Hello All!

I decided today to commit to BM 2013. This will be my first burn. I'm facing my fears and taking the plunge. My sister in law and her friends have gone the past 3 yrs and I became curious about it last year, but couldn't go because I was 6 months pregnant. I'm excited for the experience and can't wait for my personal journey.

Lots of love.

Within 6 hours of getting to Burning Man I knew I was going to build a mutant vehicle.

Then I hung out for a day with Ian who's crew built Movement of Jah People. I was so inspired by their kindness that I promised Ian I would return next year with a vehicle I had built so we could ride around together. Our crew is well on our way.

Stickshocker, Welcome to the fold. Time is a wastin'. Your first burn is special. Do stop at the greeters station and let us play with you a bit, (and ring the virgin bell).

Hey folks... heard about Burning Man back in college and have always wanted to go. Life got in the way, but after about a decade-plus detour, I've made it back and committed to 2013 being the year I make the trek. Strangely, what prompted me was the "Oh, The Places You'll Go" BM video... a story that was read to me as a child, and I read to my children often.

I'm coming from North Florida (land of no burners) and meeting up with my best friend who's a musician out in LA. At this point, I'm just trying to take it all in and start moving towards preparation. It's coming along. I'm getting into the obsession phase of pre-burn... hoping for a little non-burn productivity between now and then - but if it doesn't happen... fuck it... you're only a birgin once, right?

Hello! My name is Amy and this will be my first burn : ) I have some dear friends who are burners and love it. Hearing their stories and watching them get prepared inspired me to gather the courage and get my ticket! In the middle of all this I just moved from Austin, TX to the Bay Area. I'm an artist who has supporting myself by teaching and I'm taking the plunge by working strictly on my art as my business. It's been quite an adventure already!
I've read the Survival Guide and I'm getting prepared! I'm not much of a camper or use to roughing it but I'm excited for the challenge! I've been combing over the boards looking for advice and valuable information. What a great resource this is!!! I'm looking for a theme camp to join also. I can't wait to meet all of you soon!

Hi Jason! Hi Amy!

More important than being used to roughing it is having a positive attitude, resilience, and preparing with as much ferocity as you can. :D

Thanks Savannah and Ratty! My first realization today (besides "Holy Moly! I've got a lot of gathering to do!") is that my second hand tent isn't going to cut it! I'm going to have to invest in something more appropriate for the environment! : ) Thanks for the encouragement!

Last year I used a tiny dome tent held in place by all the heavy junk inside and an ancient 'family' tent with aluminum poles. The important part is keeping the dust out and rebar with ropes. Anything goes. Read up on tents here and you'll see how over the top burners can get with their equipment.

Hi, I'm Sprocket, and I'm in the Boston area. I'm in need of a camp. The one I was going to be in is not happening, so I need a new place to be.
I've never Burned before, and I'm a wee bit nervous regarding getting the details of everything I will need and how to acquire it. I would really like to find a camp that is doing something cool I can participate in actively. I'm completely fine with doing basic work, but I'd also like to be doing something more front facing. I do improv comedy, and have heard there are camps that run people through games, like noir detective agencies and such. That sounds amazing, I'd I've got experience in creating realities like that for people playing a game, and I'd love to help.

Hey Sprocket!

Have you read the Survival Guide? You've got to anyway, of course, but it's got a starter checklist of stuff to have.

There is a list of registered 2013 Theme Camps here.
http://www.burningman.com/themecamps/th ... ml?yy=2013

You can use the search feature in that link to look for camps using keywords, and email the ones that look like a fit and tell them about yourself and why you like them. Not all of them will be recruiting, but some may be.

I found a camp using "Boston" as a keyword. (Automatic Subconscious.) And I found 20 hits using the word "games"; some of 'em might be of interest.

And there is also the 2013 Theme Camps forum:
http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewforum.php?f=323

Welcome sprocket!! Get as prepared as you can for the weather and the fun. Keep as open minded as possible on your search. You may end up working in a costume dome or serving meals at a free cafe. Anything can happen.

Hello everyone! I've never been to a burn and I hope to make 2014 my first. I've had an idea of what BM is for as long as I can remember, but it's only been the past year or so that I've caught the bug and decided that this is something I NEED to experience (the good and the bad. I have no delusions of grandeur).

I've been devouring the main website as well as eplaya, so hopefully I can avoid most of the neewbie mistakes (both on eplaya and the real playa).

I finally decided to "take the plunge" and sign up here because I do have some questions (and I'm sure I'll have more as next year's event gets closer). However, I do promise to search the main site and the boards for answers first before subjecting you all to any stupid newbie questions. :D

My only issue right now is that I have my husband about 85% convinced to go with me. I'm hoping that with all I have learned and will learn through all of the experienced and even not-so-experienced folks here, I'll be able to get him the rest of the way by next year!

ETA: We live about 2,000 miles away from BRC, but plan to possibly incorporate this into a cross-country trip that Mr. Ishacabibble has been talking about for a few years. And although I don't think we'd join a theme camp, we are both experienced in the construction trades and both own steel-toed boots and tools and we both love to help!

Welcomeish, (Little joke there). Hey. Really welcome.. If your hubby doesn't want to come don't make him. Mine has never gone and never will. Fine with me. You'll never be alone unless you want to be. If you do things by yourself in daily life, you'll be fine camping without him. And you WILL have fun.

Thanks Ratty! I personally have no qualms about going by myself and perhaps joining an orphans camp or something. However, my husband has some preconceived notions about BM and seems to think that I want to go do a bunch of illegal drugs (I've never done that and am way too paranoid of getting caught to do it) or would want to have sex with random strangers (ummm... no).

I'm hoping that by directing him to the main site and especially eplaya he'll see that that is not what BM is all about and that you can experience it any way you want. Plus, I would just really like to experience something this significant with him since we've already experienced a lot together.

Welcome, Ishcabibble! :D

People who have to be convinced more than a little bit sometimes have a terrible time out there . . . but you have a little while to decide. Lots of people burn with friends/acquaintances/camps or solo, instead of partners.

The fact that you're both in construction is great; builder/engineer types have a field day out there. :)

Thanks Savannah! At some point I was thinking about starting a thread asking for experiences from burners who brought people who might be a bit less than 100% gung ho about BM. I really think my hubby would enjoy himself, especially since he's been getting into our local art scene for the last couple of years, he loves camping, and he loves building things and helping others. I just have to convince him that BM isn't a dirty hippie-fest where everyone is high all the time having sex with everyone else all over the place.

I probably won't post too much more until this year's burn is over, though.
