gunslinger with her back safely to the wall.

Now I fear the answer is confirmed. On the plains, I'd feel like a mouse in a newly mown field, who hears the cry of the hawk. And gets the twitches.

Heh, I an just the opposite. Lived all my life on the great plains, and I get nervous when there's anything on the horizon line but trees. I like to be able to see the weather coming. :)

Nebraska has 24 hour weather radar in their rest stops.
Great feature.

Opportunity to visit the no 1 cabela's too.
WARNING COMMERCE
Great discounts in their bargain cave.
Most tents set up outside too.

According to radar here, the world is about to end.

i've driven cross-country three times and i've found the only way to keep my sanity, especially in the middle states, is to just smoke ridiculous amounts of weed the whole way. it makes it kind of fun, actually. otherwise, awful!

it makes me too twitchy. good company, caffeine and music worked better for me...but still not a fun ordeal.

I think that a combination of those both of your answers will be the perfect cocktail for getting across for me. might add a hint of something else to that cocktail, who knows ;)

Just be sure your ride-mate is cool with these ideas ahead of time. You wouldn't want that person requesting they be dropped off in some city, after all.

nuthin better than folks getting stoned (or added hint of something else) driving. Especially long distances on a boring freeway.

Makes it safer for everyone around you, thanks for that.

I'd be pretty upset if I found out my passenger was putting me at risk of having my van confiscated, by playing random cocktail in it.

Yikes. I just don't want my friends riding with intoxicated drivers, no matter how well-managed or savvy, or people in possession (unless they are forewarned months before the trip--before they are desperate and stuck and somewhere in Colorado, & make the decision to risk it).

A federal or state drug conviction can disqualify a person for federal student aid, which is relevant to the person I had in mind.

I was once stranded on the side of the highway with 6 suitcases while the driver was hauled off drunk by the police. (Top speed = at least 92 mph.) He hadn't seemed drunk at the start of the drive. I couldn't drive, so the tow truck driver gave me a lift to the gas station. I'd managed to extract $36 for a cab from my errant driver while he was in the back seat of the squad car. (He had the nerve to ask me "how much will be left?") Good times.

Everyone should know how to drive, including a real car with a stick, just for survival reasons.
And I think you should know how to ride a bike, for the same reasons.

Of course, I think people should know how to drive well, well enough for emergency situations, including assault.

just a joke guys, don't worry. i wasn't being serious about that.

I was once stranded on the side of the highway with 6 suitcases while the driver was hauled off drunk by the police.
AH, i would hate to experience something like that Savannah. And don't worry, if your Jersey buddy ends up riding with me, nothing of that sort will be going on. Promise.

Also, I'm gonna be taking my time getting over there (two or three weeks) so i'm not going to be taking all highways. I'm gonna try to really see this country. So I don't think it'll be too rough of a drive. I think it's gonna be a blast!

I knew how to drive then, but I wasn't licensed (the family car was sold while I was training but before I could test. It was a dick move).

If it weren't for all the cops standing around at the time, I probably would have risked it. It was less than 5 miles.

I'm licensed now.

I was talking about motorcycles, just to be clear, but it applies to bicycles too.

It now seems clear that in the worse conditions, bikes will go where even motorcycles can't.

And repairing bikes will definitely be a useful post-apocalyptic skill, judging from japan.
