BRC Virgins! Anxious yet happily thrilled!

Post by Sheiladyche » Tue Dec 02, 2008 5:17 pm

For many years I have wanted nothing more then to experience my first Burning Man adventure. And this is the year!!!

My sister and I will be joining some BRC veterans, they know the ropes, but I am still in the dark about lots of stuff. The community of Burning Man can be intimidating to new comers, with all the lingo, verbiage,and temporary change of lifestyle while on the playa, one can get confused.

We have been doing our homework, and are beyond excited about our trip! Any advice or need to knowledge would be much appreciated. :wink:

see you in the desert!

Love and Light~ Sheila

Hey Sheila, welcome to eplaya!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Santa Rosa, we lived off the Russian River in Monte Rio and other places.. loved it. Since you mention verbiage... here ya go.. and welcome!
Words that begin with a consonant
Transfer preceding consonant(s) from the word to at the end. Add "-ay" to the end of the word.

Paint the fence white = aintPay ethay encefay itewhay
Don't slump = on'tDay umpslay
My dog = yMay (pronounced eye-may) ogday

Words that begin with a vowel and one-syllabled
Add "-lay" to the end of the word that start with a vowel, and leave the first letter in front.

it = itlay
arm = armlay
egg = egglay

Others
Multi-syllabic words that start with vowels often are the same as words that start with a consonant.

isthmus = isthmuslay
ingenious - sngeniouilay
archery = yrcheralay
ending = endinglay
ultimate = ultimatelay
Compound words work better when you split them into separate words.

bedroom = edbay oomray
toothbrush = oothtay ushbray
wallpaper = allway aperpay
bathtub = athbay ubtay
hi = ihay
i rock = ilay ockray
soccer = occersay

[edit] More ExamplesI am speaking Pig Latin! = Ilay amway eakingspay igpay atinLay!
Can anyone hear me? = Ancay anylay onelay earhay emay?
I have a secret = Ilay avehay alay ecretsay.
The guy next to me has toilet paper stuck to his shoe = Ethay gayuy
extnay otay emay ashay oilettay aperpay uckstay otay ishay oeshay.
Are these really all the rules? There may be some missing. = Arelay esethay eallyray alllay ethay ulesray? Erethay aymay ebay omesay issingmay.
Has anybody seen my washboard? = ashay anylay onelay eensa ymay ashwa oardba?
Hi people! Whats up? = ihay eoplepay hatsway uplay?
I love you= Ilay ovelay ouyay
New England Patriots rule = ewnay englanday atriotspay uleray
Pig Latin is really easy to speak and understand once you get the hang of it!- igpay atinlay isly eallyray easylay otay eakspay andlay underlay anndstay oncelay ouyay etgay hetay anghay oflay itlay!
You= ouyay
Hello= ellohyay
yes=esyay

[edit] TipsAt first, speak slowly so you can correct your mistakes. As time goes on, you'll be able to pick up some speed.
There's a definite rhythm and flow to the sounds - often it takes some experimentation to get it smooth.
Some people put dashes in front of the suffix. E.g., ome-say eople-pay ut-pay ashes-day in-way ont-fray of-way e-thay uffix-say.
Be careful. You could be near people who know a different version or who think you are insulting them when you're not.
Once you know how to speak it fluently, don't speak too fast to people who don't know it/can't speak it fast yet. Odds are if you can't say it fast, you can't understand it fast.
Another version uses "aig" before every vowel. Example: bottle is baigottaigle (pronounced bay-got-ay-gul). This is harder for others to catch on, and is more similar to a variation of Gibberish.

Welcome,

My advice, read the Preparation section of the BM site about 20 times. Accept that at some point things will go horribly wrong. If you have already accepted it, you'll have an easier time taking care of it.

Unexpect the expected!

Sheila, for many years I have wanted nothing more then to experience some time alone with you and your sister. Oh damn, I’m sorry for saying that. How rude that was of me. Please forgive me. I have been reading and admiring the works of Simon of the Playa too much. Welcome! You will enjoy your time at the burn. Just remember to choose your pill(s) carefully.
