Hi family
Danny here, * still deciding on playa alter ego * for now il go w/ real name.
Ive been all over this board and bm main website sucking information from the intrawebz.
Our crew will consist of - my beautiful gf, Dawn. Shes the sunshine in my life and myself who will be relocating from VA to South Flordia in the next month.
We've planned a longggg time to do this and after friends bailed we decided to skip renting an RV and just get a rental GAS CHUGGIN' suburban
So now you know a few deetz about me, i hope you dont have any preconcieved notions of us. :D
Sooo... I have a few ??s for some vets.
For starters my Dawn and I are flying into reno. were have a hotel room w/ a full kitchen and cookware. Im going to prep all foods and try to freeze some things last minute over night in the freezer in the hotel.
My question is about a tent. We were thinkin about sleeping in the SUV fold down the seats but have the tent to just have up ??
Do people sleep in ovens (cars) like this or is this an outrageous idea? Also we where do burners aquire re-bar to hold down tents? Its not like I can pack rebar in my suitcase.

Get your rebar at any hardware store in Reno (along with a sledge hammer, vice grips, and gloves) and don't forget to cover the ends of the rebar with tennis balls or water bottles after you pound them into the playa, rebar is hungry and likes to bite ankles, shins, and feet.

Sleeping in the SUV is OK, but not the best idea. Besides the cramped conditions, it'll heat up like an oven right after sunrise making for a very short nap if you're out late enjoying the night time playa. There are strategies for minimizing the heat in a vehicle...such as parking it inside a Costco shelter, in the shade of a big RV, etc. Otherwise, keep it closed up tight, going inside only when there is no wind or dust in the air.
I'd recommend a cheap family sized tent on the order of 10' X 10' give or take. You don't need rebar. Stake it down with nail-like 10" aluminum tent pegs. The pegs are light weight, easily carried, do the job just fine, pull out easily when breaking camp. Try to position tent behind a larger structure/vehicle to take advantage of morning shade.
All tents have mesh vents overhead...try to tightly hand stitch cut-to-size blanket material to the vents to minimize interior dust. Even then, cover everything with an old sheet when you're out and about.
If you're in Reno a day or two, there's plenty of camping gear stores to pickup camping supplies, not to mention all your food, water and beverages.
No one is totally immune from the dust at BRC. Some strategies are better than others in dealing with it. Some folks have no tolerance for the dust, and others bathe in it...ymmv. Bottom line is that you'll survive even with minimum preparations. Just make sure you have read the Survival Guide front to back 10 times, and got your water and food.
Have a great Burn!!

Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.
