Ike-troduction; Sophomore burn in 2008, Blue and from Boston

Post by ike » Fri Aug 15, 2008 4:32 pm

Hi all,

I've started posting hither and thither on eplaya so I figured I'd chime in with an introduction too. I'm Ike. I'm based out of the Boston area, and most fortunate to know a good bunch of other burners to coordinate and camp with. I'm fixated on the color Blue, I love Disco music (but I dance and get down to house and just about anything else heard on the playa), I'm into materials science and engineering, and I like safety equipment and using it properly to mitigate the risks of dangerous activities. Yeah, I'm a nerd, geek, and a dork, and rather verbose when I don't check myself. :)

2008 will be my second burn; after 2007, I couldn't imagine not coming back again for 2008. If there's any evidence needed that it's my "wise fool" year it's that I'm working the build crew for an art installation (The Sapphire Portal) and then planning six events (relatively low key, fortunately) during the week.

Last year, among everything, I enjoyed the sunrises, the sunsets, the sunshine, the night time, the Black Rock Roller Disco, the Sapphire Portal, miscellaneous dance parties around the city, Bootie BRC, bicycling around the playa, the art, The Man, the Thunderdome, Dance Dance Immolation, Club Verboten, the characters, the creations, the fire, the costumes, the Burns, the double rainbow... and I could go on, of course.

I'm looking forward to more of some of the same and lots of different things this year. I'm also hoping that if I apply enough saline nasal spray, I'll avoid getting nosebleeds from the dust storms.

See you all on the playa. I'll be wearing all royal blue almost all of the time, but might occasionally deviate to navy blues, grey blues, or light blues if I'm especially cold or I'm giving my royal blue outfits a rest. I'm not to be confused with the naked guy dancing on the playa with the two blue umbrellas, but I respect what he does. :)

-Ike

That saline nose spray is amazing. If you forget or run out, you can always pour a little water in the palm of your hand and snort it. Inelegant, but better than "nose taters."

I dunno, for me it's not so much the nose tater or their nose gremlin farmer overlords that bother me. It's the uh, um, nose shoggoths, er, which tend to slither down the back of my nasal passages after I've conquered a nosebleed.

But yeah, I'll have plenty of nasal spray this year, as I did last year. This year I'll just use it a lot more often.

Whoops, I didn't use enough. My nosebleed count for 2008 was something like 7 or 8? I don't know, it was too many. I think I need a nasal spray alarm or something. Anyway, the rest of my Burn was fantastic, and I'm already thinking about next year!

I used the spray twice without any problems. I do try and make it part of my normal hygene practice: brush, floss, spray as it were.

Lucid484: I fly into Reno and arrange rides with camp-mates or random strangers on the internet! This year I rode in with a veteran burner from Vancouver, BC, Canada who was driving a propane-fueled Winnebago. It was awesome. Other Boston folks do the same kind of thing but fly into San Francisco.

Driving from Western MA is probably not unreasonable; you may want to consider looking into hooking up with the Boston Burners
http://bostonburners.org/

and their BurningTruck
http://burningtruck.chaoshacker.org/

if you would rather drive the bulk of your gear to Boston than all the way from MA to NV.

HMMM thanks ike that thruck seems interesting...it would be a good way to transport my bike and some gear. I added up the costs and for me to take a flight to reno rent a car and fly back home it cost just over $500.....if i drive the whole way it will cost my car almost $1100

Use the trip to see things on the way.

Logistics can be a pain flying, and I imagine a driving-cross-country trip would be really awesome, as I've heard from many friends that it is. However, if time is a constraint, flying is certainly doable.

We are from Gloucester, 35 miles North of Boston. We flew to Las Vegas and picked up our camper there. Drove to BRC. It was beautiful.

As for the Nose Schnoogs, we brought our neti pot and rinsed at least twice a day, ahhhhhh, it was great!!!

Also as an intro, HI I'm Moesy a virgin in 08. It was wonderful to get "Home" to BRC and I look forward to all the years to come. We've decided that we vacation in Massachusetts and "live" in Black Rock City!!
