Hello, I am a would-be first-time burner

Post by hoku_sai09 » Mon Jan 02, 2023 7:39 pm

:) Hello, I would like to be a burner. If I'm lucky enough to get tickets, this would be my first time!

I've heard about BM pilgrimage for decades, seen numerouss movies and YouTube clips, etc. At age 70+ finally braved to signed on to be a Burner in 2023.

Adventure Ahoy.

Hello Hoku. Welcome to the weird, wild and wacky world of Burning Man. At age 70+, you'll find yourself not being even close to the oldest human in the desert. Read up as much as you can. Watch Youtube videos and learn as much as you can. Once you hit the playa, you'll feel that all videos and other collateral falls short from what you're experiencing. You'll wish you started 20 years sooner. Better late than never.
It's just 8 short months off and talk of tickets should start probably within the month.
Hopefully we'll see you in the dust.
Sham....

Hello Hoku!
Welcome to the madness! Watch out, you might get what you wish for! Last year was my first burn and I have never been the same since (in a gooder than good way). :D
I am 67, a whistle younger than you, and I lived to tell the story. Here is my blog about the experience if that is of interest to you. http://cresswellwalker.com/sail7cs/
As Sham says, like me, you will wish it hadn't taken so long to get there......but what better place to die!!!!! Ahahhh hahahahaha
If I can be any help at all, you just ask!
Cresswell

Oh yes, I remember my first time. And that feeling of regret that I hadn't become a burner sooner. But that's okay! hoku_sai09, we'll make up for it.

I'm 74 now, my first time was 1998.
I saw pictures of previous burns, but the one that stuck out was people playing in a mud puddle.
My feeling was Been There Done That, so I cancelled the idea, even though I live 6 hours away from the playa.

Then, somewhere I read about what it takes to survive out there, and that got me excited.
I'd never thought of camping in such a place as the playa, but how to do it comfortably and safely and as cheap as possible really floated my boat.

And thus began 19 trips to the event. My promise to myself is if I can't do the tent and shade thing, I won't go in an RV or in a P2P camp.
