Well, I should clarify.........it's hard to judge anyone's participation level or motivation on the playa.....but I am certain you won't have a repeat of that college scene.......if Halloween is your favorite day.....well then it's like 1000 times that.....only different.....

i didn't mean to suggest that you could or should determine participation somehow ... i will be one of the looky-loos myself, i love looking at stuff.

what i meant to say is that by making it difficult, you help preserve it for people who really care about it, because they are the only ones willing to make the effort year after year. hopefully...

The whole event just makes me feel like one big smile addict! I know you'll be prepared well. I loved it all and wish you a happy first burn in 09!

re: age, costume, focus of interest... IMHO, you're in if you say you're in. Look and listen for the messages that you want to hear. Whatever you want is there in abundance. If you are already studying the issue, I think you have a good start. The environment does raise the bar higher for how much does one want to attend, but I think that's great. You gotta wanna! The discomforts, for me, are a small price to pay for such a magnificent experience. Also planning the expedition gear is a big part of the fun for me.

yes! collecting all the stuff - gear, gifts, art, &c - a daunting task indeed. lately i've been trying to think of ways to turn an old pair of glasses into dust-proof goggles ... any ideas? i suspect there are a lot of four and/or six eyed people out there (i have recently become one of the latter...) and playa dust must be hell on contact lenses....

I can only see 4 inches without my contact lenses. But I have extended wear disposables so I just kept them in all week. I suggest you do the same. Of course, bring your glasses in case.

I brought a pair of swim goggles for the dust storms, but for the milder storms my wrap-around shields (sport sunglasses) were fine.

Or try a diving mask - stick your old glasses in them. Keep in mind that in a storm your mask/goggles will be covered in dust so you're not going to see anything clearly anyway.

I used ski goggles and they fit right over my glasses - worked great or as good as it needed to be anyway,..

there are motorcycle goggles designed to fit over prescription glasses. Maximumeyeware.com has a few varieties. If you can be creative with weatherstripping, perhaps you could dustproof some old glasses. There are various densities for varying size gaps. curious to know if it works. A neighbor of mine this year was just using some shop safety goggles, not really windproof, but good enough to keep things sort of clean and she got to keep her glasses on.

I saw someone who used black weather stripping and it actually looked great.
Probably depends on the glasses.
The stuff comes in many grades too.
I think they had a medium grade, not the epdm, but not cheap either.
Sort of a dense foam.

aha ... weatherstripping. i was thinking of using some kind of foam, inside fabric - i have a design in mind, actually - but i will definitely look into weatherstripping. i want something that actually looks good, or at least goes well with my new respirator, which looks stunning. is what i like about BM, you can do whatever the **** you want to! my kinda scene.

and another whopping thank you to everyone's ideas and suggestions, you are all so nice to us poor befuddled virgins! i just wish it wasn't a whole year away.

I am turning 43 and this was my first burn - it was the only thing I could do and it was the best. better than any other mid-life crisis type bullshit.

Age limit from 2 week old infant (or even YOUNGER "Burner In The Oven" belly's) Up to last day on Earth chronological age (which I'd suppose wouldn't be a bad natural passing...minus someone having to (trying not to sound morbid/no pun intended) clean up after me. The body is a vessel, like a bottle. It's what's inside that is the good stuff! :D

I'm 66...

Post by Montino » Tue Sep 09, 2008 11:38 pm

I went with my daughter's group. I was the only sarod player there. Wandered around with my instrument and got treated really well. My group (Thirty-somethings...) would say "Where did you go?" "Where are you going?"
I outlasted them all. They don't make them like they did!
Discomfort? I played right through the dust storm. There's various photos of me wearing whiteface and playing a weird instrument.
My first burn... but not my last!

i intend to match Gizmo and make my virgin burn at age 52 after dreaming of him (literally) for 3-4 years now. that's dreaming of The Man, not Gizmo...

we older farts tend to know the difference between participating and spectating. we hope to demonstrate well our extensive experience in de-evolutionary behavior when placed in adverse conditions.

does sleeping count as de-evolutionary? i intend to prove that a good drug-free snooze is possible at BM, even with all the noise...

it's that or zombiedom. is there a zombie camp?

but waking hours ... i definitely plan to do my best to support and uphold your main point!

For the record, I would like to state (well, brag) that my retirement-age (62yo?) mother was out for her 2nd Burn this year... a week early to set up, no less.

yeah, she's a badass.

Just be warned, if you are in a wheelchair you'll be essentially locked out of most domes.
fishy, if you EVER have any problems getting in/out of our place i will personally be there to assist you..just yell my name real loud, i'll be around.....we are aware of the "bump" because of the frame structure of domes and have tried to make them less obtrusive because of what you mentioned and also people tripping and stubbing their little unprotected toes on the 3" diameter steel struts.

we tried a ramp, but it quickly got trashed, thank you for reminding me though, this year we should dig a trench, 3-4 inches deep around the perimeter and sink the lowest level in to avoid those problems.

and back on subject, i think you'll find that there are ALOT of us "mature" burners out there (i'm using that term literally, as in specific age group, not mind set) im almost 45, going on 12, and it seems to me that it really DOES NOT matter, as far as demographic cliques or bias is concerned.

It's rare, but at BM, The Geezers actually are listened too, and treated with the respect they deserve, and the wisdom they can impart.
