Goddess attending her first year on the playa...

Post by Goddess_Lisa » Wed Apr 22, 2009 10:44 am

I reign in southeast Reno where I live with my soul mate and our 1-year old son (they won't be attending, just me). After a whirlwind of life changing chaos in my five years in Nevada, I am looking forward to a week of reflection, creativity, tolerance, openness, mindfulness, and whatever may come. I have no expectations; I come with my soul open.

I am also submitting an art installation, which is my first art project of any kind.

Welcome Lisa, and kudos on the First-Time-Anything Art Installation! Can you tell a bit of what it's about or is it secret until playa-time?

Thank you. A few weeks ago in the sleep/awake state on a lazy Sunday morning - I envisioned her and knew that her voice needed to be created. Basically, my installation piece is based on my signature here on eplaya. Please come by and see it ... she is Mother Earth.

Happy Earth Day and good night…

PS: This request may sound ridiculous, but does anyone know where I might be able to get ‘clean’ soil – no chemicals or dung of any kind?

WRONG! WRONG! WRONG, WRONG and WRONG!

it's all about leather bikinis and thigh high boots and rob-zombie girl hair extensions and topless poi spinning while the BLM films you with infra-red cameras so they can jack off to it later in the week.

oh yeah, and getting so drunk you actually piss everclear.

Newbs.....i swear to god, where are they getting them from these days....

When you come back from the playa, it will be everywhere, in your socks, your sleeping bag, your toothpaste tube, and I daresay even your shorts. So you might get some good dirt from the playa if you're into it.

Wait... do you want clean soil to bring to the playa? Because this is not such a good idea. You can't leave it there, you must take every speck back out with you. Will there be plants involved? Water? Mud? Your vision may not be allowed..... details please, so we may guide you with tenderness and snark.

It is soil to make earthen plaster that will harden to my sculpture.
No speck will be left. I've read the rules and researched what exactly it will take to keep it whole (even in wind and rain)… I live in Nevada and am active in organizations such as the Nevada Wilderness Project. Trust me; I do not want to leave any trace. This is my home and I absolutely worship this beautiful country.

Thus said, I totally appreciate the concern.

The reason for "clean" soil is that I want to make sure it is completely and safely compostable when I return home.

Seriously, consider using the dust from the playa as your medium, even if you are building it at home.
Many constructions in the past have used this to good effect.

It has been suggested and would be considered... anyone have a good earthen plaster recipe using playa "dust, dirt, mud" ... of course without leaving a trace...

Playa has an amazingly claylike texture when mixed just with water - stickier than regular clay and at the same time, VERY slippery where overwet.

I have made small sculptures from playa dust for gifting.

You have to use a lot of binder in the mix as, once dry, it would be very, very fragile otherwise. I have used white glue or a similar binder. Paper mache flour glue does not work as it tends over time to turn back into powder just like playa does.

I would LOVE to bring a kick wheel to the playa and play with playa mud.
