18 year old newbies

Post by jmg » Tue Jun 09, 2009 11:58 am

Hi everyone - my 18 yr old daughter and her friend are coming this year (it will be my 5th). Over the years I've met people of every age group except late teens - does anyone know people around this age they could connect with? Thanks a lot!

They should be able to connect with people of all ages out there, , once you are covered in dust, we all look fifty.

...........except for Oldguy, Mozy and Ygmir, that is.

You might try Kidsville. I understand it's geared to younger children, but some families continue to camp there as they get older. I do know of one person on this board who's son was there. I don't know his age though. She's too young to have one that age anyway. I know AntiM has taken nieces and nephews, but I haven't heard that she's got one lined up for this year.

Philosophically speaking, I do think that we diminish ourselves in this country with our age segregation; but even I don't find that responsive.

Rambling story: My nieces and nephews have all grown up; there's only two I'd consider allowing back into camp anyway. They seemed to make friends on their own, although we did have to head off one very dirty old man. Niece had been at a camp similar to Costco soulmate and wrote a very innocent request for a playa pal to hang out with and maybe cuddle. Also posted a picture, she's quite buxom. Just by coincidence, the guy (our age) who'd picked up her profile was talking to us at our volunteer stint. He was very excited about the young girl he was going to meet later, and hook up with. He found out we were in Hushville and from Utah, so he started asking ... about our Catholic schoolgirl, literally virgin, niece. Not on our watch! He said, "She knew what she was writing." We replied, "No, she meant a pal her age, not a fuck buddy as old as her dad." He insisted he was right, and that's when Uncle Larry took him aside for a few friendly words and threats of bodily harm. He never did show up in Hushville. And yes, she was mortified that her words had been taken that way.

Most of the time I simply turned them loose. I'm not a nanny, even if I do play on on eplaya.

i like the way yourLarry does things.

if it was my daughters, or my nieces, i would have done the same...

i highly recommend that ALL burners be aware that there ARE predatory types everywhere, and just because they're smiling and gifting and seem groovy enough doesn't mean they're not out to slip you gbh or some other date rape drug and have monkey sex with your belly button.

they are, and they will.

so for all of you parents, and other guardians out there, think about when you were 17, 18 and full of gumption and wonder and having no fear, and what kind of trouble that got you into.

multiply that by 10 at night on the playa.

so i suggest a healthy dose of fear before attending, then you'll be able to spot better the dirty old sex fiends who think that BM is a happy hunting grounds for their "barely legal" fetishes.

Bears repeating in my view.

I work with the Bureau of Erotic Discourse who work to educate participants on the dangers and on how to express limits. It's been eye-opening. Don't get all happy on some sort of love groove. Back in the 60s people got taken advantage of there, and what do you know, it happens now. And it's ugly.

I no lnoger have any idea what sort of survival skills girls of that age have, and of course it varies. But I hope they know that they can walk away (I'd say "always walk away" but I'm not sure of that) and that most people in Black Rock City would be happy to become an honorary uncle by beating up scumbags. Although, Rangers are good people to tell. They will throw people off playa if charges are pressed.
Oh, and make sure that they carry their own cups and that the cups have lids. Roofies happen. Don't make it easy. "Sippy cups" for toddlers are a popular choice, but any "go-cup" will work.

I brought my kids last year,12 and 16. No problems with pervs, just lots of laughs and smiles at the antics of us older folks by the kids. Will be back again this year with the family and friends out around where Deep End was last year 830-9 and the last few roads out. We are in Santa Fe NM. Stop by and say Hi, we will have a silver sportsmobile and shade setup.

Ive brought my daughter for the last 3 yrs.

This year, she's taking a sabatical to get scolastics back on page one.

She will be turning 16 in July.
Do the math.

The difference between my Daughter and the average kid on the street is...she's growing up in SinReno, Knows how many fucking perverts are on every corner, and unfortunately every other house!

She is more mature then most.
She knows about sippycups...why...because her very own mom got secretly slipped a GHB dose first man burn! BAD!!!!

She know she cannot seperate from her buddy for any length of time or is to run, not walk back to our camp or Fire conclave asap!

I worried the first year.
~I worried the second year.
~~I will not worry this year.
~~~I will worry next year.
Crime unfortunately is prevalent in any city...Black Rock City is A CITY!!!!!
Names pinemom, but my friends call me "Piney".
GHB dose first man burn! BAD!!!!
us too....my second ex and i got it in 97', and we could not move for 4-5 hours.
literally....eyelids fluttering, somewhat aware of surroundings, totally helpless.
thank god we were together, and just stayed that way, since we were UNABLE TO MOVE...
it was scary, and this from a chemical afficianado.
if someone did this to my kid, or kids, i would kill them....thats not an idle threat either.
but in the same breath, you must teach them to avoid situations like these, and hope that they learned, the easy way.
A few years back, I found a girl (maybe 20 or so) passed out in our camp about 1:00 in the morning. She was cold and had short sleeves, bare legs and no jacket. I had trouble rousting her, but finally got her awake enough for her to tell me that her friends dropped her off, she had too much to drink and had no idea where her camp was. It's times like that, that I realized I am not a slug!
I got her warm blankets and when she finally warmed up enough, I got her into a sleeping bag and let her sleep things off for the night. I can't imagine ever being able to look at myself in a mirror if I were to take advantage of someone who was in distress like that. Forget the fact that it's illegal, only a real shithead would do anything wrong in a situation like that.
