Preparing for my first time in 2011
Hi, I'm Stephanie, from the central coast out here in non-freezing California.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to go later this year,
but I am ready to start preparing for next year.
I have a couple ideas and things i want to do and things I want to particpate in. I have been looking at all the wonderful things on this page, and it seems like there is not only a lot going on, but it seems a tad overwhelming. Not really sure where to start. Thanks for listening if any burners are out there
~Stephanie Joy
Welcome, Stephanie!
It is SUPPOSED TO be overwhelming! That's part of the fun your first year -- allowing yourself to be overwhelmed.
Don't plan any big projects for your first year. Make some costumes, and prepare for the living conditions. Then just enjoy being overwhelmed -- it's OK.
Read the Survival Guide and much more on the main web site.
If you start planning now, you will be overqualified by August 2011, and may miss out on some of the overwhelmance (I just made that word up). So try to make it this year.

I hope the overwhelmance (lol) will stay with me through that course, cuz trust me, I have NEVER done anything like this before. I am not going too big on the projects, just want to do a lil mushroom garden :D. I am getting confused on how we are staying there though.. do i get my own tent, or how do the theme camps really work??
~Stephanie Joy
Stephanie, yes you bring your own tent, your own food, your own water, and anything else you need or want for the whole week. The only supply available at the Festival is ice (frozen water) in cubes (for drinks) and blocks (for food and beverage storage). And there is one location where you can buy coffee. (And many where you can get coffee free.)
That said, if you coordinate with other people, then somebody with a truck might haul all the water for the group, and you in your 1958 Volkswagen might be relieved of that burden. Such arrangements are entirely up to the individuals.
You do not need to join a Theme Camp. I estimate that only a small percentage of participants belong to a Theme Camp. Theme Camps are well-organized groups that apply to the event organizers for a reserved space. That's the main difference. On your own, you simply camp any place that is not reserved. Look on the main web site and find a map from a previous year. The reserved areas are marked, so you can get a good idea.
Someone else told me she went to Burning Man as a way to expand her "comfort zone". Sounds like this applies to you also. Well, she loved it, and odds are you'll survive too.
And keep asking questions.

No, no, no! Sorry! The picture of Mae West was simply to celebrate Ygmir's "...happy to see you" wisecrack. It's a line from one of West's movies: "Is that a pistol in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"
We old coots still know that line, and Ygmir put it to good use. Except, we both forgot that you kids don't know who Mae West was!
[Note to self: People under 50 were born yesterday.

Well now, see.... Maybe you are over-analysing this, Stephanie.
You see, we get a lot of stupid question and stupid comments on this board -- from people who refuse to read the Survival Guide, and from people who are trying to sell a product, or trying to get something for free.
A typical example would be "I want a Mutant Vehicle; where is the Mutant Vehicle store?" In that case, the straight answer is "There is no MV store; you have to build your own." But some of us "Usual Suspects" (that's from the movie Casablanca with Bogart and Bergman) on this board would probably give a sarcastic and humerous ("snarky") answer -- for the amusement of the rest of us.
That's why I issued that warning about snark, using a "six-shooter" analogy. Ygmir picked up on the "pistol" and made the wisecrack about a lump in a man's trousers, from a Mae West movie. I acknowledged the wisecrack by posting a picture of Mae West, indicating that I understood the joke. This is called Thread Drift -- drifting from answering your questions to making jokes. All in good fun.
Now. Back on topic. Please tell us about the "...couple ideas and things I want to do and things I want to particpate in" that you mentioned in your original post. I'll try to protect you from any snark. Or not.

you are so kind to explain all this.......you may need to follow us, me in particular, around to explain jokes and snark........
I'da probably left her (?) to twist in the wind figuring out the "gun in my pocket" or Bogart line.........

im definately not trying to get anything for free, or sell anything, or have somebody make something for me, and trust me, that would come off as kind of troublesome. and i have read a lot of stuff on the website but this is something i have never done before. What I am looking for is personal experiences, all the pictures and stories, and just everything does not do it justice. I was interested in being a lamplighter and just having something cool that I made on my own. But being as this truely is something I have never done before, this is my attempt to get the lay of the land.

Welcome Stephanie! You did this right thing, the right thing of planing for 2011 and coming here first.
Take your time. It will be alright.
Cheers!
(now make sure you pat yourself on the back and make sure you stay yourself. Everyone in this thread you created are true Burners that are giving great advise.)

Well, there you are! So to speak. We have pictures and stories, and after you gain your personal experiences -- be it this year or next -- you'll have plenty of them too!...personal experiences, all the pictures and stories, and just everything ...
I'm not completely up on the Lamplighters, but I'm pretty sure anyone can be one. There may be a waiting list.
Last time I counted, there were over 10.000 photos in the Image Gallery on the main web site, going back to the 1990s.
This forum also goes back many years, but you have to wade thru a lot of our "thread drift" -- which you will get used to.
I gotta wade my way to Sacramento and work for a living for a couple of days. You kids play nice, now!

I totally agree, the over stimulation and shock, are part of the greatness. Feeling way overwhelmed, a little timid, a little unsure, then everything working out amazingly is one of my favorite parts.Elliot wrote:![]()

I do have to say though, no matter how much you read and absorb, nothing can prepare you for the actual experience.
Why don't ya stick your head in that hole and find out? ~piehole
