Newbs from STL already getting ready already

Post by Keigh » Mon Feb 28, 2011 6:30 am

Hey Burners! Just coming for the introductory coffee and cookies.

I'm Keigh and I'm coming to Burning Man 2011. It will be my first as well as the first time for the 7 other people, including my amazing boyfriend AK (together we are Team KAK) and our great friend Bre, our patroness who used her tax return to purchase 6 tickets and intends to rent transportation.

Collectively our camp will be KKBLAM (all our initials minus the latecomers). While we have some ideas for structure/decorations/power, we're not setting anything in stone just yet but will keep you updated, especially since we'll probably need you to answer so many of our questions!

Oh yes must mention we have applied to camp with the AEZ and hope to build our own small solar panels to power swamp coolers and maybe batteries to keep the lights on.

Any tips are of course appreciated and welcomed!!

See you at the MAN!

Ahhhhhh! A patroness.

Where can I find one of those????

I was hoping AK might have been because he was an avid AudioKarma member.... I've got one of those here. Hear those initials sometimes several times a day!!!

Enjoy your getting-ready process. It's costly but priceless!!!

My patroness is certainly one of a kind! Although, Only one of the tickets is a graduation gift, the rest of us are paying her back in full.

I'm beginning to notice that costliness...

Yesterday we purchased two used camelbak's ($40) and also looked at goggles ($25) OTG goggles (for me, still no choice or decisions made there but anywhere from 20-100 bucks!) a HUGE tarp ($35 also did not purchase yet) not to mention I want to build solar panels and swamp coolers....

Plus I am making beaded gifts and haven't even gotten the sparkly beads.

One idea I had was to contact my group and provide the list of supplies they would need for their own swamp cooler, and then we could have a workshop so we could all build it together.

It gets hot on the playa, but shade, combined with a misting system would be a cheaper alternative to a swamp cooler. I carry a spray bottle with water in it.

Welcome Keigh,

If you're on a budget, these goggles work very well & are very cheap. You can't see the foam very well in the picture, but they conform nicely to the face because of it and don't leave vicious red marks. I am something of a collector, and while not as attractive as some of my other pairs, they work the best and are due for some customization this time . . .

(I bought mine at an Army Surplus store.)

That's not actually coffee in your cup, and those aren't cookies on your plate. It's actually huge doses of snark and lots of nasty back-biting.

Oh fuck. I got the tone wrong again. I thought it was light-hearted and flippant.

oh and shade is certainly not being overlooked in KKBLAM. The Huge tarp mentioned above is reportedly a really huge blue tarp which recently served as a roof for a house and which would be strapped up or down over the area. But we also have tents and likely an rv which we will want to cool without running the genny. and the huge blue tarp is apparently about 3 feet by 7 feet folded up and took three grown men to carry.... so transportation of it to the playa seems complicated at best.

Thanks for the tip! are those goggles made for wearing over prescription glasses? They look like they might get pretty foggy, have you noticed that at all?

I can't remember if they got foggy because I was wearing them in a duststorm and didn't expect to see that well, so I wasn't really thinking of "are these foggy. . . or are they covered in dust on the outside?"

In any event, I could see well enough to navigate off the Esplanade during the big storm on Burn Night.

I just now managed to fit them over a pair of Liz Lemon-style glasses 5 1/8" across and 1 1/4" high, though it must be said that the bridge of my nose is pretty low, so I can't speak to the results for a person with a higher bridge.

If you have an army surplus store in town I would definitely go in and try before you buy. These seem pretty common. Ski goggles might also work. I've seen people wear those.

I've only been to one burn (last year) but my advice would be to frequent thrift stores. They've got some amazing stuff! If you have dollar stores in your area I'd suggest frequenting those as well!

Cheers! See ya on the Playa!

I got goggles made for motocross drivers. They fit over my glasses, don't fog and are actually made for repelling dust :P

Thrift stores and garage sales are your friends. We picked up an ice chest that (supposedly) keeps ice for five days for two bucks. At walmart it is 50.00

tarps can trap in heat and be a wind sail. They can also tear and get ruined in high winds. Home depot has good shade material that will allow wind to blow through it and block out 90% sunlight. Welcome.

Get a tarp that blocks all light.
They have a black or metal layer.
Or thick enough.

I advise you to Get a tarp that blocks all light.

Tarps that block all light have a black or metal layer or are thick enough that they block all light.

I have had good luck using shade cloth but on really hot days we put a section of tarp over the shade cloth for added shade. It really helps. I consider 70% shade to be a bare minimum for use on playa. Were I to make a purchase of new shade for use on the playa it would be 90% knit shade cloth with grommets every 2 feet and double grommets at the corners.

Note that according to the aluminet site, 80% or 90% shade mesh doesn't block 80% of light and heat, but closer to 50%.
Maybe it's a measurement of area instead?
