All About Participating in the Pottie Project

A unique and distinctive culture emerges from the Burning Man experience. Rooted in the values expressed by the Ten Principles, this culture is manifested around the globe through art, communal effort, and innumerable individual acts of self-expression. To many, it is a way of life.

OK Robbi. I'm tired of aprons. 2 pirate map, 2 dysfunctional Family Cartoon and 1 StarWars. Next project will be fit tarps to shade skeleton.

These look GREAT! Thank you again!
I got 99% on my waste water test yesterday, so now I can focus on BM shit better.
I think Elder Wrong needs a green apron. I saw the fabric yesterday at Wallace Whirled. I could use some sewing therapy.

Ya, sorry, Ratty's designs sparked the idea and I wanted to do it before the next shiny object appeared. Not right of me to get upset at people then do nothing about it! ;-)

I'd wanted to post this on throne item a day thread, but I had something better there. And since we'd been talking about aprons, I'll just post this here: I made an apron for Rain last night in fabric I'm just in lust with. And I discovered that my original idea for the blessed Elder's apron is a fail, so I'm remaking it in a diff cloth. Still green as Satan commanded, but it's OD green. It's what I have already, and I'm tired of spending money right now.
shiuld have bought 2 yards of Crayola Green muslin like I almost did. Meh.

Holy fucking shit! I cannot believe all the dumb!
So JRS is telling people to bring a 5 gal bucket, garbage bags and...KITTY LITTER!!!!
Did it tell people that it gets to go home with you as trash???!
No!
Guess what's going to happen to that shit/kitty litter filled bag!
You guessed it! The whole kitty kaboodle will be dumped into the hole. Now multiply that by potentially thousands.
You just stopped the trucks.

And no Honey, I don't give a fuck about the benefits of squatting. You follow up your little advertisement with reminders to lift the seat & lid and I'll politely stare at you while you blather. Not my job! My job is to keep the crap off the seats!
Now get off my lawn.

My gawd! The dumb!

I'm seriously considering emailing my entire camp and telling them that if they go this option they have to keep the trash seperate and pack it out themselves. I don't want human waste mixed in with random camp trash. Not cool.

Gawd! At minimum! Do it! Send it out via FB etc. jeezus that would be nasty. I have sorted random kitchen trash in the past and I thought that was the worse. Shit just sends this ugliness to the darkest hell!

I just put up a NO KITTY LITTER post on the Burning Man FB page that links to the blog.burningman.com article. Now some ditz is suggesting not to use cat litter, but still empty the bag into the porto. And what will they do with the now poop smeared empty bag? That's right-down the hole it goes!

One additional line was all they needed. Something to the effect of: "Note: pooping on kitty litter in a bucket is a last resort, as kitty litter must be packed out as trash by the user, and NOT dumped in the portos--which would endanger our entire sanitation contract."

Fortunately, Robbi, I'll wager that pooping in a bucket will be psychologically difficult for most people, who will elect to sit on something more toilet-like whenever possible.

I dunno Savanna, all year I've heard people preferring a bucket over walking uphill both ways thru the driving snow for 20 miles to get to the horrifyingly hellish and soul sucking public potties.
Yah, just one fucking sentence.

One medicinal side effect to using the portos... If you are barefoot, all the acidic urine deposited on the floor by males with poor aim or inadequate range will counteract the playa dust just as surely as a vinegar treatment.

I cannot imagine using a porto while barefoot. It gives me the shivers.

I too was disappointed in the JRS. They could at least quote their own page about personal toilets. http://burningman.org/event/preparation ... -disposal/

The proper way/products are available. Why suggest something that won't be the best alternative to the portas, and even worse, cause problems?!?!

Maybe someone should contact Will Chase and ask him to clarify in the next JRS? http://burningman.org/network/about-us/contact/

Well, I was hoping someone with lots of knowledge about the porta-potties struggles would do it, but I took a stab at it.
Good morning,

In the last JRS you said: "Bring a 5-gallon bucket with a trash bag and some kitty litter to use as an alternative to the potties, should they become inaccessible (or unpumpable) during an extended rainstorm (which can happen — yes, really)."

Is it possible to clarify that all used buckets/bags must go home with you as trash?

The problem I see is that people will dump used bags and kitty litter in the porta-potties, causing problems and disrupting service later on during the event.

Even better, ask people to bring landfill approved and biodegradable portable toilet solutions (wag bag / http://www.cleanwaste.com). Make sure to instruct participants how to store the used bags during the entire week in sealed buckets (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Leaktite-5-g ... /203205720) and dispose of the entire storage bucket setup in approved trash collection sites along with the rest of their trash.

I know poop is a taboo topic but proper handling is essential for a good experience both at the porta-potties and at camp.

Thanks for your consideration,
Overkill or go home.

That is perfect SP! Wow, thank you!
My boss did tell me after I expressed my dissatisfaction to my boss, and hopefully your letter and others I've heard about will secure this a descent treatment if they chose to put out a follow up. Time is running short, so if anyone wants to get their voice heard about this, now is a good time.
I hope to see you in the dirt!
