When I first read this, Cryptofishist, I had the same internal debate. Something interrupted my response and I promptly realized someone else would take up the call while I took care of life. So your debate was not futile.
I also thought that fireworks were verboten until they started creeping into the event more and more over the last 2 years.

Sarah is unfortunately capable of attracting some voters to her cult. Hopefully it will split the right in your country between the social conservatives and the fiscal conservatives and neither will have a chance to be elected in sufficient numbers to do more of the kind of damage that's been done for the last 30 years.
Baked or fried, Alaska is better of without her as governor, methinks.

yeah, that's correct, the only bad deeds and poor decisions are from the right........
the saintly left wing just wants us all to be happy and march.........
and, they'd do it if not for the dastardly right wingers...........
Who has mostly controlled congress the last 30 years?
that's where the power, and therefore greed and corruption lie..........
the prez comes and goes.......the congress is there "forever"...........and, screws everything up. no prez can do much if congress doesn't go along........
or, are you just against the "right wing", or, anyone who disagrees with your politics?
Is the kanuc news only NPR?.........

wash your mouth out, young man...

it's not who, but what....
the non-stop sucking sound is MOST politicians, kissing the ass of big money, left or right it does not matter.
the machine exists to perpetuate itself.
do not blame the machine, or the mechanics for what the machine was made to do.
it is functioning as it sees fit to continue to function.
Money rules Washington. Money Rules New York, London, Paris, Zurich, Berlin,Rome,Tel-Aviv, Moscow, Beijing, Sydney, Kalifornia, Caracas, Bogota, Lagos, and Riyadh.
Money knows no religion, No Bounderies, No Laws.
Money and Science are just Tools, they are inherently AMORAL, not IMMORAL.
it is what the monkeys do with the club that is so important.
it is what we do with technology, not the technology itself.
it is about how we live, it is not about life.
get past all of that nonsense, and pick the pockets and the brains of both the left and the right, the extremes are far closer than you would ever imagine at this point.
the center will always, like weeble wobbles, tend towards the path of least resistance, and thats fine, for the masses, always has been.
We, The People who Burn, are Different.
We, the People who Burn care about things that others could care less about.
We, the Burners may have nothing, but you, my friend, can have half.
We, the Burners would prefer a good Laugh, a True Smile, the Thank You from a Stranger no more, than a shitty ass piece of paper.
We, the Burners, Knows where our Noses are, right in front of our Faces.
We, are weirdos, and wouldn't have it any other way.
We, the Burners, welcome everyone Home, except for the annoying british rave ponies....
ok, they can come too.....
We the Burners, want you, Our Old and New found Friends to Drink the fucking Kool-aid, and just Be Yourselves, its a big open playa out there, and we love it dearly.
we the Burners, will carry the fire into the Next Day.
E Pluribus Unum.
Once I noticed I was on fire, I decided to relax and enjoy the fall™

No ygmir and I probably shouldn't have delved into the topic, here anyway.
In my opinion, much harm has been done by all politicians of the left and the right in your country and mine. It's gotten so you can't tell the difference much any more. They are all attracted to corporate money and big lobbyist interests.
However, I still believe Alaska is better off without Sarah Palin as governor. If she plans a national third party, I'll watch the result with interest because I do think she can attract an audience and I seriously wonder why.
Let's all go play in the dust and ignore them for awhile!

I agree with a lot of that, Deb. I was just hoping for clarity, which, you graciously provided........
I blame both...........ergo my anarchist ways.........
I think it's up in the air if Alaska is better off.........It will, IMHO, take some time to see the outcome of her stuff........
I'd bet, she did some good and some bad..........how human of her, in relation to Alaska........
Just because someone is not popular with the MSM, or pundits, doesn't mean what they do is not good, IMHO....and, of course, the inverse.
that's my 2 pennies........
So many of us judge, and, we have very little in the way of facts to go on..........humans are, well, humans.........dang their flaws........
I instantly mistrust anyone in office.......but, that's just me......
*stepping off HGC's box, soap, that is*

Interesting Crosby. Marshall McLuhan would disagree and you can read 'Understanding Media' to see why. I think I agree with the spirit of your post, however I remember seeing a military general using pretty much the same quote, so....
The fact is technology has an inherent spirit and changes our sense ratios in ways we can't possibly predict. And the traumatic changes that come with the arrivals of all new technology prevent us from seeing what we're doing with technology.
As an example, television was just technology - a movie box cased in furniture - but despite the good and bad uses that it was put to, many of the effects that came from it were unintentional and were related to effects of the technology itself. No one could have predicted "talking points" or the effects on pro sports, for example, in the 1950s.
You night argue that all of these are what we "do with technology", but to me the implication of that phrase is that we make a decision to use technology a certain way.

wow, Boijoy;
I looked at the OP and wondered how we got so far off track.
Okay, so the guy wants to blow stuff up. hmm, sounds like a fun sorta person to be around.
I don't know the rules on the playa but fireworks are expressly forbidden in writing and yet for the last two years they have creeped into the event, officially and unofficially.
Not sure what that means. My policy has always been to go ahead and do it (safely) and ask permission later. But I didn't just say that, did I?
If you forget the safety part and someone gets hurt then there is usually hell to pay. But if it's all safe, you can get away with a lot.
BTW, it's the BLM that prohibits fireworks so you might want to look up what the fine is, in advance. Just to know how much the hell will be that you have to pay.

Fireworks haven't been "creeping in" in the last couple of years, if anything they have been tapering off, IMHO.
There used to be a lot more many years ago, but people have been getting smart.
I have had two seperate people get caught from my camp on Playa setting them off.
The fines were $350 and $670+40 hrs community service, respectively.
If you absolutely must set them off, don't do it on open playa in the middle of nowhere, as you will surely get nabbed by the LEOs.
Do it over at first camp, I heard Larry has a particular fondness for 2inch mortar shells.
Tell him MDMF007 sent you.

We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

OED, I'm nearly a virgin, you know! Only be going for four years..
The first two years there were nearly zero fireworks. Then in '07, I actually recall coming out of the newspaper tent when someone let off a whole bunch but it was from within the city - we couldn't find where they originated from.
And last year was an incredible display of official fireworks associated with the Crude Awakening and Man burns plus one bunch of bursts from around 7:30 just back from the Esplanade.
It's okay, OED, you can tell me my memory's off - I'm used to snark from young punks like you. I realize that you have much more experience with the earlier years of BM when fireworks were a fact of life, I understand.

Sampling Error. Unless you're on a Ranger or LEO radio frequency, you're knowledge of the number of fireworks shot off on any particular year is going to be based on your direct experience, possibly augmented by the experiences of campmates and friends. Nobody sees enough of a city of 50,000 to realisticallly get a sense of how m any fireworks are shot off in any particular year.
