2700 miles to BRC in 2011

Post by Zibletz » Sat Oct 23, 2010 10:42 am

Just learned about the burn 2 weeks ago and I am committed to make the journey in 2011!
For me, it will take traveling 3,000 miles toward what I hope will be the experience of a lifetime.
I'm really excited about this, and I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions for the eplaya board as the days, weeks, and months go by!
I thank you all in advance...

May not apply to you, but from Memphis, SF is the same distance as Reno on roads.

The drive across the American west is one of my favorite parts of the entire journey. If you've never done it, get ready to learn why they call it, "Big Sky Country".

yes! the drive west is beautiful! i was born and raised on the west coat. try to check out sedona and the grand canyon if you have time in arizona. both places great for after burning man. also try and check out yosemite in cali. i heard a lot of people go there to decompress after burning man.

OoOOps, I should have been more specific.. I'm not actually driving the 2700 miles although if time/money/being alone driving cross country were not an issue I would definitely think about it!!
Currently, I'm planning to do the fly out/drive in thing. My sister now lives on the west coast, and it's only a 12 hour drive from where she is.

(On a side note, when I was 6, I was lucky enough to be taken cross country with my parents. We saw a lot of cool things - many of which I actually remember - like Devils Tower before it got commercialized by the movie.)

Yosemite is definitely on my bucket list.

My father was in the Navy, as was I and MyLarry. I've been cross-country several times, and have often made time for stops at interesting places. Now that MyLarry drives a truck, I get to go on long rides, but without the fun stops!

LOL - originally Exit 1/2 down by you, Pyro.
Now 8 or 9 depending on congestion. Sometimes even as early as 6. Ugh

Hello fellow Jersey Burner, and welcome. This year was my first burn, and i flew out to L.A. from Jersey to meet up with my girlfriend, and we drove the 10+ hours to BRC. It was....interesting.lol. It's pretty stressful, especially since i flew out there just a couple days before the burn. All the weight was on her shoulders to obtain the necessary supplies and preparations, which i wish wouldn't have had to be the case, but that was kind of our only option. Being Burgins and not knowing anyone that was going, we read all the checklists online, and ultimately waaaay over-prepared because of it. So, if i were to do it all again, and i'm sure i will, i'd certainly do things a little differently.

A cross country trek might not be so bad if there were a convoy of a few Jersey burner traveling buddies. Might be an option for me next year. I'm
in construction, and was totally bummed that flying out there, i couldn't bring all my tools to help out with some builds, or even build my own shade structure . i also already owned a lot of things we could of used out there that instead, my girlfriend had to buy, beg, or borrow.Who knows. We'll see what next year brings.

Anyway, welcome to eplaya! If you have any questions to ask of someone that's already done what you plan to do, feel free to ask. Take care

Hi Badfishhh - nice to meet you :)

Luckily I have a friend who has 10 yrs experience burning, so I've been getting a lot of tips. My sister does a lot of camping out there on the west coast so she has literally truckload of gear as well, so I really am fortunate.
I know exactly how you feel about begging for stuff that is sitting in your garage. It would be so much cooler to be able to just roll right in with your own truck full of construction materials.

Thanks for the welcome -- Don't be surprised to hear from me over the course of the coming months!

Even experienced burners do it a little differently each year.

Really? You only heard about it two weeks ago? Interesting. Perhaps our understanding of the commercialization of Burning Man isn't as apparent as we may have thought?

YEah, how could he have missed all those prime-time infomercials and the Larry Harvey Shopping Channel with 24 hours a day of burningman shopping?

Apparently all my friends who have been in the "know" who I've mentioned it to recently are pretty much thinking either I've been living under a rock (like you), or that BM is just a big drunken/drugged out rave in the desert.
Most of them have never heard of it.

"She" doesn't watch all that much shopping network... I'm thinking it's a good thing I discovered it quietly, eh?

You mean it isn't a big drunken/drugged out rave in the desert?
