Dare I post such a basic question? Perhaps Im missing.......

Post by TandJ » Tue Oct 27, 2009 2:52 pm

I have what I feel is probably the most basic of questions that I cant seem to find an answer to anywhere on the BM site or on here. So J and I are there..... Weve finally made the pilgrimage.... Tickets in hand.... What do we do when we get there... do they assign a parking space??? location??? I mean... how is it decided where I/We should camp at??? Please... someone help.... Thanks...

T and J

Camp anywhere that isn't reserved or in use after the gates open.

Don't try to park a 45 foot rv on the esplanade then.
There's always room.
You'll just have to look around further into the streets away from the esplanade.

Finding a spot

Post by Ash&Unico » Tue Oct 27, 2009 3:37 pm

Yes. The theme camps will be roped off, or marked with little colorful flags planted in the playa. These pre-assigned areas tend to be located more toward the center (as you get closer to Center Camp), so my girl and I will enter, drive toward Center Camp, and then outward from there, winding back and forth along the letter-streets till we can find something that hasn't been reserved, but isn't too far from a central location. You might get an idea of what theme camp pre-assignments look like from checking out one of the "moop maps" from a previous year. Here's the one for 2009:

http://www.burningman.com/environment/p ... p_map.html

Once you're camped in a spot, you can approximate your "address" using the radial "time markers" and the concentric letter streets, and enter it at Playa Info, near Center Camp, so that you and your friends can keep in touch.

Thursday Morning

Post by Ash&Unico » Tue Oct 27, 2009 3:42 pm

Sorry... hadn't noticed that comment about arrival on Thursday morning. You'll find it pretty impossible to get a spot closer to the center, but those outer letter streets may be wide open to you. It's always kind of a crap-shoot.

Keep in mind, the city is over a mile across, and what looks close in the desert, never is. Also, ice is sold at 3:00. 6:00 and 9:00...soo, hopefully you get the picture....

ask the Greeters for directions to First Camp.
They always have extra space.

That's a space, not a time.

It's big. Look at this picture, and you'll get a better idea of how big it is. You won't be following a trail of parking helpers with flashlights who direct you to the next empty spot.

I was pretty anxious about this too. I was thinking it was theme camps and then a few extra spaces (where?) for those unafilliated with a camp. I asked the same question of the greeter my first year. She told me there was a lot of empty camping space around the man. I parked at 5:30 and L, and waited for daylight to see what was what. A very nice neighbor brought me a cup of coffee in the morning, and I decided I like the area.

Your question is not out of line. I try to play out every scenio in my head, and that is a bit piece missing. The area that we are penned into for the week is 7 square miles. You will find a perfect spot to camp and you will have great neighbors. That's just how things work in Black Rock City!

WELCOME and we'll see you in 2010!! :D

That ain't all they are good for in the bathroom.
