Virgin burner from Long Island

Post by Constantly Wired » Tue Jan 05, 2010 9:42 pm

Hey all!

2010 will be my first burn though I've been wanting to go for years.
One thing that was holding me back was my SO at the time. She did not approve of many things in life I enjoyed or things I wanted to do.

BM was one of these things.

I'm a 25 year old caucasian male from Long Island NY.
For me, 2010 is about self-exploration and most certainly survival. This is my time to find myself and what better place to do it than BRC.

Now time to save for a ticket and other expenses.

Any local burners please make you presence known. I would love to interact with some locals and get a better idea of what I am in for.

Welcome Wired!

Plan a lot! Read a lot too... I think you'll love the playa. Its dry as fuck out there, but if you plan to make yourself comfortable, the experience will be much better. Happy Burn!

Welcome wired. Best of luck finding yourself. Bring a mirror with you!
This is an amazing place and I'm sure you'll have a great time while there. There will be thousands of other caucasions there, but you will find a limit on Long Islanders. If you are asked at the entrance where you are from, say Kansas, Iowa or Missouri. Just don't say, Long Island! :D

Tickets go on sale January 13th at 1:00pm EAST COAST time. Poke around eplaya, read all you can and we'll see you on the playa in just a few short months.

Long Island is another place I used to live.
I've also missed a year or two of Burning Man due mostly to an S.O.-at-the-time being un-burnery.

I've got just two things to say here: Go to B.M., and move west!

I won't be advertising anything like that about myself while there, just trying to find myself and some burners with similar views on the world.

You are going to have a blast. Good thing you are doing it without someone who will require more than they can give. Your life is going to change for the better my friend. Read the survival guide a few times life will be much better for you if you do.

Hi, from one newbie Burner to another.

Oh, and I trust that admitting you are from LI is as bad as me saying that I reside in the Jersey Shore. You know, not that Jersey Shore. Leave the fake tan and fist pumping at home folks.

Ha!

Saving for the ticket is the first step. I hope you bought one already, or are planning on it. That was the best advice a fellow Burner ever gave to me - buy a ticket and you can't look back!

That's good advice with the ticket. I got mine last week. But my BF and I are still in the process of deciding whether we are going because despite having the tickets already, it is still quite an expense.

Your expenses will be a little high the first year, with all the one time supplies you will have to buy---tent, sleeping bag, camping stove etc.
As far as food and other consumable provisions, you would be buying that stuff no matter where you were. If you're driving, you will be buying a few extra tanks of gas than you would if you were home, so drive a little less now and save up for the cross country adventure.

I promise you that you will not regret making this amazing trip.

Oh, I can almost guarantee that I wouldn't regret the trip. I am looking for hand-me-down supplies and borrowing ones from family. I heard that everything gets wrecked on the playa so buying new, expensive supplies is useless, unless it becomes permanent playa gear :D . I know that I need a new grill because my boyfriend has a charcoal one, but I heard that's a big no-no.

^ Well, with just over 6 months to plan, you can research items on Craigslist, check out Goodwill even, and start making purchases online. A little here, a little there. The game is survival and doing it as a group, but also making sure that you are prepared as well, both mentally and physically...

Since you are traveling, you also have to consider how you are going to transport everything too (plane and checking things in, etc.). Or, if you have friends who are going, or family in the area, you can consider shipping items to them.

Fun times ahead!

Not being held back by an SO is a very legit thing to be worried about. You really don't want a ball and chain, especially your first year. Good call. Sounds like you are ready to come explore! Welcome!

There's no ball and chain in my relationship so I'm not too worried (and I'm sure everyone in a relationship says that....). We're both very open minded. I've read alot about what I could be in store for once I get there. I've also read the 'Burning Man with a GF' thread. I feel like we could be one of the lucky ones who are brought together by the experience, rather than torn apart.

Staying positive is the name of the game.

That's awesome. I totally understand. I've just had an ex that, although I love her to death, she was very much my responsible girlfriend. She fit in with the being a student, working fulltime, and having a girlfriend routine. Not the going out to the desert and running around for 7 days not eating enough and drinking too much routine. But I'm sure having anyone that cares enough to look out for you health and best interest is an asset to anyone on the playa. Good to hear you've been doing your research tho.

As you travel west along I-80, one of the delights is playing "spot the burner". Just too dang easy on your way home.
