Virgin may have found what she needs.
Hey everyone. I'm considering going to Burning Man 2009. I've been looking for a change for far too long and when I friend told me to check this out, it seemed perfect. I'm from the Central Valley in CA and will probably will be going with a friend and his mom. I get the "bring goggles, masks, and water" thing. Any other advice? I'm really curious about what actually goes on at Burning Man.

Hey there! Welcome to eplaya! Best advice you will get on here is to read the Survival Guide several times and to connect with other burners in your area who can offer their guidance. Be wary of having enormous expectations of a life changing experience. The more you unexpect the expected, the more likely you are to get something from Burning Man. Above all, be willing and prepared to participate!
See you in the dust!
See you in the dust!
A plan is what you vary from.
Destiny Lounge 3D will be at Bradbury and 3:15 this year as a part of the 404: Village Not Found group of camps! Come see us!

Welcome AB
I'm a virgin myself and have also been looking for.....something.
I try to spend most of my energy on the logistics. I still let my mind wonder about how awesome it will be, though.
I guess we both just have to show up. I think that might be the only way to really "get it."
I like the videos on this site though. It looks like it really catches the vibe.

We were virgins last year, and your post reminds me of our first post on ePlaya... oh, how the planning for the event changes after your first time...
- Read the Survival Guide
- Just imagine having no responsiblities while you're out there (unless you're part of a theme camp that requires your presence or labor) outside of having fun, meeting people, getting enough water and food in your belly, someplace to sleep, and *this is the most important suggestion* - don't come with ANY expectations! Nothing you plan will happen like you think, and the true enjoyment about Burning Man is that there are 50,000 other people with no real plan, and not having a plan allows the most amazing, unexpected times to find you...
BTW, we're in Bakersfield

Ah! Yes! Someone close by. I was hoping I would find someone. I don't really have expectations. I'm just looking forward to getting away. So, the survival guide is slowly becoming second nature. My only question is what are the camps like? Like, does anyone actually sleep?

Well, you may or may not "get it" completely. But you will be on your way towards that goalFrostyMan wrote:I guess we both just have to show up. I think that might be the only way to really "get it."
The videos are good, the pics are good, the words are good. But it isn't until you get out onto the playa that you figure out you couldnt fully realize just what the fuck its really like. Theres gonna be alot of WTF moments, and your also gonna come away with so many changes and ideas for the next year, and beyond, that your brain begins to melt from overload.
Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Of course. Black Rock City has different kinds of neighborhoods, just like any other city. The loudest music is concentrated near 2 Street & 10 Street, and on the inner streets (A, B...). If you camp away from those areas, you have a better chance of sleeping well.anorexicbitch wrote:Like, does anyone actually sleep?
I get the impression you believe that everyone lives in established camps. Not so. You can camp by yourself in any available space that is not dedicated to Theme Camps or otherwise reserved.
Daytime heat can be a problem for the many who sleep in after staying out much of the night. Double shade over your tent really helps.

AB, if you can hook up with other peeps who have already been, ply them with tasty adult beverages, they may gladly give up little pearls of wisdom.

Actually, that is a bit of a problem. As you may have guessed from my name, I don't eat much normally. But I'm going with a friend and his mom and they said they would help out with food this time.goathead wrote: What where you planning on eating while you where on the Playa for a week?
Trail Mix?

You might as well get use to eating. We eat better out on the Playa then we do at home.anorexicbitch wrote: Actually, that is a bit of a problem. It is hard to know what you will have a taste for out there though.
Spoil yourself.

I have seen 2 stores that sell pre-cooked bacon. Walmart has it and the package says it doesn't need refridgerating until after opened. Costco has a much larger package (who wouldn't want a larger package?) that does require refridgerating. Both look really good with all the fat cooked off of them. Now I just need to see what kind of creative meals I can make with bacon.anorexicbitch wrote:Okay, how exactly do you do bacon out there? Pre-cooking it would make it get all gross wouldn't it?
Attention moderator: Please don't delete my post because I mentioned stores by name. Bacon is an imperative item for burners and we all need to know the latest developments with this special playa staple!
Anything sealed and irradiated with gamma rays does not need refrigeration.
I used to see steaks like this at krogers.
Works for milk too.
Perfect for camping.
I'm having trouble finding them now, but they are out there.
It's very popular in countries with less refrigeration.
You can do this yourself, if you have the right bag of tricks.
Considerable caution is advised however.
