just another virgin
just another virgin
Hello burners, just another virgin intending to join your ranks in 2010!
I've known about Burning Man for a couple years but was too young for actually going to be a real option.
But now at the ripe old age of 18 it is definitely possible, and short of major tragedy or the world ending, I will be there next year.
Burning Man has given me so much already without being part of it, I cannot possibly imagine what I would lose by not going. In a town of unburner-type people, it gets lonely. Knowing there is a fantastic community of good people living it up in the desert is a major hope and inspiration to me, and it has somewhat dissuaded me from my jaded and misanthropic ways.
So with that, I'll leave you for now. I'll undoubtedly have many questions; hopefully I won't irritate anyone with my ignorance.

Names pinemom, but my friends call me "Piney".
Thank you for the welcomes!
I have read the survival guide and will do so many more times. It really is a wealth of information, and I couldn't hope to remember all of it after just one read.
Perhaps it was foolish of me to think I could know yet, but surely a burner is not so complacent with dull reality as the majority of people I've known. Maybe that's the difference: complacency. But, I will of course have to wait and find out for myself. Forgive me for assuming.

Yeah, that's the meaning. Mostly everything I have ever owned appears to be held together by varying degrees of duct tape, string, and random debris. After reading an article about jugaad in rural India, my friend decided it would be my name.
When I do have a mutant vehicle, it will likely be jugaad to an extreme and terrifying level. But for my first burn or two, I think I'll just try to adapt and participate by helping others with their projects.
Speaking of mutant vehicles, are there many motorcycles on the playa? I haven't seen any in pictures, but I assume there must be some mutant bikes.

jugaad;
You're gonna fit in just fine.
I've never seen a motorcycle. It's probably because the speed limit is 5mph and I'm thinking that would be hard to maintain balance at that speed.
Others may have seen one, I've only been going for 5 years.
Small scooters seem to make an appearance dressed in regalia.

There have been some good mutant bicycles and the odd scooter.
I'm not sure if motorcycles are prohibited, but to use one, you would have to meet the mutant rules about appearance, not easy with a bike.
But you would also have to satisfy everyone that you could handle it safely in the very difficult traffic.
It might be easier to apply for playa only (the open area , rather than the city).
The speed limit is 5mph or less.
In the city, less is usually the case.
And the rough roads don't help.

So I figured. I thought it would be worth asking anyway. Five miles per hour isn't exactly a stable speed for 600 pounds on two wheels; I think I'll rule that idea out.
I also had an idea about transportation. Would a small U-Haul truck be worth the cost? I could bring absolutely anything I would need and have a nice place to sleep. Seems like overkill, I know, but there is at least one other person coming with me and a Jeep isn't exactly roomy.
But because of the cost, a trailer could be a better idea. I figure about five gallons of water per person per day with bathing accounted for. If I count on three people total, I'd need a bit over 100 gallons of water, which weighs upwards of 800 pounds. So, I'm beginning to wonder what my best option would be. Any thoughts?
