New and wanting to volunteer

Post by Kimmyism » Mon Oct 18, 2021 1:38 pm

Hi everyone, I have yet to attend a burning man event but am hoping to be able to get tickets and a vehicle pass for 2022. I would like to volunteer as a Registered Nurse to the BRC anywhere my skills can be helpful.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Hi, Kimmyism, and welcome aboard.

Many newcomers introduce themselves by stating what they want from Burning Man.
You stated what you want to contribute. I salute you!

Black Rock City does indeed have a hospital and several first aid stations, and there are opportunities to volunteer, yes.

But it is often recommended not to volunteer in one's first year. There is so much to learn, and Burning Man is so extremely different from any other event you ever heard of that it is easy to be overwhelmed.
In fact, some departments do not accept volunteers in their first year.

You can definitely contribute anyway – just not on a schedule where you need to remember what day it is, and how to tell time (and which way is up).
One classic example of contributing right from the get-go is to help a neighbor set up their tent.

But for now, feel free to tell us more about you, and your plans and hopes for the event in addition to volunteering.

Welcome!

What Eliot said, and maybe do some reading around https://www.google.com/search?q=burning ... +volunteer

Medical is a branch of ESD. https://esd.burningman.org/

They hire out a clinic service http://esd.burningman.org/wp-content/up ... P-2018.pdf which I believe is now CrowdRX.

Then they have volunteers doing a variety of additional medical things.

If you are near a "Burning Man Regional" they will start up their regional campouts post-Covid which also have medical needs, and less dust! People in the regionals meet online, and in-person for happy hours and events. That is an opportunity for an in-person chat with ESD volunteers.

There are some ePlayans who list ESD as their camp who would be knowledgeable.

The event is a big adventure filled with creative people welcoming you.

You are only protected under the good samaritan law if you are registered in the state of NV. You would be opening yourself up to being sued without protection. This is my belief, check with NV nursing licensing board.

Paging Savannah.
Paging Savannah.
Miss Savannah, please see if you can inform us on the obscure-but-thorny issue of malpractice liability when volunteering with ESD Medical, or refer us to such information.

I looked and searched for it on the ESD website, but found none.

Of personal experience... I volunteered for seven years with a different department where thorny issues can also arise, but do not recall hearing of the liability question.

Hey, Mr. Elliot! Thank ye. :D <3

Things change from year to year in ESD, & the leadership in ESD is fantastic, and will lay all of the issues out when a person applies. :) Apply as soon as possible!

Kimmyism, Some Seeing Eye's links are excellent.
