Flying solo from Australia! First time

Post by davich » Mon Jun 14, 2010 7:09 pm

Hi everyone!

So I'm jumping on a plane from Australia to Reno, by myself, to make my first journey to Burning Man. I have no idea how I'm going to get to burning man, or get enough supplies to survive for the whole week!

My name's David and this will be my first trip to America.

I'm kind of scared, but it should be great fun :)

This is covered in other threads. I'm not sure what a good search term would be.
Basically, you need to rent a car, run around Reno like a nut buying things (ask Phil from the Q & A, Tips and Tricks forum to post the link to his wife's list), and then drive out to the playa to set up.
Plenty of people do this in variants every year.

You can also go to the Burning Man Rideshare Help Desk at the Reno airport...assuming it will be set up this year...if the car rental thing doesn't pan out.
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

...? Is this like the Daft Punk concert? I know there's a ride share and a Reno airport and a help desk.. but this combination of words confuses me.
It was better next year. -Burners

Understandable, because your mind is on the road to BRC.

There are some theme camps you can join, offer to work, send them money and they will have your food there and you'll have a better time.

That's not a bad idea at all. They do exist although most theme camps I know of still expect you to take care of your own food, some do have a communal meal budget (or they at least offer it). Worth checking out.

And worst case you could probably hook up with someone reliable and ask them to do it for you. Now that's the hard part. Reliable people. My camp hasn't closed it's doors yet. We are based in Reno and we can probably help coordinate a few things for you. I could at least help get enough food/water/shelter for you on the playa as part of our camp dues. Probably not cheap but compared with the plane ticket you've already paid... PM me if you are interested.

PS, this doesn't mean you can avoid reading all the material you can get your hands on. Please read every piece of survival guidance you can find.

You will be quizzed before they allow you to eat a single mouthful.
