queer-friendly rideshare from LongBeach?

Post by torn1990 » Thu Apr 21, 2011 1:52 pm

Long Beach or LA.
My name is Aaron, this will be my 1st burning man experience and I admittedly have no one to go with! Unfortunately I do not think I can rely on my car to get me to burning man this year so I’m hoping to make some quick local friends I can enjoy the ride up with : )
Some info about me...
I'm 20 yrs old going on 21 soon. I am presently living in longbeach with my boyfriend who sadly can't make it to burning man this year with me.
I'm a feminist. I'm a friendly, gender bending, open minded and slightly introverted individual who really wants to goto burning man this year and that's all I feel I can muster currently.
Please contact me if interesed! I'd be happy to answer more questions and as well as some some.

I don't think you'll have much an issue finding a ride. More so if you get the Jack Rabbit Speaks email newsletter, have read thefirst timers guide, joined your local burner groups email newsletter, and post something up on the rideshare board when it's updated for this year.

Welcome! btw

Hi Torn! :)

The online rideshare opportunities will open up soon, but yeah, meeting local Burners is even better. As a self-admitted introvert, you might be glad to have some acquaintances there at the outset. (You'll be okay even if you don't, but).

Welcome torn. I'm sure you'll get a ride, but if only you would not be so heterophobic, you'll double your chances of getting a ride. I think you'll find Black Rock City to be a friendly city.

Tom, if you enable your email on your profile, you don't need to post it.
A mod can remove it from your earlier post if you like.

Welcome to eplaya.

Yeah, I was like: really? it's Burning Man, sad if you have to specificy "queer-friendly."

Okay, he's a young kid out of Orange County, a well-known backwater of conformity. He may never have experienced much "queer-friendly"ness. Which doesn't mean that you are wrong, just that Aaron simply might not know what it's like to be in a city where sexual orientation doesn't count for much one way or the other with the vast majority of people.
Need I remind everyone that even in San Francisco, there's queer-bashing? Consider lightening up on the kid.
Thank you.

I happen to think Shambala and C.f.M. are absolutely right. To begin your begging with must be queer-friendly is about the antithesis of what a community like Burning Man should be all about. If a straight male had said the opposite, they would be cruxcified for being homophobic. Why Fishy do you, in your liberal politically-correct world, not condemn but rather condone this kind of behavior? Makes no sense to me.

Torn thinks he needs to specify queer-friendly, because he's never been and doesn't know. I was so nervous about the Burn on the way to the drop-off point that my eyes were full of tears--and I didn't even have a minority orientation that I was worried about. But that's how nervous a newbie can be. I've seen other people who have no idea how liberal things are there make similar inquiries about how they will be received. He's not slagging straights. He just doesn't know the culture yet.

Might I point out he said "queer-friendly". He did not say "queer only" or " gay only" or "straights please don't reply".

I don't think the OP was begging, it was an introduction, a bit about themselves and asking for a ride. I just thought it a philosophically sad commentary on "us" if someone feels the need to specify "queer-friendly."

I hope we don't scare him off with this conversation. I guess the point everyone is trying to make is that you don't have to worry about what anyone thinks or is judging you.
Step in ask for ride. Anyone heading in that direction that week should be open minded and accepting of you.

With that said, WELCOME again to eplaya. Kick off your shoes and make yourself at home here. :D

Why Pyro in your assigning people to catagories and expecting them to
O fcuk it.

People are still being killed for being queer, in this country, in places like Orange county--and even the Bay Area--and he's a kid who hasn't been before. Personally, I find it a mark of taking care of his personal safety. I don't think anyone is going to actually pretend to be queer-friendly and going to the burn and kill him, but, oh boy, if we took out the festival, I'd agree that there's a chance of it happening. Whereas, there are far fewer cases of hets being killed by queer people because of the heterosexual orientation.
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that this is controversial on this board, given the ease with which some members toss around "gay" as an epithet, but you're looking a little clueless, Doc. It may surprise you, but there are parts of Idaho where I'd hesitate to mention my classically german jewish last name.
Besides, once he's been, he'll probably find that in context the worry was silly.

If "us" means Americans, you're right. If "us" means burners, well, isn't it a little nice that we're still flying under the radar?

Hear, here! I never heard of a straight person being beaten or killed by a gay for his sexual orientation.

Boijoy, we're lousy with hippies. If it weren't for hippies, I probably would never have gone. Am I one? No. But I make fun of them but absolutely tolerate them, as they do me. The only real difference between me and most of my campmates and your typical hippie is that we bathe occasionally.

And Fishy, you say that gays are, and I quote, "...still being killed in places like Orange County..." Oh really? When was the last time a gay was killed for his sexual orientation in, oh, say Mission Viejo or Anaheim? You cannot cite a single example in this millenium I'm willing to wager. That's what people do, they jump to the most hysterical conclusions imaginable without seeing what nonsense they are saying. It's like saying all conservatives are Nazis and endorse killing gays or all liberals insist on abortions on demand and are communists. It's simply not true and you know it.

Sometimes people, think what you're saying and just try and be reasonable. Those of us in the center think both the left and the right should have their collective heads examined.

Aaron has alluded to why he might make some people uncomfortable, in his post.
It's really just something to ask any ride about anyway, but I can understand.

Anyway, I'm going to go out for dinner with the family, so I don't have time for further research.
