Hi Everybody, former hitch-hiker jumping back into the fold

Post by WanderMan » Thu Apr 23, 2009 10:15 pm

Hi there guys! I'm coming to burning man for the first time. It's something I wanted to do for years.

When I was 18, 19 and 20 I had some pretty good adventures,
I hitch-hiked and couchsurfed across America a few times, and also Europe, I wrote and played the saxophone as I went. But then, sadly, I let myself get domesticated, I went to college and had less adventures. Now college is over and it's time for me to get back doing what I love. Travel.

I'm going to hitchhike to burning man and then hitch-hike from burning man. I'm planing to criss cross the west coast and spend at least a few months on the road before I come back down, maybe more. So really, Burning Man is the center of a larger quest I'll be on to sort of reclaim control of my identity (haha, I know that sounds a bit melodramatic) . Should be fun :-)

The way I see it, the so called "normal" world, is where people work jobs they hate, in order to buy things they don't need. It is an insane place, but sometimes it can be hard to escape from if we get too used to it. When we leave their rules behind and do what makes us happy, we escape into sanity. I'm looking forward to spending time with the free and creative people at burning man. I also hope to hook up with some like minded people who might want to hitch cross country together after burning man is done.

Welcome, Wanderman !!!

Now that you are an educated, professional hitch-hiker,
does that mean that you will travel south in the winter
and roam northward in the summertime,
or would that make you just "one of the flock?".

Ugly Dougly,

I've played the saxophone since 6th grade. I love it more than I will ever love a woman, lol.

I just learned the guitar this year, and I sing a little.

Do you play? We should jam in Nevada

haha, My current plan is to do a loop in the South West Through San Francisco, LA, UC Berkley, San Diego, Houghston, New Orleans and possibly Miami. I want to check out lots of different cities to decide where I want to live, because it sure isn't Michigan (where I am now).

I call it "the Warm Cities Tour." I am most interested in San Diego, although I've never been.

Welcome to eplaya!

2 bits of advice:
1) make sure that the boxes below where you're posting are all unchecked. In particular "disable bbcode in this post". That's why the quotes show up weird in your last post. You can also change this to your default settings in your "profile".

2) check out the Michigan regional event coming up:

Da Mule,

Thanks and Thanks! I was wondering how to fix that box thing, and that event in SW Michigan looks SOOOOOOO amazing. I think it's less than 30 minutes drive from where I am now.

Geetings from Kalamazoo, WanderMan, and welcome to eplaya. Hope that you can make it to Lakes of Fire. In your wanderings you might want to visit Northern California (north of S.F.). It's beautiful up there and still very hitch friendly. Went a year and a half hitching up there no problem.

My favorite place in town is the Strutt, and I am extending an open invitation for you to come grab a drink on open mike night, Wednesday.

Oh Dougly, do you live near SD? I'd love to hear about it. The main draw for me is that it's supposed to have the best weather in America.

Dougly, thanks for the info! I actually like the city setting very much so being crowded is not a problem for me, so long as the city is well planned and managed. Big cities always have something fun to do.

Are there any good hippie communities like Co-Op housing projects or things like that in SD? Where are the good, but reasonably priced places to live? I have been told Ocean Beach is nice.

Is there are a subway system? Is it good? Does it run from downtown to Ocean Beach? Are there traffic jams and congestion on the roads?

Is there sprawl?
Is crime a problem?
Is there much pollution?
How are the police?
How are the parties?

Haha. I'm just overflowing with questions! :-)

Subway? In San Diego? You've got to be kidding. LA is just getting one and Sacramento's light rail is still being built. I don't know when they'd get to San Diego. And expect all public transit to take a hit with the recession. Except for the ARRA funds that might build some up.

I'm living in San Diego right now...it's nice, but I was raised in the foothills, so it's not quite my cup of tea. Too much urban sprawl, and the humidity can be annoying. I think that I would enjoy it much more if I was simply visiting.

That being said, there ARE some really cool places. If you're looking for Co-ops, check out North Park, the section of the city basically devoted to thrift shops and cafes. Ocean Beach is fucking awesome as well, but I don't know about any co-op/communes there. I'll ask around - they should be there somewhere. I lived on a vegan commune in North Park over the summer (my roommate and I would sneak out to get donuts), and it was a great experience. Most of the organized co-ops that I know of aren't hippie-oriented, though. There's the Bike Kitchen, the Freeschool, the Garden Co-op...lots of cool folks and good times. They know good beer and throw good parties, too. Mmm...kegs of Arrogant Bastard smoked porter. Ugly Dougly should be able to vouch for the quality of Arrogant Bastard, as it is brewed locally and seems to be THE beer of San Diego.

Unfortunately transportation is not S.D.'s particular strength. There is no subway, the public transit system is pretty bad, and San Diego drivers are absolutely terrible. Sorry Dougly, but it's true. I estimate that I almost die about once every five miles on my bicycle, and a lot of drivers ACTUALLY think that bikes are supposed to be ridden on the sidewalk. If you need to get anywhere when you're here, though, check out sdcommute.com. They have all of the information on San Diego bus routes as well as a trip planner to figure out how to get from one place to another.

Piece of advice for hitchhiking, too. Never accept a ride unless you know that your drop-off point isn't a place where you'll get stuck, and trust me, there are a LOT of places in SoCal that aren't hitcher-friendly. For example: Orange County. Fuck that place. Not only will they refuse to give you a ride, they seem to feel the need to emphasize this by screaming obscenities and telling you to get a job while they drive past in their white Lexus. That was the single most depressing hitchhiking experience I have ever had, though I have hitched all around San Diego without any problems and met some really great folks. A trio of Mexican businessmen once helped me chase down a bus.

Like I said, there is sprawl. I have never had an issue with crime. Pollution isn't that bad thanks to the sea breeze. The police are absolute dickwads. Seriously, the meanest group of cops I've ever come across. The parties...well, I don't know how to generalize something so specific to a city of over a million people. Obviously there will be good parties SOMEWHERE - it all depends on who you end up hanging out with. See my comment above on the Co-ops.

Feel free to give a holler if you have any other questions. And I would have to agree with SilverOrange. DEFINITELY check out Northern California while you're over here. The giant sequoias are spectacular, Yosemite will absolutely blow your mind, and the northern coast has views that I didn't think existed. Just north of Elk is a Druid graveyard right on top of a sea cliff that is surreal.

I've heard of subways in San Diego, they go straight to Mexico and you have to walk.

Don't forget about Blacks Beach.. 10,000 nude people, at least it used to be.

I lived in Ramona for a year. Samagatuma anyone?

You've gotta be kiddiing me! I just spent the last ten years living twenty miles north of Elk and I never heard about this. What a bummer.

WanderMan, San Diego is a cool place to live. I spent ten years between Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, and Mission Beach. The public transportation system really sucks, on the bright side you can pretty much ride your bike every day of the year. Sounds like you would probably enjoy Ocean Beach. It's a pretty laid back community, although it's gotten a lot more expensive there in the last ten years and a little less hippy and a little more tweeker.
Count me in for Wednesday night. I'll try to get robotland AKA Planet Steve to come out as well. He's the regional something or other and just an all around cool guy you should meet. A fount of information and a damn good artist to boot.

Haha, yeah I've had people yell "get a job" a lot too. What I usually do is just smile and yell back "get a life!" If I can get it said before they drive out of earshot, it usually lightens the mood. :-)

Thanks for all the great info on San Diego, I'll definitely write you with some more questions.

Also, you guys are right about North California, I've always wanted to see the redwood forest. I am adding that to my list!
