Come join us at SCARAB Camp on Tuesday night, 8-10:45pm, for our Mardi Gras: Night in New Orleans Dance.
We're located at 6:30 and Ego. We'll have beads to bead ya wit, and greazy fonk from the Meters, Dr. John, the Nevilles, Wild Magnolias, Prof. Longhair, etc.
As with my African and Brazilian dances over the last 3 years, the first 50 dancers get a free CD of the night's mix (the SCARAB ladies will cull the gyrators from the spectators).
Put on the purple and gold, and let the good times roll!

Hopefully, sans the characteristic red puke all over the street in front of Pat O's.Dr. Pyro wrote:I'll be there; I'm sure it will be exactly like hanging out at the piano bar at Pat O'Brien's.
Our camp thought of having a crawfish bo'l, but the stench of days-old carcass shells would pretty much clear out Black Rock City and the playa would still stink next year.

prof. longhair
Yay! I just discovered Professor Longhair a couple days ago. Heard his version of "Junco Partner", finally figured out who The Clash were ripping off.
Can't wait to hear some boogie-woogie on the playa!

Fess rules!
Yep, Fes rules. Check out his album "Prof. Longhair--Rock and Roll Gumbo", featuring Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown on guitar and fiddle. Excellent stuff! There's also a live album of Fes playing at a party aboard the Queen Mary, where Paul McCartney rented the entire ship for Linda's b-day bash. Fes is my favorite New Orleans musician.

Anybody got a favorite version of Iko Iko? I prefer the Dr. John version although the Dixie Cups are hot.
Anytime I feel like throwing my gear out the window and convincing myself I'm not good enough to keep gigging, I remind myself of Sugarboy Crawford and the original "Jockamo."
I'm bringin' my washboard! WOOHOO!

a purient aside
I have a nice mental picture of Justine Bateman singing it in some movie many moons ago. Funny, I'm not hearing any sound to go with this mental picture......
Mardi Gras parades
Also, SCARAB Camp will be taking our Mardi Gras floats out on parade around the streets and open playa of Black Rock City throughout the week. If you see us out there, jump right in to the 2nd line. We'll have shots fo ya, and the great music of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, 11:11 (who have played Black Rock City!), etc., plus our own original Mardi Gras Processional song (recorded in the bowels of Snipe Bog Studios in Austin, Texas).
Just look for the SCARAB Queen atop her 15 ft. mobile bead throwing perch!
