VJ Sound Brew introduces

Post by Peaches 2005 » Mon Aug 01, 2005 9:56 pm

Hi my name is John Brewington, producer of Sound Brew Productions in Los Angeles USA.

All my bio is at http://www.soundbrew.netas well as streaming videos of my art - NOT a commercial site.

I perform original 3D animation graphics that are projected onto large screens and they change shape, size, and color to the music nearby as well as to my controls. The show is very alive and hip to the environment of sounds nearby such as performers or music of all styles.

I'm excited to discover how I could gift my talent and show to the Playa.

Please forward this message to any experienced VJ who could give a professional tip on how to preserve my equipment in the desert for 5 days and still have my show ready and showing for you all untill the last day of the Burn !!

Bye for now, hope to see you in you fab costumes !

Help us Jedi... you're our only hope!

Nice to meet another Reno burner. You are going to absolutely LOVE your first burn! That same magic we felt when we witnessed Lucas's work is being built in large scale for you in the middle of the desert. You will have that jumping in your seat can't sleep feeling all over again! The force flows in Black Rock City.

Hey all. In case you didn't guss, I'm new around here. I've never been to a Burning Man before, but I do plan on going to the 2006 event. I've come here to learn more about the event, and maybe make some connections. I hope my stay will be a pleasant one.

EDIT: Oh, and JediDale, Im also a staff-twirler(sp?). I'm a martial artist. Bo Staff for the win.

Hmm, interesting prospect - decided to go 3 days ago!

Post by Lanstar Zero » Sun Aug 07, 2005 6:03 pm

I meant to post this here 1st, but it ended up in the Q&A forum for some reason.. eh...

Greetings! Burner virgin here, excited and anxious!

Interesting turn of events that have led me to decide going to Burning Man this year at the end of August (if I can get a ticket without any complications).

I have always heard that things just manifest when it comes to going to Burning Man - for example, despite poor planning things "just work out".

Anyway, a friend from out of town was visiting, and she mentioned I should go to Burning Man. My money situation is tight, and the driving thing (from Ohio) felt intimidating, esp. gas costs. My grandmother decides she has enough frequent flyer miles, and donates some to me - enough for a flight to San Fran! :)

So here I am, today, still without a ticket, planning my 1st Burning Man experience. I might or might not meet up with the friend that suggested I go.. either way, I'm flexible -- as in, I would be open to joining a camp, but could be cool without that option..

BTW I'm Aaron, recording engineer and musician, vegetarian cook, and into the healing arts (not excluding a bit of shamanism).

Anyone who feels the urge to offer me a camp invitation and any tips, feel free to do so! But I am also cool "winging it", as "they" say..

Peace

AR

Bitterman here. I was re-bourne on the Playa in 1996. Funny, 'cause I was bourne unto this here 3-d world in 1969. I used to be carefree and whimsical. I used to try and encourage others to "come, come to the desert". I told them Burning Man was the best thing a body could experience.

Now I'm a crusty ol' veteran with 7 burns under my belt and a sour taste in my mouth. I aint got nothin' but scorn for the gawdamned Springbreakers and their camp mates, the Non-responsibilitarians. No sir, I aint no newbie hater. I hate the Mardi-Gras-cracked-out-rave-kid-flat land-suburbunites who come out there expecting a mecca built for them. Expecting to be taken care of and coddled. "Uh, I didn't bring no tent, or food, or water, but I got a 12er of Keystone light and I can take my shirt off bro! Hey where's the nekkid chicks?"

No way! What ever happened to the self reliance? Where have all the ol' burners gone? I've got to say, in the past I've met some of the most beautiful and kind humans I've ever encountered during my life, in Black Rock City. I've treasured every moment and memory. That's why last year burned my ass so much. First of all, we was placed next to date rape camp. Then, I pulled arm loads of trash out of the potties every freakin' time I went to go pee. And worst of all, I watched as the interactive, creative city I grew up in turned into the ever spreading tail gate party and parking lot that Black Rock City was last year. My heart sank and my anger grew furious and red. This year I aint got not expectations and I feel great. I plan on makin' this my best burn ever (besides my virgin burn). If you've read this far, thanks.

Bitterman, if it makes you less bitter, there are also newbies for whom the self-reliance point is a huge issue and who share your attitude to those who have not prepared.
I have always heard that things just manifest when it comes to going to Burning Man - for example, despite poor planning things "just work out".
In my (tiny one-burn) experience, yes, this works out to some extent.

