Should I go to burning man?
Should I go to burning man?
It would be about 6,000 miles both ways and I would have to journey it alone.
What do you guys think?

Yup, you'll probably have a miserable time. Why waste the gas traveling that far for a week of dust.
I told my nephew, who was getting married around that time in 2009, that if he made it during Burning Man week, I would not be attending his wedding. He knew I wasn't kidding, so he made it a month later. I too travel 6000 miles round trip, but for me it's worth it.

The question does not really give enough information for an answer. Talk to people who have gone, read the website (especially the First Timer's link), browse the pictures, and think about it.
If you still have to ask the question then you probably won't have a good time, so save the hassle and don't go. If you find that you just have to go, then you'll find a way.

Read everything you can and watch all the videos on YouTube that you can find. It will either convince you to come or scare you away. My brother-in-law is joining our camp in 2010. He is coming from the Netherlands so that's close to 6000 miles one way.
You know it's going to be a bad day when you jump out of bed and miss the floor.

A Poem:
By Dr. zeus........
should I go to Burning Man?
yes, do go to Burning Man.
will I have fun, if I can?
yes, do go to Burning Man.
will I go and get a tan?
yes, do go to Burning Man.
Is there dust at Burning Man?
no, don't go to Burning Man.
Is it plush at Burning Man?
no, don't go to burning Man.
will I get laid at Burning Man?
no, don't go to Burning Man.
If these questions, are to deep,
Should I go, or should I sleep?
Shut the fuck up, drink the kook aid, figure it out for yourself..........

Go to a few burner parties locally, maybe even a regional burn. If you can't do that and burningman in one year, do that first and then if you decide you want to go, go in 2011.

To those who honestly and peacefully responded: Thank you.
To those who were being jerks: What the hell? I'm asking for an honest opinion not to be mocked.
To those who asked for more info: I am fascinated with the whole idea and concept of Burning Man. I would want to go because it seems beautiful in a strange, artistic, mysterious way and it seems like a one of a kind experience.
It would have to drive all the way from long island, NY. Alone. At the time I will have just turned 18.
I feel that life is fleeting and I don't want to wait until I find other people or it is easier to get there, etc.
Thanks a lot everyone.
Btw if your going to post something rude and pointless, please don't.

dude you should check out this site more thoroughly. the snarkiness that you perceive to be rudeness is just people poking a little fun. Do a little research like was suggested, there are plenty of regional events in your area meet up with some people who have already been and you won't have to drive out by yourself. oh and burning man sucks I've been four times and every time i have one of the worst weeks of my life. Maybe I'll see ya next year!

Why are you planning on driving the 3000 or so miles? Have you considered flying and meeting up with people when you get to Reno? If you meet up with some local burners, you can possibly make some contacts and friends to camp with.
Also, 18 is a young age to be traveling across the country by yourself. I would recommend that you buy a ticket when they go on sale, and start making connections and arrangements for the trip, but keep things open enough for you to either fly or drive, with or without someone else. The trick is to buy the ticket and all else will fall into place.
Yes, there is a whole world out there and if you're not offended by nudity and craziness, then this might be the place for you.
As for Simon, we don't talk about Simon!
I hope this gives you enough info to ask further questions, and by the way---WELCOME!

Mr. freeDOOM sent me a somewhat snarky PM. I thought my advice was proper. If you have to question whether or not you should go, I do believe not going at this time is the best decision. Burning Man is not for everybody. It could be argued it isn't even for most people, so doing some soul searching would seem to be in order.
Most people on this forum who know me will likely testify that I am neither an asshole nor a jerk. In fact, I try to be supportive, give advice that only having gone to TTITD* for 11 years would allow, and am willing to help fellow burners in their time of need.
So lose the attitude young man or prepare to withstand the wrath of Doc.
* TTITD is That Thing In The Desert, but you wouldn't have known that now would you?

FreeDOOM,
You shouldn’t take it all as being rude. This is a question that gets asked a lot around these parts and once you’ve attended the event, you’ll understand why you might get such a response. Almost every single person I’ve ever met who was only half interested in going to Burning Man had a terrible time. They didn’t explore it enough to get rid of their expectations. And just the logistics to get there are a major undertaking. It takes our crew a year of planning and saving money, then four solid days to drive out there. And then we get there in the dark and have to unpack everything and setup camp just enough to get some rest after our last day of driving 10 hours on top of stopping for supplies for an additional 3 or so hours. Then we get to enjoy the week, and pack everything back up to drive four days back and hit the ground running upon return in order to keep the bills paid.
My point is that it’s a really big commitment, especially so from so far away. And the short answer after the long answer is that if you are not certain that you want to attend, then you probably shouldn’t.
But if you keep reading the website and hang around here a bit, you’ll find your answer in crystal clarity. There are a lot of good people here and plenty of things to inspire your first adventure.
So welcome. Why don’t you start by telling us something else about you?
How did you hear about Burning Man?

Hey DOOM. Welcome.
I'm new here too. The snark you see isn't folks being mean. It's just internet snark. You'll start to see through it after a little while on the boards. I myself, like snark, so it's easy to see.
I'll feed the discussion a bit.
I have a boss who's a Burning Man Ranger of many years. He's been trying to 'talk me into' BM for 2 years now. I went to a party where I met several other people, Burners, and just decided it was time. The point? The same thing could happen to you. I agree with the advice regarding some type of regional event; you might meet people who turn you on to it or off, but I think talking with some people, meeting them, will serve you well.
Care to share what it is about the idea that intrigued you? That might help folks steer you in the right direction as far as research, but if you use the search function on these boards, most questions have been asked and answered. It's not as easy as instant gratification, but rather your first step in collaborating with the do-acracy.

Treat people like you want to be treated. Really...it's simple and it actually works
Hey Zach,
I find that the whole freedom of expression is really interesting I'd like to observe and participate in it.
The fact that a city of 50,000 pops up and disappears.
A want to be part of something much bigger than myself. Meeting cool people.
Overall it seems like it would be an experience that will not be found anywhere else and don't want to miss it and wait another year.
