Another First Timer here

Post by Benji » Wed Jun 28, 2023 4:23 am

Hey Guys
I am Benji and I go to the
Playa for the first time this year. By some miracle, a ticket found its way to me and now I am looking to connect with people. I am thinking about joining a camp, but its kinda hard to find out which one fits me best. I want to do some volunteering, but I dont want to commit too much my first time on the playa.
I would also be happy to connect with other first timers😌.
I wish you guys the best!

Hi Benji and welcome to eplaya and Burning Man. Congratulations on getting a ticket--now the fun begins. Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you coming from? What things inspire and excite you? If you have a local burner group, you should join them and see if there are people to camp with. There's lots of reading up to do and plans to make.
It's suggested that you don't volunteer your first year, since there is so much to learn and see. There will be lots of opportunities to help out on small projects you might run into.
See you in the dust in just a few short months.

I disagree heartily with the notion that newbies shouldn't volunteer their first year. "No spectators" applies to newbies too, and volunteering is an easy way to get involved.

While I wouldn't recommend signing up for 20+ hours of shifts, there are plenty of opportunities where you can volunteer for just a few hours. That will introduce you to aspects of the city you may otherwise never see, and is rewarding in itself.

Agree 100% Papa Bear. It's the way to see more people, more camps, see how others do things. The contacts you make volunteering may end up being lifelong friends.

On volunteering, go to Playa Info in Center Camp when you are on playa and inquire.

Out of 80,000, there are at least 20,000 volunteers in departments. There are about 30 departments. Some do not take 1st year participants. Some need special skill certifications like medical and our fire department.

Playa Info is the place on the playa to find a department match.

One of the best volunteering things you can do is be helpful out and about on the playa. Ask "Do you need help?" That's Mr Sham's projects.

In addition to reading, understanding, and acting on Mr Sham's links and suggestions, I would echo meeting local burners https://regionals.burningman.org/, making a "burning man packing list" search that on the internet to make your own, and thinking through your clothing layers from hot to cold. I do costumes/outfits, you can plan some of that in advance or visit the costume camps which will work with you to create one.

Welcome to ePlaya and your Black Rock City experience!

Thanks to you all for the kind messages and the help. I have heard about burning man online and I always wanted to go. It is kind of hard to describe why, but I am very fascinated by this thought of a shared community. Also I dont really know what to expect, but I guess I will figure things out on the way. I will post a listing on spark to search for a camp. And I am already very excited to go to the playa, but I am also kind of scared that something will go wrong, I dont find a ride or my ticket doesnt work (bought it via the Ticket Exchange Programme).

But I think in the end everything will work out just fine. I think I am going to volunteer, since I need this involvment in an event to really feel connected to it. Also a week is a long time and a little fixed scheduling might not hurt.
