Hallo.

Post by MadCellist » Thu Mar 25, 2010 11:56 am

I'm a complete noob to Burning Man, but I've been curious and reading about it since at least 2000.

Not much to say. Classical cellist working on my masters degree. Living in Florida attending Preheat 2010 down here and will hopefully make Burning Man one day.

:D
Can you get your hands on an inexpensive / expendable cello -- one that can be risked in the desert climate?

There is a lot of electronic dance music at Burning Man. This is good and well, but many of us long for more "real" music out there. You'd be a hit for sure!

Look around on this forum -- there is some discussion about the health and safety of musical instruments at Burning Man. Probably in the Q & A section.

Hope to hear you play on the Playa!

(I'm bringing two pianos.)
:D

Definitely a need for music out there.

...Most amps are poorly shielded. I wonder if I could jam the preamp section?

share a Playa Moment Time..

Year of the Red Temple 2004?

Took some of my Dads ashes in a small wood box and stashed them in the Temple. I spent a lot of time that year with Dad hanging out with Dad. Way off year for me, but was great in it's own way. Back to the moment. This man from Japan with major money camera's hanging around his neck invading people space. I sat back and watch this go on for a while when this Hippy walks into the mix with his cello.
He pulls it out of the case and starts to wander the Temple to find the right spot to play. This Japanese guy gets all excited seeing the cello. The guy spoke no English at all. They somehow figured out he wanted to play. He sat down and started playing and fell into his zone so fast that the Temple stopped. I could go on about what went on, but why, you get the picture.

It truly is my best moment in 12 years on the Playa. 8) 8) 8)

Damn that's one hell of a story! I would totally surrender my cello to an excited Asian guy doing pantomime!

As far as taking my instrument on the Playa, I'm rather duplicitous. Going to pre-heat in Florida I'm more concerned about torrential down pours and the site flooding. It doesn't come with a flotation device. I think for my first time at Florida PreHeat I'll go sans instrument just to see what goes on. Maybe I can scare up enough money for a fiberglass cello next year I'll take it. It won't sound as nice but they can practically take a bullet.

If I get to make it out to the desert I'm not worried about keeping it moist I've got electric and natural humidifiers for the case. Thanks for the welcomes!

I got my pre-heat invitation last night, starting to get really excited.

If you want to stop a bullet, take a B3 organ.
They have been known to stop one.

We have juke joints here.

Or bring a viola instead. Nobody's minds seeing a viola destroyed, and nobody expects one to sound good.

I think I had an M-100 BTW...

No, I never mastered it. The Hammond was plenty challenging. :)

with a humidifier in the case, kept out of dust and sun, your cello will be fine. Over the years, we've had grand pianos, violins, guitars, bassoons (yes, plural), and an oudh in camp... it's only a week; if you take care, the instrument will be fine! Cello is one of my favorite instruments to hear on the playa...
