Hi and Thanks

Post by sastanczak » Fri May 21, 2010 11:32 pm

Happy to finally be part of Burning Man.

Ways I can contribute include ...

environmental eductation, plant stuff, desert stuff, hiking/camping stuff, people helping, stuff building, hardworking-ness, weekends prior stuff, stuff stuff!

Any guidance or volunteer opportunities would be appreciated if thrown my way.

Thanks for being there Burners.

Welcome!

For my part I say you put your name in for volunteering. Naturally once you get out to the playa everything will be different from what you expected so try not to over extend yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing your own thing the first year (and giving what comes naturally). It's perfectly okay to just go and wander around offering your help in between being overwhelmed by the city. You will be overwhelmed but in a good way!!

So don't feel like you have to do everything all at once. For me at least that's an easy trap to fall into. Put your own mask on first.

Oh, and most importantly, you could try connecting with the regionalevents!! It's a great way to meet people before you get there. But again, don't feel like you have to do everything all at once!
It was better next year. -Burners

Welcome!
Is this your first year? or just your first post on ePlaya?
Cricket is right, don't make any plans for you first year. This will be my second year and the only plans I'm making are real loose. Or plan to be spontaneous.
Why don't ya stick your head in that hole and find out? ~piehole

Well, I didn't exactly say not to make plans to volunteer but you just don't need to feel forced to. Once you get there you will have a million chances to help out. You will also realize that no matter how much you prepared you still forgot something. You can always just volunteer with lamp lighters or try helping out any little camp that wants a hand. If you are an artistic type there's nothing wrong with bringing a (relatively small) piece of art and propping it up by your camp. I did that and it was a great way to meet people. Then again I just used the art to trick people into coming into our inconspicuous Costco barn complete with 45 gallons of homebrew beer on tap. Everyone was impressed that it was our first year... However... I don't recommend that approach to anybody else unless you are a glutton for punishment. We made a lot of mistakes that could have been avoided if we didn't try something fancy our first year.

If you are looking for ways to contribute then you really won't have a problem finding them!

Here is the only picture I have of my little "art". It was a 2 foot dome covered in fully powered half disassembled computer hard drives. They were so broken.. So very broken.. But all that freaky clicking-clacking-clanking noise that people associate with their computer falling apart sure starts a conversation.
