My first burn! And I'm going alone? S.O.S
Hello fellow burners!
My names Katie :] I'm planning on going to the burn this year for my first time. I am BEYOND excited! But I must say that I'm also quite nervous.. I'm not going with anyone and I don't know where to camp.
What should I do? I'm a very open minded person who believes that the world has a way of working things out, but I know that I need somewhat of a plan when going into the desert to camp for 7 days.
I spin fire, I cook, I sleep, I converse, I photograph, I laugh, I giggle, I dance, I'm not hard to get along with!
Suggestions? Anyone in the same boat?
I appreciate your help :]

Hi Katie! You do not have to post pics.
People will mistake you for a sparkle pony. (Ugly Dougly has never recovered entirely from his decision to do this.)
You can look at some of the 2011 Theme Camps at this link, which is simply several forums down from the one you're in now:
http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewforum.php?f=188
Try also Googling camps in your area. Most theme camps do not go looking for members. Be ready to offer work, or dues, or some of both, & tell them why you'd be a good fit for their theme specifically.
If you know how to put up a tent and stake a shade structure with rebar, camping with others is not a must, and you'll have many neighbors. You can drive in, collect a map at Greeter's, and camp wherever you want that isn't a theme camp area (most recently these were marked by foot-high double flags made of wire). Talk to potential neighbors before you start pounding stakes.
Consider also meeting your local burners:

Hi strudelicious Welcome to the ePlaya,
You might want to check with the regional group in your area http://regionals.burningman.com/na_index.html Lots of good suggestions and guidance. Heck, they might even have a regional camp that wants you.
That first burn is a tad intimidating, even for those who do read every thing they can get their hands on...
See ya on the Playa

Katie! Welcome home! Another thing to consider, besides your many talents, abilities and open mindedness is:
1. You must be 21 or older to camp with any theme camps that serve alcohol.
2. You must be 18 or older to camp with any theme camps of a sexual nature.
3. Openminded is an extremely relative term.

Hi Katie!
I am in the same boat. My first burn, and going solo. Have some friends I am supposed to meet there, but no idea yet if that's a sure thing. Anyway, I'm incredibly excited to be going! And glad I still have some time to get everything together, too. But I really want to get out there.
Hope to see you on the playa!

I'm not sure where you're getting those "rules." Most theme camps will not serve you alcohol or make sweet love to you if you are not over the stated ages, but there is no prohibition against camping with a group and not being over 21 or 18.Trishntek wrote:Katie! Is this, indeed, a written rule or is it more default-world risk-aversion riding the coat-tails of the crap about carrying liability insurance on theme camps, art cars, costumes, gifts, etc.?

That's not entirely accurate. At BDC&WB you must be over 21 unless you are accompanied by a legal adult/guardian. We have had the LEOs haunt our camp on the lookout for contributing to the delequency of minors by serving alcohol. So if you're under 21, please go elsewhere. I think Kidsville is still open.

That's your canp's rules, I was asking if it is a state law or BM rule that says those under 21 can't camp with a theme camp as stated by TrishDr. Pyro wrote:That's not entirely accurate. And to be busted for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, wouldn't the LEOs have to have some proof of under-aged drinking or exposure to perverted sexual acts (which we can assume is rampant at BDC &WB!)

A minor is not allowed to "loiter" in an establishment serving alcohol. That is my understanding of Nevada law.
In regards to sexual activity, I ASSUME it would be contributing to delinquency or possibly certain aspects of child porn laws.
edit #1: An establishment involving both is inviting trouble to allow a minor to dwell within IMO.
edit #2: Certainly not my ideology,,,, just CYA

By law, no one under 21 is allowed within our bar structure, but the rest of the camp is safe and welcome for kids. We had kids ride our pony (which was 10 feet from the "door" to the bar) and our Bull, no problem, one little boy stopped every morning to ride the pony and admire the "corn". There is no written rule prohibiting children from camping in a theme camp that maintains a bar, that is up to the individual camp. I'll be taking my son one of these days and our group is mature and respectable enough that I feel comfortable with it. YMMV.Trishntek wrote:A minor is not allowed to "loiter" in an establishment serving alcohol. That is my understanding of Nevada law.

It was the smilies, exclamation points, and references to laughing and giggling that made people wonder. (I don't know what excuse <i>I</i> have for smiley-ing and !!!).
People are just being protective of their camps (all over your thread, haha!) because minors pose unique issues and liabilities.
You might not get recommendations of camps in your thread. (Who knows.) It's not personal. You're meant to do some hunting yourself on the site and on google, and to contact your regional people. It proves your interest in a specific camp as well as a commitment to radical self-reliance (one of the 10 Principles).

Talk to Doc Pyro about Barbie Death Camp.
Me and my friends camped there last year. They have a pretty good amount of solo campers. Are pretty friendly to first timers.

I'm going alone too but meeting people there this year, and Doc Pyro HAS been very helpful to me thus far.
I've done so much research it's almost like I have too many options now, whereas last week I had exactly one: camp by myself and meet some cool people (which is still a very real possibility for me, since I do have a ton of gear)! Do as everyone else says: do a grip of research, send out some emails/messages here and talk to some different camps, and get in touch with your regional burners. Everyone here has been so helpful and friendly, with tons of advice. I've figured out that the main thing is to just make it happen and get there! Everything will will work out great! Hasta en la playa!

Welcome home strudelicious! Stop in at Da Bar thread in open discussions. have a virtual drink or two. (No age limit here
) enter in the ongoing ever changing conversations and make freinds. Many of the folks that go there belong to theme camps. And even if you do not find a camp to join you will have freinds before you get to black rock City.
