On volunteering, go to Playa Info in Center Camp when you are on playa and inquire.
Out of 80,000, there are at least 20,000 volunteers in departments. There are about 30 departments. Some do not take 1st year participants. Some need special skill certifications like medical and our fire department.
Playa Info is the place on the playa to find a department match.
One of the best volunteering things you can do is be helpful out and about on the playa. Ask "Do you need help?" That's Mr Sham's projects.

I do costumes/outfits, you can plan some of that in advance or visit the costume camps which will work with you to create one.
