Welcome Corey/Baz - I'm pretty sure that you are going to be fine until you meet up with your first dust storm. There are some things in life that while most exciting when they happen, don't necessarily need to be rushed!! ;)

That being said, be wise and print out the Survival Guide, read, read it, read it again, read it after you read it again..... You get the idea. Prepared is the best way to go to the Burn, first time and every time!

Hey Corey, welcome!

I'm a fellow Burning Man "virgin"...but the people here are awesome...best thing to do is to start reading the stuff on the BM website and contact the regional people if you can...

I think the best way to know what to expect is to have no expectations : )

Be heavy on the preparation, and light on the expectation. :)
Heavy on preparations, light on expectations.

Unexpect the expected.

Seriously, we all know to expect the unexpected but then we are still expecting.

Expect Nothing.
Prepare for Everything.

Emergen-C's (fizzy vitamin c packets)

--These saved my friggin life out there. When you need that energy, it'll be there. Plus, its good for you!

Bandannas (For the dust :))

An Open Mind
--Duh, right?

Oh, and lose the fear of being lost. The best way to know where you're going is to not know where you're goin! Have fun!

I never get lost, people seem to tell me where to go!!

Emergen-C is awesome, we had that with us and even mixed several packs right into our gallon of water that we carried with us each day.

We got some surgical masks at our local drugstore before we left for "home" and wore goggles during dust storms, worked out great!

Burly man is right! Expect nothing, prepare for everything and you will not be surprised!

As jkisha was kind enough to point out I probably should not introduce myself in someone's thread.

Anyway have my own now. Thanks jkisha.

I'm more then willing to cast my inhibitions aside (For once in my life) and go with the flow. What I am wondering though is whether given my military service I'll be made to feel unwelcome by what I am sure is a crowd with a very different world view then what I represent (Although no longer embrace).
Hey moinnva, welcome to eplaya! You should start a welcome thread of your own so you can get a proper welcome!

I'm a Vietnam Vet. I'm sure there are lots of other x-military and probably some on active duty even. (don't know that for a fact, but our crowd is so diverst it wouldn't surprise me.)

How would anyone even know you were in the military while on the playa? Are you stuck in your uniform? Wouldn't much matter anyway, everyone there would think you were in a costume.

And there is nothing wrong with being in the military you guys/gals perform an important service to our country and you should be proud. We're proud of you.

So cast your inhibitions to the wind, come to burning man and have a great time. Welcome Home.

Welcome bazgate :D ! You say you can't wait for your first dust storm, eh? Don't worry...there will be dust  Once you go through your first really bad one, you wear it like a tattoo (temporary, of course) on which to base a standard on---"Man, this storm aint' nothing! I remember the one on Wednesday in 04' and the bottle of Vodka that..." Start prepping now...you won't regret it!
