Heyo

Post by esper » Fri Jan 09, 2009 4:23 pm

Another newbie here. Coming by to say hello, introduce myself and let you know a little about myself.

I've been doing pagan events and primitive camping for a number of years but those kinda went by the wayside. Not the paganism, just the people hosting the event.

I can't really describe myself cause that would take too long to write it all out. Needless to say I have a lot of hobbies.

I'm from MI and thinking of taking 2+ weeks off to drive both ways to BM09. Gonna go check out the other forums and look for people possibly looking to carpool and such.

Well that's all for now I guess unless someone has something they wanna know.

btw, I've read pretty much all the first timer stuff and it doesn't really look like anything new to me so I think this is gonna be a hell of a blast and good time (fun wise and spiritually).

Look forward to meeting you all.

Paul.

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Welcome.

One cautionary tale ... we had an experienced rendezvous camper join us at a regional one year. She was the worst playa camper ever ... all her training had been in forested or brushy areas where you could build a fire, bury trash and dig holes. Nope, not on a playa. And while we love to share and gift, we don't love it when a person is unwilling to learn about the new environment and ends up pissing off the host camp repeatedly.

Not saying that will happen with you, just be aware that primitive camping and playa camping are two different beasts. Don't be afraid to learn new things.

Esper, welcome to eplaya from a fellow Michigander. Where bouts you located? The Michigan BM (now ygmir, that as well sounds wrong  ) group has 2 yahoo sites, let me know if you need links. Are you also familiar with our upcoming regional at the end of June over by South Haven? Called Lakes of Fire and I can get you info on that as well. I drive to the burn, always up for a road-servant, uh, I mean ride share, yeah, thats it

Theres also a western Mich. contingent outta the Zoo area, robotland is the HMFIC for that group, you'll find him around eplaya as well, at least when he's not tinkering with all things metal :D

There are freq. get togethers in the metro D area, sometimes formally planned like meet-n-greets, sometimes informal, like a good excuse to enjoy friends and beverages inside.

I do mainly primitive, or rustic camping, alot of it here in Mich. It is nothing like the burn!!

Here we have vegetation, at the burn you eat any vegetation.
Here we have lakes and rivers for water, at the burn you truck it in.
Here we have a nice summer breeze, at the burn you have duststorms.
Get the picture? :P

BTW, start working on your mitten and fish, be creative.
PM me for anything you wish to know if desired.

Hurry up, times a wasting :D
Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

Sheesh, you guys make the playa sound like it's the harshest place you ever camped in!

It's quite pleasant when there has been a wet winter and we don't get too much heat and wind, like 2006.
I think the humidity was all the way up to 10% or 20% that year.
Nicer than home.

Hmmm, harshest place would have to Hawaii Volcano Park, not so much for the actual harshness, more so for the image it brings to mind :D

Overall harsh camping memories has to be the Boy Scouts. I used to use my Dads old Navy Reserve tent. Leaked like a seive, heavy as shit, nothing like what we have today. We were out winter camping under a tarp one weekend, because the tent refused to be set-up in the snow, when we got over a foot of snow the first night. My bud was at the end of the tarp half in and half out. He had his mummy bag all zipped up and was covered in snow. After digging him out, he found that the zipper was frozen shut. He was begging us for a knife to cut him out as he had to pee  but we made him prolong the agony and slowly thawed him out with those firestick type handwarmers. On another trip to Mackinaw Island we found a sm grass snake and put it in his bag, at the foot end and folded over the top, putting his pillow on that part. When he climbed into the bag later that night, too the accompaniment of much snickering, it only took a few seconds before he started screaming his ass off and struggling to get out of the bag. As he was on the top bunk, he literally fell to the floor when he made it out. After over 30 yrs, that story still makes me LMAO :D I wonder if poor Jeffey has ever been camping since.....

Anyway Gyre, just trying to make sure Esper knows whats up with camping at the burn, and that it is different from here in the land of Gitchi Gumee.... :)

Differences

Post by esper » Sun Jan 11, 2009 1:41 pm

Yeah, I'm getting a pretty good idea of the differences.

In a nutshell (and it's likely to have some revision sometime) is to camp from my Caliber with a silver tarp for shade. I plan on using mounting points on the frame of the car and PVC to make the tarp shade. The seats all fold down to make the inside of the car "flat" to lay down a sleeping bag or other blankets for comfort. Laying down a tarp inside so that any dust/dirt that gets gathered can be just brushed away before leaving.

I'm hoping to use zeer pots to evaporate my gray water and some plumbing with a fan/radiator to cool off the car or some other sitting area next to the car.

I have other ideas as well, but need to test and solidify the rest of them.

I live in Farmington Hills btw. I know there's other stuff but I'd like to for the full effect if you will. ;)

Just bear in mind that anything flapping against the car will cause wear.

Sail Man, if you go fishing and want to have some fun, next time when the right person goes to sleep, set all the clocks and watches ahead.
Then everyone wakes up and goes fishing.
Panic begins to set in as the sun fails to appear.
Keep reassuring them that they are wrong about any problem.