If you, as a newbie, have tried your best to prepare, but have forgotten something essential because you just did not realize, more experienced people will be very helpful and very friendly, gifting not only the use of their <insert the name of the thing you have forgotten> but also tons of valuable advice.

If, however, it is obvious from what you bring - and not! - that you have not read and understood the survival guide and the list of things you must bring, you will meet a lot less friendly community. I saw this happen just outside our neighbourhood - there were a bunch of young people who seemed to have no idea what kind of conditions they were coming to, not even to the extent that was obvious to a complete newbie without any desert experience from just reading the required reading. While some people tried to help them fix their shade and gave them water and whatever they lacked, they were spoken of with contempt and I'm afraid no one really regretted when they left. (I never spoke to them personally, I was too busy coping with my first experiences. :))

So, you can get by with minimal and poor preparation - but if you want to really "get" the experience and meet nice people and be part of the fun, you need to work as best you can for your self-reliance.

Good luck on your preparations, AR, and I hope you have a good burn! What luck with the flights you have already had, let's hope it continues for other things. :)

Bring Your Best! Let "The Force Do The Rest!"

Post by JediDale » Mon Aug 08, 2005 10:31 am

Most of us were taught that the best way to maximize pleasure of any event is to bring a fantastic attitude, think of the best (not expensive) gifts for others, expect NOTHING IN RETURN, and let "The Force Do The Rest!" There are esentially 3 types of people:

The GIVERS - who do the really fantastic things that inspire and/or touch us deeply! Listen without giving advice, enjoy and perhaps even seek out those in genuine need, come from a mindset of "There is enough for all!"
They genuinely care for others. They derive great pleasure from giving pleasure. They want to see you advance and grow as a human.

The NEUTRALS - they just bring enough for themselves, watch others do the work or entertainment, neither contribute or take. They are the kind that would not steal from you, yet they would not have the thought to help some one whom they could easily.

The TAKERS - they never bring enough, supply endless reasons for their lack, expect others to care for them, and want to be entertained. Theirs is the mindset of " There is never enough for me!" Gimme, Gimme, Gimme!!

What this Jedi has learned is that the more I really give of myself to make others happy the more "The Force" amplifies, multiplies and refines
the enjoyment I am capable of receiving! Indeed, it becomes MORE FUN TO GIVE THAN RECEIVE!! Needless to say, a Jedi will never allow someones attempts to deplete him (Or Her.) As I often like to say:

CLASSIFY YOURSELF AT BURNING MAN!!

Questions, Comments, Rants, etc, will be fielded
ASAP!

Genuinely,

Jedi Dale Of Reno

Hey,
The support staff said I should come here. I got 2 tickets to this year's festival, and now can't go due to family illness. I want to know if anyone needs tix. I bought full price tickets, but will let them go for less if anyone wants them. Any suggestions?

Nially, there is a separate part on this board for ticket sales, called 2005 Tickets. You can find it by cliking the big "eplaya" text in the top of the page, then look for "2005 tickets" under "2005 Burning Man event". On the ticket forum, you can find many people looking for tickets, to whom you could sell or gift yours, or you can put up a notice of having some extra ones you are willing to part of.

Too bad you cannot come. Good luck in finding a good home for your tickets, and especially good wishes for the family.

Hi. I live in the San Jose area (los gatos) and am a BM virgin but have dated a severalth timer for years, (only thing he isn't used to prob, is having to bring 2x as much everything) He likes radical left politics and left wing folksingers, I like traditional folksingers, teddy bears (but i don't want to get playa dust in their fur) and sci-fi. Well when the ticket cost $200 i can't say no, can I??? I'm not quite that into mortification of the flesh. BY the end I bet I'd sell myself into slavery to use a shower. I'll have dandruff for sure, I might need laxatives, who knows what. I'm just getting up the courage to go. I haven't even told my family!!!!

Greetings fellow true believers! It is I, Stan Lee here, to help you beware of the Data Raiders. A sinister group of misguided teens looking for kicks. Well... they found 'em alright, in the form of pills with funny sounding names, mostly letters and numbers and stuff. Then a big, rock lookin' guy smashed 'em and stuff. Nuff said. Don't do drugs.

hello burning people!!!

i'm zachary, this year will be my first burn after two failed attempts! i am so anxious to just get going that i've found myself keeping busy organizing impossibly trivial details in preraration for the trip...thus discovering a potentially extremely organized self hidden deep inside me! LET THE SELF REINVENTION AND EXPLORATION OF THE CONSCIOUS AND UNCONSCIOUS BEGIN! can't wait to see and meet the wonderful people who will be there!

ciao for now!

