Hello Everyone

Post by redu4ia » Fri Jun 11, 2010 12:41 am

Hi everybody,

My name is Catie and this will be my first burn! I am a UC Santa Cruz alumni and I am a grad student now in Game Design. I also love to write and sew. I can do web design and video editing. I recently discovered solar art as well, which should be pretty easy to do at Burning Man!

I have been a part of the rave scene for some 4 years and am moving into other types of festivals. Obviously an EDM junkie, in all of its forms. Hoping to work on some personal projects and also help out and lend some creativity to Burning Man!

I still am not part of a theme camp though, and would like to join one. It looks like it is too late to fill out the questonaire, but I hope to learn about one and be admitted.

Lovely to be here!

Hi Catie,

Welcome to eplaya and to Burning Man. By solar art, do you mean pyrography with a magnifying lens and the sun? That is a lot of fun. I've seen homemade dual lens units before that were like using a laser of something. I almost brought something my first year to do this with since the desert is full of sushine. Lots of fun.

Plenty of electronic music out in the desert and lots of non-electronic too. Have fun planning your adventure!

go to the part of the forum called "2010 Theme Camps" and look through the threads. Send messages to those camps that interest you. They also just issued the theme camp list for this year, you might find something interesting there.
But, and this is important, you don't have to join a theme camp. You can show up, put up your tent where you please (just so long as it isn't some sort of disputed zone) and be independent. Many camps are already closed for the year, so having a plan to do it for yourself is not a bad idea.

Yeah, you don't need to join a theme camp to have fun there, that's for sure. :D

Thanks everyone for the responses and advice!

Yes, Le Chat Noir, that's what I meant by "Solar Art." Didn't know there was such an official term for it! Should be a fun practice to explore.

Good to know that you don't need to join a camp... according to the site, its a huge part of Burning Man, and my friend Richard who I am going with really wants to join one. Could make things easier for us! It would also mean we will be more social I think.

I am checking out the list... I'll have to try to weed out some good ones but this is going to be a long process! Have other people here had any experiences with any particular camps they'd like to share?

I wouldn't belong to a camp that would have me as a member!

Seriously, the best you can do at this point is sift thru the Theme Camp list. Most of them have filled their rosters for this year. If you can't find one to take you in use your time this year to check them out. They come in many flavors.

Some are incredibly organized, some not so much. Some charge a camp fee, others require a huge amount of work, some both, some nothing at all.

When you come in find a camp spot next to a non-theme camp group that looks like they got their shit together...especially one that has a big shade structure. Bake 'em a cake or apple pie and make friends! If you can't bake, bring a big bag of chocolate chip cookies!
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

Howdy. I'm a Slug. Welcome.

And these people are right. Just come prepared and you are fine. If you do want to get really involved then try to get in touch with some local burners where you are living now and try to help them out. It's a shame we didn't get in touch earlier. I was up in Santa Cruz last year working on an interactive computer operated video project but had to put it aside for lack of time. I won't be there again until just before I head up to Reno to join my camp. The programming knowledge necessary for the project was minimal but I bet you could have easily helped. Next time.

See you on the playa!
It was better next year. -Burners
