Will my being under age restrict a lot of what I can do?

Post by lonelyplanetboy » Thu Aug 20, 2009 10:03 pm

As I've already posted, a huge portion of my holiday is centered around Burning Man, will me being 14 (One who is often mistaken to be older.) restrict me from participating in a lot, I've heard a lot about "Kidsville", will I be banished to Kidsville or something? Just checking so I don't make a giant mistake or nothing.
Thanks everyone, Adam.

just don't try to drink at a bar or gain entrance to a sex camp...you'll have a great time!

There are police at the event. If you try to get drugs, alcohol, or sex you run a big risk of getting arrested. Just keep that in mind and you will have fun.

One of the coolest, most involved, helpful people in my camp last year was 16.

You'll be fine :)

Don't get upset when people shy away from you, or have issues with your age - and always be honest and upfront. No need to potentially get others in trouble.

There will be a similarly-aged person in my camp, and I've been wondering about events and camps that will interest her, so I'm watching this thread for replies!

Check the what where when - I am fairly sure i heard about one event planned by teens to meet others...but I can't find it now. You also might have fun just volunteering at something once or twice, it's a fun way to meet and see the city.

There are some kids who've grown up attending the event and are now your age that I know - all really stellar people you might run into. Rather than being all camped together a la Kidsville (tho I think there's a Teensville there) they'll just be there with family in various places. Pretty safe bet you'll run into new friends your own age if you want to.

There are some things that are aimed at adults like the bars and such, but IMHO there is plenty of interactivity and interesting stuff to do (getting into the art, visiting theme camps, just hanging out and wandering around) that's pretty much ageless.

Wander by Anti M's Home for Wayward Art and find some art to adopt and take home. Not a big thrill, but sometimes I get interesting stuff in!

In a major way, most of the cool people you meet will be 14 at heart as well.

Thanks everyone! All your help is appreciated, I'm now not worried about being restricted at Burning Man anymore. Phew.
Thanks again, Adam.

No, you won't be banished there, unless the adults that are bringing you have already registered there, you'd have a hard time getting space at this point in time. As someone who will be voluntarily "banishing" my family there for the 2nd time, I'd like to think of it as a chill place to hang out, and venture forth from, to experience the burn through the eyes of our 6 year old. Of course my wife and I do wander forth sans child for some "adult" fun, not together, as it's not a babysitting service, unless we have a neighbor who'll swap watching kids with us, as we did last year.

Big advice: don't let your parents/guardians get lost!! Seriously, make sure that they're not going to panic and go running for help if you wander off to look at art. Set rendezvous times/places carefully, and stick to them! "Lost Child" screws up a lot of people's day.

Thanks, the people I'm going with know I'm going it alone a lot, and we've yet to set exact places and times. You wouldn't by any chance have any idea of a common place where people do this would you?
Thanks Fred, Adam.

There ae aways great land marks to meet up. They change every year. Center Camp is always a good spot to meet. You can meet up at the man. This stuff can all be worked out once you are there.

Awesome! I wasn't sure if the Man was available to be near until the Burn, that would probably be a good place of choice for a person like myself. I get lost in everything I find fascinating :P .

Playa info is a good default place to meet.
Or set one at the plazas if you are near those.

Two people enter the city at the same time and go different ways, and their burn may be almost totally different.
I saw part of the city with a very young group and their burn was very different.
There is plenty to do for all tastes.

There was a math camp a couple of years ago.
Even the same place may be different in five minutes.
Sometimes timing is everything.

It is best so. that way you can find the pertinent landmarks, that might not have been there yesterday, much less a year ago.

Hey Adam, Maybe you can hop on an art car and tour the art if your guardians agree to let you voyage out. The mutant art car fleet is always running around on the playa. Some host art tours to check out the far flung projects deep out on the playa. Many are traveling dance lounges or mobile parties. Please be careful and avoid drinking or doing drugs the event can be enjoyed sober despite what some say. Have a really fun time!

Thanks very much for that, and thanks for the detail! I didn't even know of the art cars that took you around, sounds like a blast! I'd love to score a ride on one of the art tours :D.
And yes I will refrain from indulging in any substances. I'm very pro "legalization", but I don't think anyone under at least 18 should be experimenting, simply because I appreciate my mind and the obvious misconception is that drugs strengthen the mind. Maybe it's true for people with a fully developed brain and body, but I think at my age they limit the power of your mind to the peak of the drug. But if you're 18 or 21, I think you should have a blast and do what you want. I'm off topic, but thanks again Nemo, you've added to my list of things to do at Burning Man, that's for sure! :P.
Thanks, Adam.

If there is any place you don't need drugs, it's the playa.

You might also check out the Fire convergence (fire conclave headquarters)
There are 3-4 kids I know that hang out there, helping out, sometimes helping to make fire tools..etc... My daughter, Burnerbaby16, has been going since she was 14. She's a fire spinner and hangs there with all her spinnin' buddies...Braden14, Nick 15, Ricochet 15....
although she cant come this yr. She will be back in 2010.
Might be something fun to do with one of your guardians....
LEARN TO SPIN FIRE!!! Or at least manipulate poi!
(dont be in a hurry to light up! LEARN the poi...learn your planes, master it before your first light up! and ask one of your guardians to learn fire safety!!! again before you light up...then you can look up in your home town for your local fire conclave, burn all year!)

I think right around esplanade and 630'ishhhh....
Look for the Artery(7'ish) and it should be somewhere to the left towards center camp.

And Center camp is HUGE on things going on, although I always hear about the stuff I missed and everytime Im there its crickets....?
Im sure thats just me, because my daughter used to hang there alot!

Yes, you won't be able to get your money's worth out of the event since you can't get into any camp that serves alcohol and any camp doing so will be dragged into jail of which i'm sure you really don't care.

You will have more fun at Disneyland where you will find more girls your age.

I don't agree that he will not be welcome in camps wich have bars. Maybe some, but most would only care to prevent him from partaking of adult beverages, not from being present at all.

My reading of the LEO related info suggests strongly that LEO is concerned about underage drinking. I have never read about anyone getting in trouble for a non-consuming minor in a BRC bar.

Of course, if I was the proprietor I would want to know and trust the minor...

Are you stupit enough not to think that the LEO's will not be testing for violations of underage drinking!

If your camp get caught, I won't shed a tear!
