New to Burning Man, from NYC
I'm really considering going to burning man this summer! I'm living in NYC
now and my only concern is not having anyone to go with me. I'm rather impulsive so I may end up just buying and ticket and hoping it all goes well from there but I'm wondering if this is a dumb move or not. Do a lot of people take on Burning Man without a game plan? I don't know, but hopefully it all works out for the better.
Also, if I did buy a ticket would it be hard to sell it later if I realize that I can't go?

Welcome. You will need a survival game plan at least. Do read the First timers and Survival guides found on the main site. If you show up without the basics, you'll be miserable and we'll all call you a dirty hippie. As far as a game plan: ticket/transportation/survival needs (shelter, food, water, hat, sunblock, jacket). The rest will take care of itself.

Lot's of people from NY come out to play in the dust. Hell lot's of people from the east coast make the trip every year. Something you should think about is join' your regionals list. ( http://regionals.burningman.com/us_ny.html )

I agree. Join your regionals list.
That being said...lots of people do it on their own. I went solo my first year and met up with some awesome people at Stag camp. Turned out to be a good family for me.
Honestly, you can set up camp anywhere that's not reserved, introduce yourself to your neighbors, and have a grand time with out a friend. I recommend it!

I'm also a newb from NYC. There several groups up here that you can get involved with if you want to camp with somebody who's going.
The two that I'm involved with are Kostume Kult and Disorient
they throw and attend all the big public events as well as many awesome private events around the city throughout the year.
You've seen their likes a ZombieCon, SantaCon, The Iditerod, Bioluminescence......
Awesome people IMO, google them and check it out.
