Virgin with friends seeks camper to share...

Post by pinkyracer » Sun Jul 12, 2009 5:50 pm

Hey gang. So after centuries of saying this year... I'll actually go... and never going, I'm going to make a concerted effort this year. I have some assets: friends who've been going for years to guide me along, a toyota 4runner that can tow 5k lbs, I now live super close (SF), and don't have any commitments that week.

A little about me- I've been to a few Gigsville parties, Sea of Dreams, and performed at LA Decom a few years ago (hollaback thriller). Went to the party at American Steel last night and was all "why should I schlep out to the desert and chase litter through a sandstorm, when I can just come to Oakland?" People who've gone have said that even the radness that was happening there pales in comparison to BRC.

However, I know two things about myself. I must have a camper to escape to, and I must camp with people who are not wasted/ doing drugs. My friend told me she usually camps with Stella, so I'd like to camp with them too. Rumors abound that it's impossible to rent a camper to go to BRC, and of course I'd like to save $. So if someone who's drug-free has a spare bed in their camper, I'd be happy to barter or pay to be involved in that.

Thanks!

Suz

more about me here: http://pinkyracer.livejournal.com/

What I have to barter:
some interesting vintage (women's) clothes that could be perfect for the playa
clothing maintenance/modification (I'm an expert sewer/patternmaker, but won't spend the whole week tailoring, just as needed)
help around the camp- cleaning, making food, building stuff or tearing down
room for 4 others in my car
I probably have an ez up somewhere, need to ask about that

You shouldn't try to tow 5000 lbs with a 4runner.
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

Are you talking about a camper for a pickup or a trailer?

I'm with you in that I don't go to BM without my camper, but I have to caution you about making your home in a shared camper with strangers. You have a good chance of setting yourself up for a bad time.
Motorhome rental can be around $2000 for the event, your share of that would be enough to go on Craigslist and buy a little trailer of your own.
Camper logistics with multiple people get complicated, especially with strangers. The water supply, and waste water tank capacity, are VERY limited, and it only takes one person to screw up and blow all your reserves. That person could be either someone in your group who isn't familiar with campers and their systems, or a friend of one them, or any drunk and drugged asshole.
Sometimes it's someone trying to be nice by washing all your dishes... with the water running full-speed the whole time, like at home.
Food supply can have similar issues.

Someone in your camper group might wanna fuck the hell out of the weirdo freak they met at Center Camp in the camper, or might have different ideas about sleep times.

Sharing a small, limited-supplies space is usually best done with people you know and trust.

This will be my first BM, but not my first festival.
It took one time to share my camper with others to realize that the gas money offset was far outweighed by all the issues.

I came back to my camper to find a duffel bag full of grass being divided between dealers. Had Mr Cop stormed the unit at that moment, I would have likely still been in jail right now. (and this happened in 1991)

5K behind a small frame Toyota is not good for its transmission.

Even a full sized 1/2 ton pickup truck struggles with a true load of 5k behind it. 5k is about what a full sized Ford pickup truck weighs.
No matter where you go...there you are.

Where are the grumpy, sarcastic regulars who haunt this board? I'd expect numerous posts about the lack of radical self reliance by now.

They must be getting tired.

Or worried about AntiM harshing their snark

We just got a camper, 4000 pds, towed with a Ford F150 AND using a weight distribution hitch. I wouldnt want to tow it with anything smaller, including my Ranger which is rated for the capacity.

I dont know if now is the time to buy a cheap camper off CL, your liable to run into issues with it, plumbing problems, electrical as well, not to mention wheels, bearings etc.

Why not just solo it, or join a camp?
Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

Eh?

No need for snark here. She a Gigsville gal.

She is smart enough to know that $100 worth of 70% aluminet draped over her 4runner, some 12 inch carpenter nails and some zip ties can make her a mini retreat in the back of her ride. Fold down that back seat, toss in an old futon mattes and paradise happens.

look into renting a SMALL U-haul trailer It would provide shelter from the elements as well as privacy. I used my enclosed race car hauler for 3 years befor I got a cabover camper. Just load it corectly, and be careful if you have not towed before Good Luck!

There are a ton of plans here:

http://www.mikenchell.com/forums/

The classic teardrop, based on a 350.00 trailer available at any Harbor Freight store.

There are a ton of pics on the site.
If you were going to rent a UHaul trailer, you could buy one from HF, build a shelter with plywood for BM, then burn the wood at the end of the festival, tow home the frame...and use it again next year!
No matter where you go...there you are.
