Hello from Houston!
Hello everyone,
My name is Sarah and I'm a 22-year student in Houston, Texas. I'm going to Burning Man for my first time this year, and I'm pretty excited about meeting wonderful people here. I will probably come in from Thursday to Sunday.
I'd love to join a theme camp--I'd be happy to help cook, paint, whatever is needed. I basically just don't want to be stranded, since it will be my first Burning Man and I couldn't convince any of my student friends to put together $500 for the ticket and preparation. :\
I guess I have a question for everyone here. If there was one thing that you could change about your first time at Burning Man or do differently, what would that be?
Cheers!

Hello and welcome!
First (assuming this isn't some lame April fools joke), I wouldn't go for just four days, if you're gonna pay $300 bucks for a ticket go the whole time.
Second, $500 bucks.... if the ticket is $300..... how do you plan to get there?

But you'll regret not going the whole time when it is time to go back. I promise.leftmespeechless wrote:Ah, you've misunderstood me! I've saved up a bit more for the trip, although unfortunately this time I don't want to go for more than three or four days. I was just trying to explain why I'm going alone.

not to harp on this point, well ok I'm harping. my reccommendation is to go for the whole week. figure out how to solve your reasons for not going the whole week. i want to make it clear that by all means go for the few days, but really really try and go for the whole time. The early part of the week is by far the best time of the whole week. You will leave having a much different experience then if you just go for th-sun. If the problem is work, assuming that you haven't told them that you are going to burningman tell them you have family obligations and must have the time off. If the problem is school tell your teachers that you will do the homework ahead of time and take any tests ahead of time etc. try you will be happy you did.

Ten points jkisha for not offering advice.

Oh crap, now I'm doing the advice thing.
Sorry

Hi Lefty! Welcome to the online moshpit that we call eplaya. I see you've made friends.leftmespeechless wrote: I guess I have a question for everyone here. If there was one thing that you could change about your first time at Burning Man or do differently, what would that be?

If I was going to do my first burn different, I would read the preparation and survival guide stuff. Bring enough to share. Bring alternate wardrobes. (Last year I wore sandals as part of my costume, developed playa foot and had to switch to sneakers, not really barbaric!)
Ask lots of specific questions! Consider volunteering at a Theme Camp or some other gig. If you have unique talents, make them known and you will find a camp that will appreciate you!
The Burn experience is much more relishable if you make a committment to give of yourself! (And I don't mean that in a necessarily sexual manner at my camp)

I'm truly sorry I didn't mean to be an ass. (Thought it might be an April fools joke)leftmespeechless wrote:Ah, you've misunderstood me! If you're still only going for a few days (I too think you should make it for the whole fest) then make the most of it. Don't make any plans for while you're there. Show up and start to party. Often times the major change in elevation doesn't really effect people tell the third day. So party hard the first two, and wait tell your flight home to be hung over!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

I've never been but am working on going to BM in 2011 So I have no first time words of wisdom. I am also from Houston though and suggest you might want to check out Flipside (regional burn for Texas) too. Though tickets at this point are sold out.
Wish you the best luck and experience!
