first time for a UK based volunteer...
hello eplaya inhabitants! this will be my first time to burning man, i am looking forward to it very much, can't even begin to imagine what it will be like in "real-life"!
i am going to be a volunteer firefighter at the playa this coming summer... but i am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction. i am trying to figure out the best thing to do; i'll be flying from the UK well in advance and want to spend some time in NYC before... so... should i try and hook up with people coming from there or should i fly to san francisco and try and get to the playa after having some time in new york...?
any advice appreciated ... and ... roll on the summer madness!
:o)

huh? do you need help getting to the playa or being a firefighter?
getting to the playa there will be a ride share on her eventually or as i understand it there is a pick up point in reno you try your luck at.
Also dont know where in the uk you are from but there is a london burner pub that meets every third thursday of the month a regional emaill (look under regionals in the main forum to sign up)
or i am sure if stay on her someone will mention another way or you can make contacts.
if you wan tto be firefighter its go to teh main BM site and goto volounteers
either way welcome to eplaya and see you on the playa (one uk birgin to another its great here stay and chat)

cheers bro! i'm a firefighter up in south yorkshire... just trying to get a feel of what's best to do. been looking at flights to new york then travel onwards BUT if it's just too far i'll look at getting an internal flight closer to the playa. have you sorted your flight yet? are there many londoners meeting in that pub you mention?
anyway, thanks for the prompt reply... see you there! :o)
p.s. i've already been through the selection process and confirmed! oh yea!

Hey Waterpistol..welcome!
You might not have enough time while visiting NYC to make the connections for travel arrangements...but you could start making those connections now. Take a look at the Regionals section on the homepage here for contact info.
Take graidawg's advise and connect with your local UK Burners...they're all over the UK! Lastly, if you fly into Reno there's always a very good chance to find a ride. There will be a Burning Man Rideshare Help Desk at the airport that can steer you in the right direction. If you fly into San Francisco BRC travel opportunities are available, but not as concentrated as those out of Reno since Reno seems to be the major destination arrival point for long distance Burners. Plus Reno is the nexus of major routes of travel for those driving in from the South and East and from San Francisco.
The Black Rock City firefighters is an awesome group to work with. Volunteering with them does not mean you'll get a free pass to the event, so plan accordingly. Hopefully you have made contact with the firefighters thru the Volunteer Questionnaire and are already signed up. If not, do so asap.
Good luck!

"sure we could call it cut, die and blow." - wow! this festival sounds wild!
@dragonpilot ... thanks; i have already gone through the application process and am aware of the ticket situation. i'll probably still try to fly to NYC for the first part and then fly to reno... it's expensive to book at the minute though so gonna hang fire and hope they come down in price!
@graidawg; cheers for your continued input... 2880 miles is a LONG drive in anyone's book surely!? as for the london meet, highly unlikely that i'll be in the big city anytime soon, but not impossible. do you have the link to the newsletter you mentioned? i'd like to access it...
peace out bredbins!