Greetings and salutations! I recently moved from Berkeley to Orange County of all places unlike BRC or Berkeley. It will be my second burn if I end up going this year! I had an incredible and quite unforgetable experience. Met some really, really cool people last year and hope to run into them again this year all while meeting some new cool people.

Anyone going from the OC? I don't know anyone down here so I would love to hear from you!

Hope to run into some of ya' on the playa!

I am Sean 'til Dawn. Burner since 1998.

First, I was a spectator. Then I built a large, mobile, pyramid of porn. For a few years I had a latex vacuum bed. It was mobile also. Now, I just make a comfortable space for any burner to hang out in peace. Last year, I was Kathy Kamp, a camp dedicated to Kathy Lampman who was killed after The Burn in 2003. I never knew or met the woman, but I wanted to make sure that she was remembered. This year, I am The Ammo Dump. See my post in the 2005 Theme Camp area for a small summary. I might bring the vac bead again. A new one.

I do all of this alone. My friends have no interest, no idea what I do there, and have thought I was insane for some time now.

Screw 'em. More for us.

Hi, this is Gabo, journalist and bon vivant. I'm orginally from Mexico but am currently living in San Antonio, Bushcountry  All the more reason to take a break in La Playa. And just to get it out of the way, all your posts will be off the record

I'm a bit of a yoga-freak and seriously into Chai and Ken Wilber, but being a Gemini, a Party Monster also lives within. I recently started eating meat again and well, what can I say, my body is loving it.

This will be my first time in Burning Man but thankfully, my friend J managed to get us into a veteran camp. I'm planning to head to Black Rock on Thursday morning from San Francisco, and am currently looking to share a ride.

Greetings Burners, and soon to be Burners,

Like Petalford, 2005 will be my 3rd burn, and like many others it took several attempts before I actually made it (2 years cuz of work, 1 year for marriage, and 2 years for poverty). During those fails attempts, though, I did help many theme camps build stuff. I'm kinda handy that way, and love to built stuff for any excuse. I had helped with Citrus Camps 2 domes, and Lorax had a grey waste filtration system a few years back.

Well, now that I've been, I consider this my Hajj. Within a couple hours of of being at BRC during my first burn, I was calling BM 'freak Hajj' - affectionately of course. Instead of circling a black rock in the Arab desert, though, we circle a burning man at the Black Rock Desert! Being my Hajj, I now never miss it (although my wife only comes every other year).

In college (UConn), I lived with 3 other Mikes, so nicknames ensued. My prepensity for bong inovation, and being a Physicist, gave me the name 'Gravity Mike.' BTW, the standard gravity bong isn't a bong at all, but is a hydrolic pipe - I was rather dissapointed when introduced to the gravity bong, thus the inventing began. Now, I'm an operational safety officer for a major particle accelerator facility = your government dollars hard at work.

Glad to meet you all. Stop by Citrus Camp at 4:30 and Fetish (in the new experimental theme camp zones away from the Esplanade) any afternoon for a refreshing citrus beverage!!

Hello all, first time burner, longtime fan who hails from San Jose, CA but is temporarily stuck in the culturally devoid, money driven vaccum that is Las Vegas (hmmm...or was that San Jose). Although, where else can one sit down to an all-you-can-eat buffet for $6 within sight of both the "Eiffel Tower" and the "Manhattan" skyline with an Elvis look-alike to obscure your view of each. As for BM, can't sum up just how jazed I am about this opportunity to shed some layers on the playa and learn from you all and to give as much of myself as I can.

hi! i'm julia. yet another first time burner. i have been wanting to go for a zillion years, so i am sooooo happy that it's working out this year.

i'm trying to figure out how to travel self-sufficiently, yet minimally, since i am a rider in another person's vehicle. i've read all the lists of the tons and tons of "must-brings" and am finding it a bit daunting and slightly stressful with only a week left to prepare :(

i can't wait to hit the road. i'm all the way out in virginia (dc metro), so a long road it will be.

allow me one newbie question. i only have one bike and its a nice one (well, $500-range). i'm not super concerned if it gets a little weathered, but of course i'd prefer for to not inadvertantly destroy it. since its my only cycling option, would it be better to leave it and walk everywhere or bring it and risk its loss? what would you do?
